I've said that for a while now, he just seems best suited to being more central, it keeps him more involved aswell as he can drift through some games.

However, with the emergence of Watson in the no.10 may have to keep Lawrence on the left.

I think our three behind the striker could be fluid and rotate in game. Watson was playing on the left for parts vs Betis, Lawrence can play left or middle, Sibley can play middle or right and Jozwiak can play either wing.

Think Davies and Jagielka may be too slow for a CB partnership.

I think even though Wisdom has more pace, I think his lapses in concentration and poor positioning would be more costly than Jags and Davies' lack of pace.

With Jags and Davies at the back we may have to play a deeper line and play more counter attacking football which I wouldn't mind because I've said for a while our players are best suited to playing counter attack anyway.

At the same time do we really need Carroll to cover the holding mids considering Bielik should be back in a few months and we have Bird/Shinnie/Williams to play there. We also have Hutchinson as well

But none of our other midfielders are like Carroll, someone who's good in possession and can control tempo, it was a massive problem for us last season. Unless Bird can step up this season and become that.

So you're basing it on it being them 4 + Davies up until Jan? I was thinking more of this initial set of signings but then more can sign after so Davies, Jagielka & Forsyth would do a job for a couple of games

It all depends on when we'll be allowed to sign more players. But even if we can after the first few games, are there any other CBs even available out there? are there any other strikers out there other than Baldock?

Not having a dig or ote, but why Wisdom? He has been recovering from an injury so not fully fit and now he is ill so missed last night and set to miss the Notts Co game, so why him to sit on the bench ahead of someone like Aluko/Morrison who have started all pre-season games and are more likely to start?

Because we have no CB's and can't risk relying on Jagielka and Davies staying uninjured until January at least. As much as I'd like to gamble on someone like Morrison it's not worth it. Aluko would be useful but with Lawrence, Sibley, Watson and Jozwiak in that position, and with the CB crisis, there's other priorities.

If Mengi is available I'd have him instead of Wisdom.

  6. I know it's stupid to judge things based on one pre-season game but parts of this rant have been left over from last season.

I've just realised there was a time last season when we had three people at the club vastly more qualified and suitable for the manager role than Rooney. Mac, Wassall and even Bowyer. This club is ridiculous. It's obvious Rooney is un-sackable until we have a new owner.

A decent or at least experienced manager, someone with a history of using low quality players at the bottom end of the division would at least give us more of a chance. To me it looks like Rooney is more interested in getting better as a manager for his individual benefit. Him trying to be the one who finally gets the best out of Morrison is a prime example of this. He's not in it for the money so why would he be bothered doing the boring stuff that would benefit the club? He clearly isn't willing to listen to advice from more experienced people after the way he banished Mac, instead he just surrounds himself with yes men. He's un-sackable and I think he knows it.

If we're accepting we're going to be in a relegation battle next season and we have low quality players we should do what other clubs in this situation do, be less of a footballing side, play more direct, simple etc. Like Burnley have been doing for years in the PL. Instead it just feels like we're part of Rooney's Football Manager career.

I'd have a lot of respect for him if he would step aside without asking for a pay-off (he doesn't need the money), and just let someone with relegation experience come in to give us some sort of chance.

    We need a new one.

We needed a new one last season but we extended Forsyth's contract.

He's fine if given space to cross but defensively he's too slow.

We need a lot of things?, but if there isn't a left back available on loan or as a free agent then what can we do? and considering we don't have any centre backs and one striker, aren't we stuck with the left backs we have?

If you’re doubting his attitude over the course of a season then maybe but talent wise, he’s head and shoulders above this lot.

He’s Picasso the others are painting by numbers. So predictable, slow and safe. Limited footballers, no ambition.

If we can sign four, then for me it’s Wisdom (or Mengi if that reopens), Jagielka, Morrison and Carroll.

Stearman looks like a Div 2 centre half, ponderous in possession and slow on the turn.

Baldock is no forward. Aluko past it.

No room for Jagielk and Davies and whilst I love him, Curtis’s injuries rule him out for me. Would love him to stay in some capacity, though.

Let Hutchinson and Forsyth out on loan, sell Lawrence and Buchanan and bring in at least one forward who can run and get in the box.

    So who's the left back??

The Morrison situation just reminds me of Ozil's later years at Arsenal, huge talent but just a massive luxury player who will go missing.

We again, just like with Rooney, aren't the club that is a good fit for ex players just starting their managerial careers!

Great for Lampard and his future he can cover the cracks and not at all develop the team or lookout for our future as a club!

I can't believe, with all the other people at the club, your having a go at Lampard, and for what? Almost getting us promoted? Would getting promoted be good for the future of the club? It's not a Managers job primarily to look after the future of a club, it's to win games with the players he has. Besides, he developed Bogle quite well who we sold. It's not his fault none of the other academy players were good enough at the time to compete.

While he couldn't finish to save his own kind, at least he got into exciting positions! We've really gone backwards in the past few years.

I really believe Lampard just compounded the problem, take away his covering the cracks loans, we were a very poor side!

Why is it Lampard's fault he covered the cracks? They were there before and after Lampard, isn't it a good thing he was able to cover them?

If you ask Aberdeen fans I'm sure they'll tell you that his tackling is far from his best quality. He's definitely more of a runner. Has a decent engine and can recover well. He gets a lot of cards due to being a bit gung ho with slide tackles. The best defensive players don't slide into challenges, they position themselves correctly and block the ball/runner and stay on their feet.

I think his standing tackles and interceptions are good, I can't remember him going in for many slide tackles last season. I think he's best when he just sits in front of the back 4 mopping up and closing down space. Too often last season he was asked to do too much attacking wise as we didn't have anyone else who could link the midfield to the attack, he wasn't very good at it and it expended his energy that should have been used defensively.

If we could bring in someone like Morrison or Carroll to link up the midfield and attack and leave Shinnie to sit in front of the defense then we could have a midfield that works quite well, but we have more important problems with squad to address first unfortunately.

It's simplistic, yes. But I understand the process and agree our current fit 1st team options don't fit that plan. We also play 2 deep and one further forward in a midfield 3 now that sees us not being able to move the ball forward effectively because the space between midfield and attack is too much.

Shinnie could be the closest we currently have to a destroyer, but his tackling is more reckless than well timed.

Alas, we are beggars and not choosers currently. If we were to look at our young prospects who can play DM, I'd say Jordan Brown or Festy Ebosele are possible "destroyers" on the fringes of the first team squad. However, Ebosele is being used in wider positions currently.

Really? Isn't his tackling his best quality? If he's not good at that what is he good at? ?

You beat me to it. We definitely need another striker, not a wide player that can play there if necessary, a decent striker who knows where the net is....

If Baldock is the only striker on trial and our only option then we should be signing him up. We need to sort out the CB and striker problems before we even think about players like Morrison and T.Carroll.

    Agree.

A side with Bielik, a fully functioning Morrison/Sibley, Carroll/ Knight, Jozwiak/Aluko, Lawrence and CKR isn't a bad attacking force at all. Defense still a worry but Jags and Wisdom would be a pretty potent pairing too. Its not looking all that bad this season if we can actually sign these lads.

and if CKR gets injured?... we need another striker.

Central midfield is one of the few positions we aren't lacking numbers in. This makes very little sense unless we are offloading some of the youngsters. CB and ST essential.

We do have a lot of midfielders, but there either defensive mids or attacking mids. We don't have anyone who links defence and attack which was a big problem for us last season. Having said that, if we can only sign 4 players then other positions would still be a priority unfortunately.

  16. 22 minutes ago, Chris_Martin said:

just thinking if we signed the four now would we then be able to add anyone else in January. That way we've only got to get Jagielka/Davies/CKR to manage for 6 months on their own instead of whole season.

We're still under embargo because the EFL want us to submit more financial statements from previous years. So if we submit them by January and everything is ok we shouldn't be under embargo anymore, I think.
