Don't get the thread closed, gents!
I think its best just to keep it to the specific Ukraine war. Even though there's definite room for debate on western hypocrites and politics I don't think there's room for it on this forum. 
I don't know where on the Internet is a safe place to discuss the war. Twitter is so full of morons trying to collect "likes" and trolls trying to be cool. That this forum is at least the chance to discuss this huge world changing event.

I can't find it now,but I was reading an article that seemed reputable which said that the Russian gas pipeline to Europe goes through Ukraine and Russia has to pay Ukraine a huge some (multi millions) per year for the privilege. It might go some way to explain what's in it for Russia to annex Ukraine
Very little else makes sense

A new pipeline was being built that would have bypassed Ukraine. That's been put on hold (at best) by the war.

I think you are wrong, military action is not an option, but sanctions can work provided they are intensified, far more than anything we have ever known, more than South africa in the 1970s and 1980s. 

I hope he has a gentle side. Looks like he has the potential to annexe her.

It’s so weird / depressing. The average Russian doesn’t care whether Russia gets an extra few miles of territory. The average Ukrainian doesn’t care (other than the fact that they’re the ones being invaded). We don’t really care about it over here in Britain, or America or Australia or anywhere else.
I don’t really get what the issue is in eastern Ukraine, and I’m sure it’s probably just a pretext for some other insecurity that vlad has, and I’m sure there are some people who care greatly about it. But no more so than people in Northern Ireland, or Catalonia, or a bunch of other disputed areas of the world where people grumble about wanting to be recognised as an independent state.
So why does anyone suddenly care about eastern Ukraine? I honestly couldn’t care less about it, so why is it suddenly ruining my day?
most average plebs (ie not the top 2%) just care about having food in their bellies and a roof over their heads. What Ukraine and Russia get up to in the privacy of their own part of Europe is there business. But it’s always all those ordinary plebs, you me and everyone else, that ends uk paying some sort of price.
christ, putin’s talking about consequences the likes of which the world has never seen if the west intervenes. Are we seriously talking about a world where our children have to live under the threat of a mushroom cloud?
the world sucks right now. 
And this why threads like this are important, because it allows me to ask questions like this, in the hope that someone more sensible than I might answer them with something reassuring.

I lived in Newcastle during the Keegan years (Owner was Sir John Hall back then). There was a five year waiting list for season tickets (before they extended the capacity). I love Geordies, but their expectations of their football club have never been realistic. They want the moon on a stick and they want it now. They will be protesting outside St James' in the summer if they haven't spent £300m.

Watched the first one last night and I have to say I haven't laughed so much in ages. The missus has worked in hospitals/NHS so she warned me that it was written by a doctor and I might not find it that funny. She was wrong.
