    Sounds like Nyambe is out for this one and an as yet unspecified further amount of time. With that bit of info I’d like to see a back 4 with Wilson at right back;

                    Wildsmith

    Wilson  Nelson  Cashin  Sibley

    NML   Adams   Bird  Barkz

            Waghorn    Gayle

That’s what I’d like to see, just go for it in an old fashioned 4-4-2 with Waghorn able to drop in as the “10” and Gayle playing on the shoulder. Wilson and Sibley offer balance and an attacking outlet at fullback, NML and Barkhuizen carry assist and goal threats.

I don’t think that’s what Warne will pick though, could see another 3 at the back or perhaps a 4-3-3

I know we're at home and should be on the front foot from the off but I'd want at least one of my full backs to be able to defend.Nyambe and Fozzy are big misses for us.

  2. Always good to get an experienced striker in,albeit one whose pace has lessened.Does he go straight in after 4 days of training ?( he meets the squad tomorrow) or do we use him as an impact player ? Looking forward to the debate regarding what formation most fans expect us to use to accommodate him.Pleased he's joined and hope he's got 5/6 goals in his locker, could be the difference between automatic promotion or the play offs 🙏

Yes, we had all of January to sign a striker and no doubt we tried for the entire month to secure a deal.

But it is not straightforward. Clearly we want players who will add something to the squad and we want someone who will improve us in some way. It’s not a case of taking absolutely anyone.

Better players are usually more difficult to sign, and clubs and even players will use whatever tactic they can to get the best deal and move possible. Moves you think are close often break down because of this.

If Collins is out for any length of time, it’s just really unfortunate.

You'll also have heard Warne say a striker was lined up with 4 hrs of the window left and all parties were ok with the move until his manager suddenly changed his mind.

I understand plan C is in operation

Niall Ennis on loan to the end of the season

Ward looking very likely to be leaving on loan

Smith and Gregory - not coming - Wednesday apparently wanted 100% wages + 1m loan fee for smith - 50% + 150k for Gregory

Loan with guarantee we buy for £500k ?  Hope Blackburn aren’t as stubborn as the Wendies https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/bolton-wanderers-barrier-blackburn-rovers-niall-ennis-pursuit/

Willing to see what he can do, but 1) sounds like more of another puts a shift in midfielder as opposed to a technical player.

2)Our midfield issues aren’t going to be resolved by running around more…

That said, if he comes in we change the system allowing the likes of Bird and Hourihane to do the better bits of football I can’t see why he won’t improve us.

11 games played in 2 seasons is obviously pretty concerning, even if his injury was a freak one. His last full season was 2 years ago at league 2, which again is concerning.

Not trying to pile on and be overly negative,

but from a realistic standpoint 3)this doesn’t strike me as a player we’ve scouted for a while and he’s a massive gamble both ability and fitness wise.

Hopefully he adds a bit of something in the middle, and at minimum he’s another body in for the run in to cover injuries.

Even if we only spen 25% of that money it would really help a rebuild. Moxon and branagan for around 1.5mill combined would be a fee range I think is not silly or undervalued. Coupled with a young asset of our own like Robinson or tomo getting more minutes and a chance to impress.

Why do you think Oxford, one of our promotion rivals, would sell us Cameron Brannagan, one of the top midfield players in this division for anything less than the £2m he's been conservatively valued at ? Id love him at Derby but it's never going to happen, sadly.

Sad state of affairs but we have very few assets.

Cashin and Bird are the only players that could command a 7 figure fee. The rest are either too old, too poor or expiring in the summer.

Sounds like we might a forward in before deadline day but looking at last night’s performance will that be enough?

Blimey,is Warne training them that hard?!

I did understand your Latin it looked good to me, my reply to your “we live in hope” was, or should have been, “ We do” (facimus) 😂

It's amazing what we remember from 60 years ago but what we forget from 60 days ago!!😅

I don't see that signing my old Latin teacher "Smithy" will do us much good he must be 120 years old now 🤣

To be fair he did frighten the life out of me when I was 10 years old however, he was good at conjugating Latin verbs perhaps PW has a new tactic to confuse the opposition.

    In spe vivimus!

I don't get all this chat about Cashin's pace. He does okay over short distances - which is where it counts - but his positioning, anticipation, and tackling ability are what make him a good defender. Some of the best CBs - Maldini, Vidic, Terry - weren't especially quick. On a slight tangent, when the likes of Harry Maguire get criticised for being slow, it's more that he often doesn't anticipate where the ball will be, is facing the wrong way, and gets dragged into poor positions. Cashin doesn't do that.

I'd love him to stay but totally understand if he left. He has the potential to be a PL player and that's unlikely to happen at Derby...

Wash your mouth out!!😅Maldini is arguably one of the best defenders in the game's history  and, one of the quickest.

" Paolo Maldini, the legendary Italian footballer who spent the majority of his career with AC Milan, is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the sport. His versatility allowed him to excel in both the left-back and center-back positions over the course of his long and illustrious career.

Left Back (Earlier Career): In the early stages of his career, Maldini primarily played as a left-back. He was known for his exceptional speed, agility, and ability to contribute to both defense and attack from the left flank. Maldini's technical skills and defensive prowess made him one of the best left-backs in the world during this period.

Center Back (Later Career): As he aged, Maldini transitioned to playing as a center-back. Despite the change in position, he continued to excel. His experience, football intelligence, and reading of the game allowed him to adapt seamlessly to the demands of central defense. Maldini's leadership and composure at the back were instrumental in Milan's successes during this period.

I didn't say that I thought that he was as good as Todd, or even that he ever will be, only that his style reminds me so much of Colin Todd. Todd wasn't very tall either but still won more than his fair share of headers. Todd was faster than Cashin that's for sure, and also read the game faster than most mortals. There are many central defenders that would be in my all time Derby team ahead of Cashin having started watching them in the mid to late sixties, but that doesn't mean I can't compare two player's styles . You only picked me up on the Todd reference. Do you agree with the rest of my post?

Yes ,I do and you're one of the posters I usually agree with most ! Totally agree with your comment re the tiredness of the central defenders after the recent punishing schedule.Looking forward to the rest of this season and trying to temper my enthusiasm as you know what it's like being a Derby fan.As someone once said,"it's the hope that kills you!"

I agree 100% with the bits in bold. I don't agree with any of the rest though. What I saw was two very tired defenders going for the same ball in the 90th minute. They had both played every single minute of the four games in 11 days.

I haven't seen any actual stats, but hopefully someone can confirm that he loses far fewer defensive aerial battles than he wins. Lack of height is not a problem because of the leap that he has got. As for pace, I've not seen anyone leave him in their wake. He's been likened many times, but he really does remind of Colin Todd.

I do respect everyone's right to an opinion but I do feel that comparison is a tad OTT! If I was picking my all time Derby side ,having followed them since 1964, then my three central defenders would be Todd,Stimac and McFarland.I like Cashin's determination but Todd was light years ahead of him. However, each to their own.

  13. I love his passion and whole hearted commitment but when you watch Peterborough's winner again you'll see he got in Nelson's way and back headed it to their centre forward. His lack of height and genuine pace will stop him making the top grade I feel but there's a decent Championship defender in there.Happy to build our defence around him at this level.
