The model for Championship football is "you'll get tons of money if you make it to the premier league" which is obviously not a healthy one. The only alternative model is "accept you are a lower league club, and have lower league players or sell to fund" - there's not a model for competetive and sustainable. Even the much lauded Bretford were on a sell to fund model, they made it work, but you can't run a whole system on the basis of everyone selling to everyone else, Brentofrd only made it work by selling to clubs chancing on the premier league dream, if every other club was trying to pull the same as Brentford, the market wouldnt be what it was for Brentofrd.
The economics of football are hopeless, the championship is a good example of how broken they are, and DCFC are an example of what happens if you fail. Take all the moral hand wringing out of it (for i do believe a lot of it is partizan and somewhat flexible), Derby's main crime was to fail. If we'd succeeded apart from a few grumbles, we'd have been welcomed to the Prem and talk would only be of the team that did it.

Nail on the head Jono, it's hard to compete at this level.
What we need to do is find a sustainable way of competing, and if that means us dropping down the league's I'll take it.
Do we need a Cat 1 academy, it's not helped us cling onto young talent so far, has it, so is it worth the investment?
Do we need to pay weekly wages in excess of 5 figures?
The free agents we've signed on half that look good business, so far.
I'm not bothered who we play, in whatever league, all I follow is Derby.
If clubs like Luton and Barnsley can live within their means at this level, our larger fanbase should at least offer us the same opportunity.
Maybe given time we'll have a Springer of a season, and compete towards the top end of the Championship, maybe we'll be forever a Lg1 or 2 team, who knows, but at the very least we'd be able to know they'll be a team to support going forwards, which is not the case at the moment.

I just struggle with the whole championship finance model … Mel walks away as he well could, There’s the club, debt free. I’d guess Mel might keep the deeds for PP and be happy to lease, rent or sell it to the new guys. Regardless of this, the new owners get DCFC and they get it for a tenner … but who wants that when it loses exty thump million a year ?

You can't possibly know that though.
He may be willing to write it off, or leave the debt on the books with a very favourable repayment schedule.
Most of the debt was on the holding company anyway, nothing to stop him selling Derby County FC from that company relatively debt free and cutting his losses.
Man Utd for instance are several hundred million pounds in debt, yet manage to function as a going concern, as are several other PL clubs.
I still cling on to the belief he'd walk away for nothing and cut his losses if he can find a suitable buyer, although recent events have tested that faith admittedly.
What can't be allowed to carry on is this ghost ship of a club, running every department on a minimal budget, every day seeming another step closer to the edge of existence.
Morale of the few staff left behind the scenes must be on the floor.

Wilk be watching this on sky, as its a friday night kick off, looking forward to another Derby performance with guts, effort andvskill, feel if we can keep Deeney quite, which we can, we might nick this one by the odd goal, gping 2-1, to the Rams, Lawrence and Curtis from a corner to send the 1000 travelling fans mad.

Looking forward to seeing the boys on the pitch again. Hope we get a win to lift everyone's spirits.

Some of the news and rumour about the club over the international break hasn't been pleasing. Let's try to get back to the football.
In a bizarre turn of events, it's when I'm watching Derby County play this season that I'm actually at my least disappointed with the club.
    1-0 Shinnie FGS

He's a generous bloke, £1.2m for a robotic surgeon to Derby Hospital that helps the city, saved lives and pumped millions into the football club.
People can dissect his running of the club and they will, but honestly having talked to him on many occasions, he's a decent guy that does care.
I would receive calls just to check up how I was doing during my bad days with anxiety. Was hard to read that he was going through his own health issues.
I'll get hammered for this post but I'm gutted for the guy with how this is ending. Always will.
Won't ever feel comfortable reading people laying into him as a man, but accept that others haven't been as lucky I have to have been able to see that side of him.

I think if MM told the truth about the situation we find ourselves in, it would send fans into a blind panic that we are doomed to relegation and maybe even administration.
I suspect Mel and others will be doing everything within their powers to mitigate the impact of any sanctions applied and taking extensive legal advice (which takes time).
Probably best we talk about Birmingham next Friday.

I didn’t see your rant so can’t comment but comparing Mel to the Crooks that Maxwell and the 3 amigos were, is probably the most stupid, rude, insulting, ill informed comment I think I have ever seen on this forum.

Really ? Think about what you said there, it’s shameful.

The Nadir for the club was 2003 when it went into receivership because the Co-Op bank pulled the plug, and was purchased by the Amigos for £3, we were close to extinction then that is not happening now
