Went back through the key moment in the thread for the first time, and can't believe there wasn't more discussion around this first substitution. Warne made two terrible substitutions in the game. We needed a goal, but even before getting in at half-time and regrouping, he took off one of his likely scorers/creators in Sibley. Absolute madness. If he needed Smith on it had to be Bird off. I can't fathom his thought processes.

Then, late in the game, Harvey White was brought on when he had no right to be on the pitch and was absolute garbage. What has he done to earn that opportunity? This "set piece expert's" sole contribution was to squander two freekicks in good positions. Play the people who work for the club and have a stake in the match.

Then, I cannot believe the people on here claiming it was a penalty. Seriously? On first viewing it was an obvious dive. You all need to take a long hard look at yourselves. Why would anyone be so eager to justify the referee making a clear and obvious error in the biggest match of his sorry life? To give a penalty the referee should always be sure, but here he was guessing, as he couldn't have seen a foul because there wasn't one. To give a penalty in a game of this magnitude, which could be worth so many millions of pounds, he had to be really, really, really sure. He cannot have been.  Sadly, we all know there will be no sanction.

Very hard to know where we go from here in terms of next season. We lost out on the playoffs because we've been seriously done over by incompetent refs all season (no it doesn't even out), because of our profligacy and carelessness in front of goal, and stupid losses of concentration at the back. Whoever we manage to cobble together to form a team next campaign, with all the restrictions, they have to have it drilled into them that every single game is important, from first to last and in between. Here we see Wednesday only making the playoffs with 96 points. If we're to go up in 2024 we need to start brilliantly and continue brilliantly.

Agree about the refs. As regards the points achieved. 76 would usually get you in the play offs. It’s a very decent season.
In the Championship, 69 points was enough today.

I never expected the refs to be so poor this season - not saying it’s why we haven’t made it this year , it didn’t affect Ipswich et al

I know it goes with the L1 territory but that decision yesterday summed it up

No foul, covering defender, covering keeper , ref in good position…the list goes on

And the way they strut around like mini  Mike Riley’s 🤢

    They are just inept

Maybe the new tv money will improve standards and give the Efl / refs more money training them up

Yes, as already posted, the ref couldn’t wait to penalise and send off Davies, but apparently this assault on Forsyth was perfectly legit. The ref saw it, but when Forsyth got up and raised his arm, the Wednesday player fell down, and Forsyth was penalised.

All and sundry from fans (incl a Wendy mate of mine) to retires refs to pundits all say no penalty so no red.

Not seen comment anywhere on this incident on 87 minutes and 19 seconds. The Wendy player has hold of Fozzy's shirt with both hands. Fozzy's shirt is halfway up his back. The ref is looking straight at it. Gave nothing but 2 seconds later penalised Fozzy because, when he got back up, the Wendy fell over. To me, this is far more of a penalty than the one they were given. Travesty. Also the guy holding Foz isn't even looking at the ball. Another defender has hold of Dobbin and is also not interested in the ball...

Yes. That ref was crooked. I said before the game when asked how we’d get on, well, that’s up to the ref, isn’t it?

  4. Again, fine margins. Never a pen and certainly not a red.
The irony is in the Prem they just took three minutes turning down a penalty decision at Newcastle v Arsenal, which could impact the title.
I just knew a referee would decide our fate. Don’t give me that ‘we let points slip’. Peterborough LOST 17 matches. They’re not better than us.

Agreed, too tight to be too critical of the decision, but it would be nice for a 50/50 to go our way once in a while.

Whereas this ‘offside’ given when Collins was through on goal also had a potentially huge impact on the result…

  6. I was already resigned to the Rams missing out after the drop in form. There is still hope of course. Onwards!
However so much seems to rest on dubious referee’s decisions.
Saturday we got the equaliser we deserved. Then Collins was through on goal, one on one with the keeper. Yes it may have been saved. Offside, according to the linesman.
    Really?
We might already be in the play offs.

I found Wildsmith's feigned injuries and timewasting a total embarrassment.  And the diving on the ball after every save.  The sort of behaviour you expect when you're 5 minutes away from causing a cup upset, not just trying to defend a lead in League One.  For 85 minutes. No wonder he got booked.

We all know the home crowd can act as the 12th player on the pitch.  Did he not realise that incensing the crowd made them more vocal and encouraging in their support of Rovers? He might think the "You're sh1t, hahahaha" chant every time he kicked the ball (not just the goalkicks) and "wankerrr, wankerrr, wankerrr" chant (in Bristolian) were funny and he could somehow rise above it, but it just didn't help our team.  "Same old Derby cheats" was painful to hear.

I was unfortunately standing on the Rovers' terrace and they were absolutely loving it.  I turned to my son after the trainer was called on for yet another Wildsmith phantom injury and we agreed this behaviour would bite us on the bum eventually.  Sure enough, 7 minutes added time mostly down to JW.  Surely no Rams fan was surprised that a penalty was given at 90+5 mins when in other circumstances the final whistle would have blown long before?

    Sort it out Wildsmith/Warne!

Totally agree. I despise this when it’s done to us, and I don’t want us doing it. The fact that the penalty decision was a complete joke is not relevant as we gave them the time to come up with their own dark arts.

I think the whole time wasting thing needs to be looked at differently. I think the team doing the time wasting should get a warning like an unofficial yellow card so all players know not to time waste then the next one to do it is sent off rather than let 4 different players get booked for doing the same thing.

Agree with that. Something else I would like to see is an official time keeper in the professional game. Not leave it to the ref. Each time the ball is out of play or the game stops. Or even better, 30 minute halves plus stop the clock for breaks in play like Basketball. That won’t happen, though.
I’m sick to death of it. The players going down for seemingly nothing in tandem is becoming a regular occurrence.

  9. One major problem is referees apparently will not issue two yellow cards for time wasting, therefore a red. Players know this, as well as taking turns to waste time.
Give Ipswich their due. They’d done their homework.
Having watched the Rams for nearly 40 years I am shocked to discover that easily the worst level of time wasting is found in League One.
The standard of refereeing is equally shocking. I said at Barnsley when their first offside goal was allowed to stand, despite that idiot referee, who is despised in Scotland, going over to the linesman who had his flag up, we’re getting nothing out the refs in this division.
The disbelief after that fiasco yesterday around the ground, and the lack of clarity about what had happened, was almost unique. The linesman didn’t even raise his flag. I’ve heard the Ipswich commentary. They didn’t have a clue either.
    Something needs to be done.

  10. Remember earlier in the season? We were giving away penalties left right and centre? Then we went on that 16 game unbeaten run, and we weren’t.
Here we are again. Two in two games. Justified or not. We have to become more street smart.

  11. First away game I’ve been to for a while. It went down hill after the c*** up in defence and the referee’s  bizarre decision to override the linesman’s offside flag. He was also not booking their players when he clearly needed to. A referee who likes to be the centre of attention. The number of terrible referees in this league is horrific.
We could have salvaged this, but too many players were off their game. Wildsmith, after being almost impeccable all season is beginning to worry me.
The stand given to the away fans is poorly designed, with minimal legroom, insufficient exits and toilets. There was quite a lot of drunkenness, so when fights break out amongst the same team’s fans, there’s a problem.

So, nowhere near as enjoyable an experience as my last visit there, almost exactly ten years ago, when we won 2-1, with that great goal where Wisdom ran down the wing and crossed to the head of Chris Martin.
