It's a Rooney tactic. One of those comes deep, full back pushes up and deep lying CMs go to full back. Meant to pull them out and mess with their press. Does leave us exposed up front though and reliant on balls over the top to Ebosele. Little bit one dimensional

I bet Steve Nicholson can't wait to retire.
He's a very good journo, unfortunately the paper he works for has joined the headlong rush for clickbait just to survive, and any good he can do is swamped by the rubbish his employer pushes out.
He'd have been fantastic at The Athletic.
That's not a slight on Ryan Conway either.

Thanks - frustrating if true but I guess it is what it is. Gibson's doing I assume.

Buxton was excellent with his long passing. He was a little slow on the ball and not the most agile or reactive person with his movement. However, with the ball at his feet, he could certainly pick a pass. I agree.

Actually disagree there, Buxton was a pretty good distributor of the ball.

Wasn't Rooney's biggest fan, even a week or so ago. But to see the crap that he's been dealt with during pre season with no funds, inability to bring in transfers and an owner who doesn't want to be there, I'm starting to warm to him and what he's about. You can see his desire to succeed and I do think he is doing all he can to bring Derby out of the mire we're in.
He's assembling what could be a fairly competitive squad and managed to pull a team together today that produced a result without having played together. Huddersfield aren't the strongest side in the division but you have to play what's in front of you.
He's got some games to win before he proves himself as manager but Im routing for him.

I’m so unbelievably proud of our lads tonight. Rooney was spot on in saying they grew from boys into men during the 90 minutes. So many positives, we not only have extremely talented youngsters, they also have real bravery and character.
Take the first 20 mins out of it when nerves got the better of them, from that point they were outstanding. Festy is frightening!! Must be quickest player in the championship, Watson got better and better and demonstrated his ability to thread a killer pass on numerous occasions, great goal by Hutchinson, Williams at 17 looks a real talent and has improved rapidly in just 10 days since Notts County, the guts of Brown and Watson to take pens and score the best pens of the lot (behind Kazim’s). Sibley showed flashes of what he can do, thought Joz did ok and Allsop after a shaky start was excellent in goal. Then we get to Ravel, we saw the genius with the equaliser but I was more impressed how he was straight to the youngsters after the shootout. Only thing missing was for young Jack to get a goal, thought he struggled on his own up top but really intelligent runs at times, he just needs a goal.

Thought Rooney spoke brilliantly after the game. Whatever his motivations he definitely cares and he’s committed. I also saw a young exciting footballing side tonight with lots of bottle that I can get behind.
We’ve seen a glimpse of what the future looks like tonight and it’s very encouraging. If Mel sorts his poo out then everything is there to become a force again at this level in the next couple of years. If he doesn’t then we might have to give them all away.

That kid for a scholar, looked very composed and didn’t show fear, I’ve not had chance to read all the comments but I kept saying to my lads he’s having some game for a 17 year old.
We seem to be good at producing full/wing backs, he looks very promising.

Plenty to pick through about that performance, but I'm really enjoying the us against them mentality that's being born out of adversity. I think Rooney has used it to his advantage.
The performance was no classic, but the young players seemed to develop an entire year within 90 minutes. Watson, in particular, started with a few miss passes but then was pulling the strings towards the end of the game. Ebosele is far from a polished footballer, but my word - he has a go. All I see is the Michail Antonio that was at Reading all those years ago. If he can follow a similar trajectory that would be great.
Hutchinson has a lot of technical ability. Similar to Bird in a lot of ways. I thought Brown showed a bit of promise, although I'd like to see him with Davies rather than Forsyth. Sibley is just unbelievably talented, but I wish we got him on the ball a bit more. The ability as soon as he touches the ball just jumps off the screen. The first touch, the way he quickly changes the direction of the ball. We need to develop him because he's got a special talent in a role that we need a special talent.
Ravel showing a lot of maturity and that's probably down to the team mentality. He has a real chance here and what a start. It's the best possible start for him and he will no doubt start again on Saturday.
The first 30 minutes were a rough watch, but after that we blossomed and a lot of the younger players deserve a lot of credit. It was on their shoulders and they showed a lot tonight. I'm really looking forward to Saturday now - I want to see what we can do this season!

Don't post a lot but plenty of positives tonight for me.
Seen a few criticisms of Stretton, whereas I was really impressed (weird how we all see the game differently). I thought his movement was superb, also Michael Owen-esque off the shoulder and actually allowed Watson to play them superb passes.
Unpopular opinion but I am not CKR's biggest fan (although I admit he serves a purpose for us the way things stand) and I think Stretton is a genuine serious option for us as he allows us to play a different, more expansive way. For example, Watson wouldn't be making them passes with CKR up front as there would be no-one making the runs. That being said, I thought Stretton looked understandably rusty in terms of his touch and reactions but that will come with games and not something I am concerned about.
Thought Watson and Sibley were standout tonight. Watson got a lot of the plaudits but thought Sibley was excellent again tonight and in my opinion is the most dangerous player in our squad and simply has to play. Watson is a delightfully cultured footballer. Both very good in their own rights.
Festy is a bit of an anomaly and it showed tonight. Frightening pace and direct dribbling ability but his technical ability and decision making is awful. Will still be a very good option to have and will scare teams to death because of the former.
Yes it is Salford and I am not getting carried away with a penalty win over a League Two side but that is the most I have enjoyed watching Derby play for a long time. We actually showed creativity and intent so hats off to the young lads for that and the character they showed.

I love watching Festy Ebosele play. He's still pretty raw at times but he glides past players, he's so quick, strong and intelligent with the ball. This will be his break through season.

Good result, however we got there.
Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. This is a good evening and this club has to take heart wherever we can, from whatever results we can, at the moment.
    Great comeback ?

Completely agree. Think we'll see more of Sibley when Bielik is back, or at least thats when there'll be more comfort in playing him. Bielik is going to be the key for us and I just hope he's going to come back strong before the end of September. It'll give the rest of the attack so much more leeway defensively, and should also give us that much needed creativity. I do think a midfield of Bielik, Morrison and Sibley with Bird and Shinnie available on rotation will be a force in this division.
The current defensive mentality does worry me a bit. Our defense isn't particularly strong and is an injury away from a crisis. However, it feels as though it's out of necessity at the mo - we can't really afford to concede more than 1 a game.
