Which keeper are we going to sign that’s better than Roos with the ball at their feet?

Marshall wasn’t great but definitely not any worse. I honestly don’t know of anyone around any better that we’d be able to get for nothing, but my comment was we’re not going to improve our current level of performance/form dramatically with him still in net.

  2. Played pretty well.

Great goal. Encouraging from Lawrence, playing well on injections for us.

Bird very good in possession, linking up the play to allow us to come out from the back.

Should’ve had a couple more: stretton unlucky, penalty was obvious, lawrence should’ve slipped in joz 1st half and morrison not finding final ball in last, good save from Sow 2nd half.

For me Roos can’t continue if we’re going to kick off. Yes he made a decent save against Grabban, played alright against boro but an absolute liability with the ball at his feet which is how we’re playing and at fault for their goal today (though why we didnt have a man on their thrower and allowed the cross is beyond me).

Enjoying watching us again though. On to the next one ?

  3. I’d play

                             Roos

    Byrne    Davies.       Jagielka.    Forsyth

                    Shinnie    Morrison

                              Sibley

    ebosele.           Stretton         Lawrence

One of my best mates is a Hull fan thinks they are going to come flying at us as its the only way the know how to play. I can’t see us keeping a clean sheet so lets go and try to score a few and back ourselves to beat them on our terms rather than trying to match the opposition for once.

Let's not forget where that came from in the first place, Sibley's immaturity. This is why you just can't rely on the guy to keep his head

Then it's just pathetic defending from there

Agree he’s been petulant but we’ve conceded from a nothing punt up from the half way line: 3 mistakes that I saw 1) Forsyth lost the header

    2) Joz completely lost his runner and allowed the cross

    3) Byrne had no clue where his man was at the backpost

It's 0.1% of the population and a good chunk would have died of other causes but died with Covid instead of dying of Covid. Alot of people who would have soon died of old age or another illness die of Covid instead so it makes the numbers look more significant.

What's your point? If they're going to die of something, at some point in the future it doesn't matter that COVID killed them?

I think the way the country has been in the past few months, the mask/no mask will make virtually no difference.

Also - variant escapes are going to happen as well regardless of the mask/no mask. However - I've seen scientists comment that there will be no variant which current vaccines won't have some impact on.

Also - immunity is building up through vaccine or catching the virus. That will ultimately help in the long run.

Appreciate everyone has a different opinion though on the matter. I'm looking forward to not wearing a mask and will as much as possible avoid places which are making it mandatory.

It's undeniable that if people stop trying to distance where possible, stop washing and sanitising their hands properly and either stop wearing or wear masks incorrectly then the measures won't work. I don't personally see that as a reason to stop using them properly so that they do work though.

It is true that variants will arise with high levels of infection that we are experiencing and going to experience. The thing that is truly scary imo is the possibility of vaccine resistant strains. A lot of what I've read including this recent article thinks it's a real possibility with how fast variants have popped up, the fact we only target a quite specific component of the virus and despite recent efforts 66% ish of adults being vaccinated with rapidly rising infection leaves quite a significant opportunity for these strains to develop. Sincerely hope my own worries and those I have read are unfounded. Which scientists/reports have you seen that have played down the threat of resistant strains? Not me having a dig, genuinely interested because I try to keep on top of all this as best I can ?

If I believed for one second that having a piece of paper or old cloth over your face had any REAL impact then perhaps I may see it differently but it’s just plain daft , now do I want kids sitting all day in masks at school ? No and for a multitude of reasons

masks have been proven to reduce transmission in the vast majority of droplet/aerosol spread viral disease and multiple studies advocate the wearing of them to reduce the transmission. The level of efficacy of mask-wearing as a preventative measure varies depending on which studies you look at but the overwhelming body of literature that I've seen supports its use. It DOES make a difference. The argument it hasn/t worked because X number of people have died/been affected doesn't stand-up, many more people would have likely been infected/likely died without them and how correctly/strictly they are being adhered to will also affect the data.

Some sources if you want to find out more:

Mask wearing in pre-symptomatic patients prevents SARS-CoV-2 transmission: An epidemiological analysis ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32592903/ )  this one shows up to 2.5x reduced chance of catching COVID in close contacts

Potential utilities of mask-wearing and instant hand hygiene for fighting SARS-CoV-2 ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32232986/ ) this one uses a variety of similar SARS strains to emulate coronavirus to show masks block between 99.98% and 95.15% of droplets.

For balance I have included a RCT (randomized control trial) suggesting they do not definitely stop infection. However, this can be argued to be a flawed view as even if masks stop them on 99/100 occasions and on the 100th time they fail to stop transmission this study may falsely class them as 'ineffective' at stopping spread. ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7181908/ )

  8. One issue I don't often see being raised about the relaxation of restrictions and the scrapping of mandatory mask-wearing is that with the infection rate rising as rapidly as it is, it provides the perfect platform for the emergence of vaccine resistant strains. Whilst everyone focusses on the 'decoupling' between infection rates and hospitalisations (not truly decoupled btw but substantially weakened thanks to the success of vaccinations) we would be back to square one completely if we encouraged the spread of a vaccine-resistant strain. If that happened I don't think the government would have the backbone to go back into full lockdown and from what I gauge the current mood to be of Joe Public I don't think it would be followed regardless. Then you've got those who are immunocompromised and haven't been able to have jabs which the scrapping of mandatory mask-wearing seems unfair on too. This is why some of the restriction measures being scaled down are dangerous, please be careful and consider continuing to wash your hands/wearing masks as much as possible.

  9. We’re now unfortunately seeing the culmination of a number of failures/changes at the club: Rooney’s more negative style of football (rightly or wrongly) leading to our most promising young players being played out of position (Knight) or completely dropped (i.e. Sibley), the poor season last year and the result of financial mismanagement for years. It all points to us probably cashing in cheaply on assets that would’ve otherwise served us well or commanded much higher fees. Hope I’m wrong but I can see us getting picked apart like Wigan were and the likes of Knight, Sibley, Buchanan, Bird etc all being sold off cheaply. From their point of view a move to someone like Brighton is a no-brainer at the minute given our situation, in any case, unless Rooney changes tact from the 2nd half of last season there would be no point in the more creative/technical players staying because we don’t look like we’re going to line up that way. If they go I’d wish them all the best and thank them for helping us survive last season.

  10. Noticed that there are some very knowledgeable posters on this thread regarding the academy/reserve teams and was wondering, given the financial position we find ourselves in, who people can see making the step up to the first team squad next year?

I have seen Ebosele, Watson, Stretton and Cresswell a few times but don’t enough to say if they’re ready to kick on yet (think i heard cresswell was off anyway). Any others we should keep an eye out for?

Luton have some good players and a good team ethic. They are capable of getting a goal against us which may prove to be enough.

I agree, I'm not saying they're a poor team we should be beating because right now it seems Anyone is capable of turning us over. I just think we need to pick up points against Luton or risk letting our form continue and ending up in a winner-stays up game between Bham or Sheff Wed which would be a big ask to come out on top of if we've not gotten a point in months. Squeaky bum time

Wow. I’m almost looking forward to this ‘inevitable’ loss to Luton just to see the absolute melt down on here.

Luton is not a must win game. The simple fact is, if we beat Birmingham and Wednesday, we stay up with no problems. They’re must win games, and they’re a few games away yet. We could loose every game in the mean time and it would make no difference (apart from in terms of intangible confidence stuff).

If we loose to Luton, the season is not over, I just want to remind everyone of that before anyone does anything silly. This thread is starting to sound like a mass cry for help.

Completely get your point about the most important games being against Bham and Wednesday but I think the Luton game is deemed so important because I just can't see our team having the metal to step up and perform if it comes to a straight shoot-out with either of them. We need to pick up points against Luton to ease some pressure and stop the nose-dive in performances otherwise I can't see us picking up any points at all in the coming games with our recent form, including the Bham and Wednesday matches.

  13. Always thought we'd stay up but now I'm not so sure, we've fallen further than I thought possible recently with performances and- hate to say it- team selection and tactics. Calling out individual players in the interviews I don't think helps either in these sort of situations when confidence is already on the floor. Hope I'm wrong but if we don't pick a point up against Luton we're down in that 3rd relegation spot.
