I think that at the start of the season I would have taken 7th place at this stage.
We’ve got a team of has beens and wannabes and they are doing fantastically well having been thrown together so hastily.

Probably been mentioned already, but we missed more penalties in 10 minutes than Matt Le Tissier in his entire career, scoring 47 out of 48.

Nothing there to suggest we can't reach the play offs, and that is our realistic goal.  So not too frustrated - performance is improving and points will get dropped (unless we're Plymouth, which we're not).

You seem to have problems with both LR and PW, so not surprising you are struggling to think of who we might bring in.  Both systems need time to coach - and suitable players.  Passing out from the back is fine if you do it well and learn to compensate for the odd inevitable mistake - the top three in this League all do it.  Did LR have time to develop it well enough?
Warneball is different and requires high energy and physicality to win most second balls.  It too can work, especially at this level.  What makes no sense is trying to do both with the same group of players in one half season.  In a nutshell, they hadn't learned LR's way and now they have to learn PW's way.  That's half a season gone - and after we were bemoaning a poor pre-season due to circumstances beyond our control.

Just wanted to add my rambling thoughts on this to the mix.

Any talk of sacking Warne is ridiculous, he needs more time although I’m also of the belief that Rosenior should have been given longer if not the job full time. Comparing the playing styles of the two and expressing any concerns should be fair game though.

As I’ve said above Warne needs more time to implement his style but in my opinion performances have certainly got gradually worse over his tenure so far. Under Rosenior there was a slow build up (painfully so at times) but at least we’d generally dominate possession and create a number of decent to half decent chances in each game. We’re now trying to either get crosses in from wide or knock the ball in behind the opposition defence which generally just results in possession returning the opposition team and from memory have had one shot on target which was from a free kick in the last 2 games. Both styles needed longer to settle and who knows where they will eventually take us but to my eye it seems that the previous style was more successful and getting better performances.

When Warne came in in one interview he said there was not a lot wrong and he wouldn’t be changing a lot however we have generally been playing a different formation than we had played in for the majority of the season before he arrived and are seemingly playing a completely different style. The formation we’re playing doesn’t seem to suit anybody in the squads strengths and shoe horns some into positions they have said in interviews before joining that they didn’t enjoy playing. IMO the biggest strength of our squad is our midfield, we’ve got two good ball players in Bird and Hourihane, two good players who can run with the ball in Sibley and Knight and a couple of Jack of all trades in Smith and Thompson. They are seemingly being negated as all they are now asked to do is knock the ball wide or in behind the opposition defence and then play for second balls when cleared. Winning second balls is important at any level but it is not really any of our midfielders main strengths yet now seems to be a major part of the way we play.

Warne also seems to be a bit ‘old school’ in his approach. I appreciate he wants the players to put maximum effort in but at no point during the game on Tuesday did I think the problem was that we didn’t run enough as he alluded to in his post-match interview. His comments on injuries seems to indicate he thinks players should play through the pain and certain niggles, I’m sure some will but there has been a fair few of these comments already in his short time at the club. He’s also made comments about needing ‘Men’ and in the moment of truth podcast made lots of mentions to senior pros, we’ll have to see how it pans out but it makes you think there may not be as much of a pathway from the academy to the first team as there has been previously and there is a worry we’ll revert to Rowett’s style of signing OAP’s.

It might not seem like it from what I’ve written but I like Warne, he comes across as a funny, intriguing, genuine guy and I hope he can turn it round. However the football and results served up so far has been pretty poor and there are a couple of red flags popping up.

As a pre-appointment sceptic about Warne's style (and therefore appointment) I do find this thread irritating.  Once a manager is appointed support him through to the end of the season at least.  Certainly too many 'fans' have forgotten we were nearly defunct, and we should be grateful to have even a night like last night. 0-0 in the National League North is not the same.

Yet for me that's what never made sense.  Given PW's record he is not a manager the Club would seek out in the Championship.  Instead he is the manager to get us there.  But while Ipswich and Sunderland have taken 4 years (at least) to sort it out in League 1 surely that is not our intended timeframe any more than it was theirs.  DW was brought in to get us promoted quickly whether Clowes has said so or not and while he can probably improve things (for his style) in January, this is a League where the top teams get big points totals and we'll be well out of it I think.  (And I don't like his style BTW).

Goals change games. We gifted Ipswich a goal when we were starting to look likely. Changed the game completely.
We didn’t play well but we were well in the game and contained them while looking threatening in attack, but final ball was seriously lacking tonight.

We are clearly transitioning between two styles, either we are too eager to go front to back and careless in possession, or too slow playing it about at the back and getting caught, we are not the finished article and this is not how Warne wants us playing.

Cashin is the best defender in League one. I said preseason he will be in League one team of the year and think I’ll be right on that one. Smith was excellent. Bird couldn’t get in the game. Sibley was good first half but his performance deteriorated to the point where he was dire. Barky struggled and NML not as effective today. I think NML  looks good at RWB on the whole I think Barky is struggling with it.

Work in progress. There is no need for wrist slashing tonight. Performance level was similar to accy but Ipswich are better. People need to realise we are not one of the two best teams in this division and playoffs is our best hope this season, there is also a strong likelihood this could be a two year job.

I just don't think our teams as good as some folks like to think it is.
The quicker they realise that then the sooner the acceptance will come of what's a realistic target for this season.
On what I've seen since the summer then Top 10 pushing the playoffs with this group should be reasonable.
Anyone even contemplating automatic promotion need to get a grip.

    Wow
Can't be arsed to read all of this thread, but just wow, doesn't take long for the wrist slashing does it.
Ffs, the 1st half wasn't too bad at all, with 1 of the pundits suggesting we may go on to win the game! We have two rookies up front because of Collins stupidity, very little squad depth due to Morris stupidity and playing away at arguably the best team in the division, Warne said the other day they top 9 out of 10 of the stats they look at!
And all the comments on style, we got the ball forwards quickly in wide positions, the fact professional footballers seem incapable of putting a decent cross in is not Warnes fault. Ipswich defended well when we got around the area, but we also messed up.
It isn't Warne fault Curtis did a sh it back pass!
It isn't Warnes fault that the so called 'cheat code' at this level Hourihane hasn't lived up to a fraction of the hype.
Just chill out a bit, we go again on Tuesday, get behind the team and Warne and accept where we are, 4 months ago we weren't sure we would be even competing and had 5 players!

We were short of less players to suit Rosenior's system, than we are to suit Warne's system.
This is what happens when you let a manager recruit for one system and then change to a manager with a different system after a handful of games.

But if PW has to wait 'til January to sort it out, what was the point of bringing him in?  LR would likely have us playing to his pattern and being well set for the Play-offs by January.  I thought PW was brought in to hurry the promotion challenge, not slow it down.  In the fantasy world of us being in the Championship next year it's hard to see compelling reasons to want PW to push us higher given his record, and style of play.
Re last questions - The EFL Trophy is a standalone competition for disciplinary purposes.  Suspensions do include the League Cup and FA Cup (though that's not relevant in this case).

There's a noticeable lack of comment about the styles of football played by the teams above us in the League 1 table.  Certainly there is a shortage of clubs using Warne's style - they must be missing something . . .

There'd be animosity if they thought he was irreplaceable.  But he's a jobbing upper League 1 manager with a proven record of failure in the Championship.  It's hard for them to be sad; it's hard for us to be glad.
