Pitch Invasions: Problems or Celebrations?

Fences are too dangerous though. Crocodile infested moats are the way forwards.

It's a real shame that the poor behaviour of some people is probably going to put a stop to celebratory pitch invasions. Just imagine if Kenneth Wolstenholme's classic world cup commentary had been, "Some people are on the pitch. They think it's all over... oh goodness, a fan has struck Haller and there are several gentlemen dabbing in front of Helmut Schön."

Vietcong style man traps like Rambo used to dig. All round the perimeter. Sharpen up some broom handles to sit at the bottom of the pits, then smear with diarrhoea to ensure anyone who survives an impaling gets a nasty infection to teach ‘em a lesson.

Jesting aside, probably more humane than fencing.

Didn’t one of our fans attack David Speedie back in the day!?  Been happening forever, only now with phones and social media more folk see it. Pitch invasions are great to celebrate, no need for the thuggery

Yes. At the end of the PO Semi-Final at the BBG. Speedie had behaved in true Speedie fashion all game. The Derby fan ran up behind him and booted him up the anorak, for which he should have received the freedom of the City ?

That's part of the problem, of course.

Billy Sharp spends whole games winding up crowds. Any coincidence he was the one assaulted? ?

Some fans are arses, some players are arses.

Billy Sharp got his cumuppance, agree exactly what you are saying Angie,

The football clubs pay players wages and employ players,so if they hear of their own players winding up fans clubs should take some kind of action,a big fine given to charity or ban them from playing for 3 months with no wages paid. Some of these players on megamoney contracts are getting to big for their boots

Some players need that interaction with the fans to motivate themselves into performing, Billy Sharp, Charlie Austin are two that spring to mind.

The thing is, fans can give it but can’t take it, see it all the time.

If you’re going to stand there and shout all kinds of abuse for 90 minutes, don’t go all snowflake if the player goes on to score and sticks up a finger.

Let’s be honest, all these interactions generally start from things being said/sang from the stands.

True, though given his tweet after the incident, and the fact that he wasn't playing, I'm not sure the fan who attacked him could use that as an "excuse". I think also that a headbutt is a serious and potentially dangerous assault, whereas a boot up the jacksie isn't usually lifethreatening. I strongly disapprove of any assault on a player, of course, but some players do indeed invite such responses from the idiot tendency.

Villa keeper assaulted several times when trying to leave the pitch at the end of the game today - thankfully it didn’t look as if he was seriously hurt but it’s only a matter of time before one of these morons does someone some permanent damage. There need to be serious consequences for the individuals and the clubs if this is going to get stamped out….

What a bunch of cockwombles. They are so happy at winning the title that they feel they need to celebrate by attacking the Villa keeper and then go on to wreck their own goalposts!

And Man City say they will ban the offenders. ? How about getting them jailed like Notts police did? No messing there.

You lose your freedom and probably your job. Might make the idiots think twice!

All city can do is ban them, it's up to the police to arrest them.

Yep, realise that but Forest's messages were so much stronger than Man City's, talking about co-operating with police etc.

I just think Man City could and should be saying more.

Man City are above everyone else don't you know.  Fair play investigations for 3 years and nothing happens, supporters moaning on phone ins that there success is too costly and they're getting fed up of paying for tickets, signing the best young players from round the country for peanuts on massive salary,  an option of heated seats for home games,  the omnipresent manager who follows money around and could sit on the toilet reading the paper and win the league with his billion pound squad.  The days of getting humped 6-0 by Derby and losing to Gillingham in Division 3 are gone.  There arrogance doesn't allow them to be concerned with such matters.  Get with the programme ?

I think the general point is that everyone could do a little more to stop it before it escalates. For example with the Forest vs Blades game, Johnson scores in the 18th minute and what does he and the Forest players do? Celebrate in front of the Blades fans and doing the shush motions. So what do the Forest fans do when they come on? Surround the Blades fans and towards the Blades bench. It comes from a lack of respect and superiority that bleeds out of the club (and yes we’ve been there too!). The uncomfortable truth as we well know though is that Forest have got away with this for years.

It’s similar with Everton vs Palace but slightly different, Lamps and Everton created so much hysteria around those games the emotion surrounding it couldn’t be contained. It’s probably kept them up, but they aren’t coming over that great because of it.

But as a contrast remember Hull away in the play offs a few seasons back, pitch invasion at the end but the Derby players and Wassall could get to the Derby fans and back to the dressing room no problem and I think that’s the difference, a bit of respect and understanding you could have easily been in that position.

I don’t mind pitch invasions in certain circumstances, but footballers go to a stadiums to play football and entertain a crowd. The home clubs have to ensure player safety. They shouldn’t be assaulted or put in harms way. If clubs fail this then fine them, then clubs will increase security and it’ll make fans think twice.
