Bad actors who you like

Recommended Posts

I was watching Line of Duty with the missus last night and she turned to me and said 'Kelly MacDonald really isn't a very good actress, but I really like her in things'

I almost spilled my Horlicks with surprise because I have been thinking the exact same thing.

Similarly, Harrison Ford is a terrible actor but I love him in stuff.

Sean Connery was dreadful a lot of the time but his charisma oozed all over the floor.

And I don't think Claire Danes is very good at all, but I like her in Homeland.

What about you?

Disagree about Claire Danes but with you on the others.

Bill Nighy is a one trick pony but always makes me smile. Kelly Reilly is truly awful but quite nice to look at.
John Wayne, Sophia Loren, Ursula Andress all made a career based on looks and personality rather than acting skill.

I started to think about actors and actresses I can’t bear to watch which is another thread waiting to happen!

I think Bob and Mrs Badger should go and wash their mouths out with soap regarding Kelly Macdonalds acting ability...

Agree on the rest though.

I don't really understand the art of acting, so not really sure what makes a good or bad actor.

Maybe the main skill is getting involved with tv/films that end up being great. But is it the acting that makes it great, or is it the story?

I love De Niro as he's being in some of my favourite films (Deerhunter, Godfather, Raging Bull, Casino, Bronx Tale, Goodfellas etc) but I'm not interested in watching some of his latter day films that don't sound much good.

Do I love those films that he happened to be in? Or do I love those films because he is in them? Or maybe it's a bit of both?

I think Jason Statham and Nicolas Cage get a bad rap (sometimes) but their films do what's on the tin and I've enjoyed watching.

Totally with you on Jason Statham. he only plays one character, himself, but I do like that character.

Cage did win an Oscar, but I think his performances depend on the quantity of mood enhancing liquids and substances he's consumed.

!00% with you on Nighy. I was going to say John Wayne but then remembered that I stopped liking his films when I was about 13. Plus he was an utter knob.

Danes only has two modes in Homeland, manic and really manic.

She fits/plays that role really well but I saw her in something else not long ago (I forget what now) and she was appalling.

So I guess in that respect, she doesn't belong in my list. A bit like Brian Cranston. Brilliant in Breaking Bad, embarrassingly bad in Your Honor.

Watch Danes in Temple Grandin. A tour de force and a great film.

John Wayne.

Same character in almost everything, revolting politics (though namby-pamby by the standards of James Stewart, apparently) but gave us 2 oustanding examples of actual 'acting' - The Searchers and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

Not the Green Berets, though. That's just terrible.

I saw John Wayne once complaining about his characters. He said he tried to make those characters different but the directors always wanted him to be "John Wayne" not the character so he stopped acting those characters.

I have liked Bruce Willis since he starred Moonlighting. I even liked his first album.

I went to see (I think) the first Naked Gun with a girl I was seeing. It had sold out so we went in to see a film I'd never heard of.

It was only Die Hard and I ducking loved it.

Sooooo many plot flaws (the ay they talked over each other on walkie talkies was one of the worst), but Willis was made fo that role and Alan Rickman was genius.

Alan Rickman is a great villain.
