Who’d have thought it? Our best deadline day signings are not from Leicester, Peterborough or even Holland. They are from 2014.

Welcome to Derby, Craig Forsyth and Chris Martin.

CF has been superb throughout. CM hasn’t done as much, but that finish was vintage. Never a doubt in his mind that he was going to bury it.

The mystery only deepens - why are we so consistently bloody awful away from home?

Home teams can start strong and buoyed by the fans even poor teams can get at you, for a while at least. I think we still have a slight weakness in leadership terms. Just need a warrior or two to galvanise us or a calm head like Huddz who can find a pass even under pressure. Perhaps Shinnie can be the man to lead by example once he's back. Away from home I think he can be a real asset. A really dominant CB would definitely settle nerves and hopefully with a more experienced and temperate Bielik next season, we might be more of a handful.

On this point, it was quite noticeable that our best away performance was against by far the best team we've played this season, that being Palace, but they tend to sit compact rather than press and then hit teams on the break. They allowed us time to settle AND time on the ball and it did for them in the end. It's frustrating but it's better to have a mental block rather than a lack of ability and our lads will only get better over time.

Well, well, we’ll, what’s going on here then? Go for a few cheeky beers after work thinking there’s nowt worth rushing home for, expecting to find Derby making usual hard work of it...”probs 0-0 or 0-1 with no shots on target for Derby, standard for the season” and we’re 2-0 up??!

We’re at home and not on the road

Excellent half of football in the main that. Exactly what we needed to see after that debacle on Tuesday. We came out all guns blazing, pressing Stoke back, and deservedly got those two early goals. Some much better football being played as well, including in the final third. The second goal in particular was a brilliany example of how to play patiently out the back, and then hit the opposition defence at speed when they’re out of position. The sort of football we played in the first half an hour especially was exactly the style we need to be trying to play all the time - high energy off the ball, patient but incisive on the ball. Waghorn and Rooney in particular have been excellent.

Only slight concern for me was we seemed to do our usual thing of dropping too deep in the last 10 minutes. It cost us on Tuesday and it’ll cost us here if we carry on like that. We need to come out second half and get back at them otherwise it’s only a matter of time until Stoke score, and then it’ll be really difficult. But otherwise that was the best half we’ve seen in a long time, with some of the best football Played in a while too. Need to keep that quality of football up.

Rooney looks to be really finding his feet. Enjoying himself.

Snap shot from Lawrence at range lacks power; not the worst effort. Collected comfortably by Butland.
