WharfedaleRam
Well here we are, a first world country that puts the plans of over 100,000 of our people into disarray because we cannot or aren’t prepared to shoot down a drone at Gatwick. God help us should there be an invasion by an enemy !
Sith Happens
Hopefully saving their bullets for the perpetrators.
Norman
Practice for March. Only explanation. As if we don't have anything at a major airport to deal with drones.
Sith Happens
Reading some of the comments makes me think while i feel really sorry for passengers i also feel sorry for staff, they bear the brunt of people's anger, people complaining that no one is giving them information etc, maybe there is no information to give. Sadly people lash out, sometimes poo happens but taking it out on staff doesn't help.
alexxxxx
Something weird going on down there. Looks targeted which is probably a reason why they're uncertain about letting flights leave. Those drones only have 30min battery life so it's certainly a number of drones
therealhantsram
This is a coordinated attack. It's not some amateur with their Dji drone. Those things won't fly within 2 miles of an airport. These are industrial drones, police are suggesting they could be being controlled from hundreds of miles away. Russians probing our defences? Wouldn't surprise me. They have an axe to grind. therealhantsram
It's amazing to me that the MOD do not have any kind of defence against a drone attack. Three years ago there was a drone attack in Japan, with a drone dropping radioactive material on the Premier's offices. You would think that would be the trigger for our defences (who are some of the best funded in Europe) to put a plan together. But oh no. This is a genuine shambles. ketteringram
I'd have thought an airport would have its own drones, for monitoring lighting and so on, AND chasing, and following intruder zones, to see where they land!

Cisse
I bet it is Greenpeace trying to save the world from unnecessary flying around the globe.
EtoileSportiveDeDerby
We are due to fly from Gatwick over the w/e which is a bit worrying... This is all very odd, the simple answer would be to shoot the fecker(s) down, Trump style. Mind you, if it is a couple of Russian tourist wanting to get the best view over Crawley it may not be such a good idea...

CWC1983
Some expert now saying its an industrial drone which is bigger than off the shelf ones and can do more than 30 mins fly time. Its apparently been flying over the runway.... As long as it doesn't make its way to Birmingham airport tomorrow.

Topram
Not buying into this drone thing, are they hiding something? Just a little odd how this is now 28 hours on and nothing has been done about it, a few airports in Europe have shut or doubled in security over terror threats! Just all doesn’t add up to a ‘drone’

Coneheadjohn
I wondered if it was something or someone involved with this. https://www.versobooks.com/blogs/4171-the-stansted-15-and-the-terror-of-law Some sort of protest!

McRamFan
It is a marketing exercise by a company that wants to sell anti-drone kit.
