Why Why Why Bent

If we aren't going to give Bent at least 5 minutes when we drawing 0-0 at home and have only made 2 subs then when are we going to play a £20k a week striker in the championship.

This is not having a go at Bent, just querying his existence/function at this club.

When you and Bris were saying he doesn't fit the only reason I didn't 100% agree was because Clement had all these ideas about formations etc.

He certainly was never going to get in ahead of Martin in Mac's system. Had McClaren bought him I'd say he'll have to get used to the bench.

But it seems PC has decided to go with what was already here. So yeah, in 433 where does he get a kick? You have to change the whole system to suit him or you haul Martin off.

Bent must be so frustrated

The time has come now for Clement to up our attacking flair, tempo and focus. We are solid enough at the back for top 2. If we include Hanson (who can play CB) we had 4 defenders on the bench tonight. There is no need. We are getting players forward but it isn't working in the final third. Time and again the shot is poor, the movement is poor, the passing is poor, the tempo is poor.

Disappointed Bent didn't get 15-20 mins or so against Burnley. Seemed to be a scenario begging for his intervention.

Bent scored and created several goals at crucial, late stages last season and added zest and finishing power to tip games Derby's way.

He would have ensured that we kept Burnley on the back foot and perhaps made them sit deep, letting us get closer to goal.

Wonder what Kevin Phillips will suggest to Clement about the deployment of Bent? Hope it's: "send him on!"

Remember that Simmo sometimes used to tell Steve Mac to 'go for it' with an attacking sub - and it worked.

Hopefully, Kev can coach the ones who did stay on the pitch to get the ball out of their feet and clobber it hard and early on target, so that we can turn possession and territorial dominance into goals and points....

Agree with /profile/753-sage/">@sage. I'm a very big fan of Darren Bent, but it's pointless having him at the club if Clement refuses to play him in situations such as tonight, It's not the first time this season. As things stand we are falling behind the leading pack because we're not being sufficiently adventurous. At Real Madrid it was probably considered unthinkable to lose. However, draws are largely futile in the Championship. You have to win. We have a phenomenal goalscorer in our squad; we didn't play him and despite all our dominance in terms of territory and possession, we never looked like scoring a goal.

Of course it's tempting to bring him on, but by taking off a midfielder and putting Bent up with Martin, you're stretching the game and asking for trouble from a Burnley side who were waiting for that to happen all game.

They're happy with their point, but they were set up to snatch all three on the counter.
