That doesn’t sound like a SIM only issue. I’ve been SIM only on my iPhone’s since 2010 and never had an issue.

The phone doesn’t know whether you’re on a SIM only plan or a contract. A contract is the same but just includes the device credit payments. 

Sounds like something else was afoot with the update. Reset network settings in the iPhone settings would usually fix an issue like that.

Why games consoles? They don't consume anywhere near what tumble dryers and dishwashers do. Weird bundling there.

It does work via some browsers on smart TVs but not others. Just depends on how good the browser is and how modern the smart TV is.
 

To counter @Tyler Durden I was able to Airplay the game tonight to my Apple TV box with no problems so could be option for next time.

It’s just part of it. Amazon takes £0 (sometimes £1) when you make a purchase then the whole amount when it ships. Most places do it, nothing to worry about. The £0 or £1 hold drops off and is replaced by the normal amount when debited.

Best option as @Carl Sagan says is to get in touch with club. They’ll either cancel it and issue a new one to the correct fan and tell you to destroy that or they’ll just give it to him.
