Despite this, I thought we more or less deserved the draw for our hard work and persistence,  but again tired minds in the defence, a sloppy moment when we switched off at a quick short corner, and two of our most reliable defenders with an almost intuitive understanding going for the same header for their winner.

Disappointed but not down-hearted; we have a run of winnable games coming up, we have the news that Cashin's contract extension has been triggered and Warne himself says he doesn't want anyone to leave.

About his swearing on Radio Derby, I think it must have been edited out of the second playing just before 6pm, as I never heard it. Of course, I might just have missed it like the ref missed all those fouls on TJJ!

I agree on the 6 points from 9 being satisfactory. But when you are 2-1 up at home with not so much time left on the clock 9 points from 9 is definitely within your grasp. The fact that the P'boro were more dominant is irrelevant at that stage. It's all about game management, and that's were the game was lost. The comedic defending for their third goal just summed it up really.

Regarding Warne's on air profanities, I heard the original broadcast on RD, but actually didn't believe what I'd heard until Gibson apologised. Hardly shocking in todays society, but pretty sure that's a first for Derby County manager.

  2. Maybe an upgrade on Wildsmith would help in a promotion push? His decision making isn't always great, as witnessed in the Oxford game. Also the third Peterborough goal, albeit a comedy of defensive errors, Wildsmith should be doing better than the rather lame attempted save of a soft header. If Vickers is considered worthy of a start, then it's safe to assume that Wildsmith is the best we have at the club. In which case we could most probably do better.

  3. Not so much interested in the hypothetical fee that might be achieved if Bird was sold, but more on how are we going to strengthen the midfield to sustain a promotion bid which, will most likely be via the play offs.

  4. Promotion this season would be ideal, but more importantly I would really like to see the club developing a young team from the academy and also retain the young talent that we already have in the squad.

Having watched quite a lot of PL games recently, something that has stood out is the gulf between the teams in the PL and the Ch'ship (more so L1). The athleticism, speed and technical ability of the players is on another planet. And it's not just the top teams, this also applies to struggling teams like Burnley and Luton.

For a club like Derby to ever compete, it can only be achieved by developing young talent and improving our recruitment in general, as the club is unable to pay the crazy fees and salaries required to buy success. Our club has amazing support which is our main advantage over many clubs in the Ch'ship and PL. We also have to look at clubs like Bournemouth and Brighton to try and emulate that model for success.

Just my thoughts 🙂   COYR for 2024

Good performance. Deserved more goals before the 60 min mark. Concerned if Cashin leaves. He has a great partnership at the back with both Fozzie and Nelson.

Yes now that Derby are genuine promotion contenders, keeping Cashin could make the difference. Imagine a line up that included Ward and Bradley and we would need to score 3 goals min to be sure of winning.

Just an observation. Ward gave away a penalty in both the last 2 games..and is obviously not a defender.

Fair point and he's not the only wide player in the game being asked to fulfil defensive duties that he's not cut out for. It's a pity about the two penalties, both for team and the player, who's finally delivery in forward situations is often excellent.

Defend well and outscore the opposition and you climb the table.

As much as I'd love to see free flowing football,  I don't expect to see it or care about it if we keep getting the points needed to get us up.

Yes, after all, it's L1 football and more or less all the teams will have flaws technically and tactically. The trick now is to be the least inconsistent team in the top 6.

Totally agree. Taking the 3 games Rebecca Welch has officiated DCFC, she has done well in all 3. Not perfect but no ref, including me (retired last season at 69), is. I think she's being fast tracked but not because she is female but because she is good at the job.

She might be having an easier ride from players than her male counterparts because most players know that any angry "in her face" moments would be all over the press and social media in a flash and their wife/girl friend/ mother would give them a really hard time. That says more about players than it does about female refs.

From the games that I watched, one of the better match officials in the Qatar world cup was the French female referee.

Certainly any sexist abuse needs to be stamped on but if women are going to be referees in the men's game they will have to learn to deal with vociferous, often antagonistic crowds. They may have aspirations to referee in European competition too and if that's the case they'll encounter much bigger, noisier, dinosaurs than any at Pride Park. To imagine that will ever be different is optimistic.

Totally agree with that. However, meeting diversity targets shouldn't take precedence over ability, regarding the promotion of match officials.

No, don't agree with that Dave. I saw players in the last 10mins choosing to hoof out under pressure when with more quality a pass was available. Im sticking to my incompetence view not bashing the manager on this occasion.

Yes absolutely, these players are paid professionals and shouldn't need to be micro managed in every thought process and kick of the ball. We were playing a very average Wycombe side, after all.

Every game is starting to feel 'big' or maybe important is a better word. Any points dropped will be punished by a number of the teams around us atm.

Fair point and although all teams will drop some points, we have been playing catch up due to some underwhelming form earlier in the season.

Thinking about Cashin cover, do we know how Jake Rooney is getting on ? Regardless of necessary new faces I think Jake has a lot of potential

Definitely one of our younger players with bags of potential, and hopefully set for a good run in the 1st team squad when fully recovered from injury.

the sad predictability of the Eurovision-esque emojis reactions

Yes all part of 'dumb down Britain' unfortunately. Not exclusive to this forum and very much a reflection of society in general.

The title of the thread reads.... You are a legend Mr Clowes. Now, please plan for the next stage

If there is to be a "next stage", Mr Clowes will have the direction of the "next stage" firmly in his head and probably on paper as well. In which case he has already planned for the "next stage". Thinking there isn't a mid term plan in place is, IMO, disparaging towards David Clowes.

IMO, any next stage will require:

    1. Promotion to the SBC and staying there the first season otherwise we won't be attractive to prospective buyers

    2. Any new buyer having to commit, in the contract, to keep the club financially viable and insisting on the same when they sell it on

In the unlikely event that any buyer would sign up to point No 2, it would be subject to so many caveats, sub clauses and legal loopholes that it would never be water tight contractually or stand up to serious scrutiny. Just my opinion.

The last time we were good at recruitment under Nigel, we had almost no non-UK and Ireland based players.

As much as I love the prospect of unearthing exciting talent from the Moroccan Premier League, I just don't think it's particularly feasible at this level unless you invest heavily in scouting.

Probably the area we'll have the most return on investment will be poaching players from others' academies and carefully selecting premier league academy cast offs...

Yes, far less risk of expensive failures and/or potential cultural/logistical complications.
