Last night was pretty rubbish,  the result of course but more evidently the football. I'm slightly worried that a purple patch before the Peterborough game has made Derby look a bit better than we are really. No, it's not necessarily about playing good football, but it is about controlling games, and we don't do that well. We also look quite toothless going forwards at the moment.

The season is far from doomed, but there needs to be a marked improvement for Cheltenham and onwards for us to compete in the positions we should be.

Agree with all of that. The current squad obviously has it's limitations and that's why results like Lincoln and Reading have to be kept in context. I'm not 100% convinced about Warne, but it may well turn out that he's done pretty well with the players at his disposal. I expect we will win against Cheltenham and pick up more points on a mini run, then have a couple of bad results again. Theres bit of a pattern. The main frustration for supporters is that  League 1 is there for the taking this season, but we just can't grind out results when we are in touching distance. With our record, battling it out via the play offs is not a prospect that many will look forward to.

Shaun Barker struggles with it - he calls him Hanrahan.

Hourihane is the player I'm probably most critical of during games, but then I'd rather see him playing where he can get half chances like last night than sitting deep. And being on the edge of the opposition penalty area at corners, not taking them, despite his occasional successes.

Barker just struggles with the co commentary in general. But he seems a decent guy and well respected as a good defender, during his time as a player.

The applause is on the 16th not 18th minute, but I can’t remember what it’s for 🙄

It's possibly applause in support of the tremendous applause during a previous match at some or other EFL ground, in the 16th or it might have been 18th minute 😉

Yep. There’s no doubting his effort but I’ve always seen him as ineffective as a goal threat. Playing with NML and Wilson seems to have transformed him.

    Bravo James!

Agreed, definite improvement in recent months and now looking a really decent and effective L1 striker.

Yes, and but for a defensive mishap that you are unlikely to see in several seasons, our unbeaten run would have continued.

It mystifies me what energises posters of negative bile

The majority consensus was that Derby were beaten by a superior P'boro team. Acknowledging that inevitably, points will be dropped isn't negative and it certainly isn't bile. But hey, don't let the reality get in the way of a gross over reaction. By the way, the the forum is essentially a platform which enables posters to freely express their opinions, within guidelines.

  6. "Brighton have activated a $10m (£7.9m) release clause for Boca Juniors and Argentina Under-20 defender Valentin Barco, 19, who has also been linked with Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid. (TyC Sports - in Spanish)"

From bbc football website 6th Jan.

Could it possibly mean that Brighton will not be pursuing their interest in Eiran Cashin? 🤞

  7. Definitely shouldn't be dropping points in those games, but in all likelihood we will. The P'boro game was a good test for us gave a fair indication of where we are this season;  a decent top six team, but not quite at the level of Pompey, Bolton and Peterborough. Hopefully Warney knows his way around the play offs and we can get promoted via a trip to Wembley.

  8. I always considered Rosenior to be the one influencing the football side of things. Rooney did good job rallying the players and fans when the club was in dire straights. I would have been happy if Clowes had allowed Liam continue. He's proving to be a decent manager at ch'ship level. Rooney has since been found wanting as a manager.

I'd be saying the same at Liverpool about signing Mo Saleh. Awful signing, with him being away with the Egyptian national team.

With all due respect, Salah earns the right and doesn't really owe anything to his club. Look at his record, and the trophy cabinet.

He also pulled off an incredible save in todays game. Don’t want to be wasting limited finance on a keeper.

Making an incredible save doesn't cancel out mistakes and bad decision making. A good, consistent GK is worth quite a lot of points in a season. Just my opinion and if Wildsmith can improve, fair enough, but we certainly could do better.

Despite this, I thought we more or less deserved the draw for our hard work and persistence,  but again tired minds in the defence, a sloppy moment when we switched off at a quick short corner, and two of our most reliable defenders with an almost intuitive understanding going for the same header for their winner.

Disappointed but not down-hearted; we have a run of winnable games coming up, we have the news that Cashin's contract extension has been triggered and Warne himself says he doesn't want anyone to leave.

About his swearing on Radio Derby, I think it must have been edited out of the second playing just before 6pm, as I never heard it. Of course, I might just have missed it like the ref missed all those fouls on TJJ!

I agree on the 6 points from 9 being satisfactory. But when you are 2-1 up at home with not so much time left on the clock 9 points from 9 is definitely within your grasp. The fact that the P'boro were more dominant is irrelevant at that stage. It's all about game management, and that's were the game was lost. The comedic defending for their third goal just summed it up really.

Regarding Warne's on air profanities, I heard the original broadcast on RD, but actually didn't believe what I'd heard until Gibson apologised. Hardly shocking in todays society, but pretty sure that's a first for Derby County manager.

  12. Maybe an upgrade on Wildsmith would help in a promotion push? His decision making isn't always great, as witnessed in the Oxford game. Also the third Peterborough goal, albeit a comedy of defensive errors, Wildsmith should be doing better than the rather lame attempted save of a soft header. If Vickers is considered worthy of a start, then it's safe to assume that Wildsmith is the best we have at the club. In which case we could most probably do better.

  13. Not so much interested in the hypothetical fee that might be achieved if Bird was sold, but more on how are we going to strengthen the midfield to sustain a promotion bid which, will most likely be via the play offs.

  14. Promotion this season would be ideal, but more importantly I would really like to see the club developing a young team from the academy and also retain the young talent that we already have in the squad.

Having watched quite a lot of PL games recently, something that has stood out is the gulf between the teams in the PL and the Ch'ship (more so L1). The athleticism, speed and technical ability of the players is on another planet. And it's not just the top teams, this also applies to struggling teams like Burnley and Luton.

For a club like Derby to ever compete, it can only be achieved by developing young talent and improving our recruitment in general, as the club is unable to pay the crazy fees and salaries required to buy success. Our club has amazing support which is our main advantage over many clubs in the Ch'ship and PL. We also have to look at clubs like Bournemouth and Brighton to try and emulate that model for success.

Just my thoughts 🙂   COYR for 2024
