Injuries have become a joke that isn't funny any more. I realise the game has got quicker and demands on players increasing every season but......I don't recall this level of ACL injuries back in early 70's. Care from club has improved but I wonder if training regimes have become stupidly demanding. Some on Pompey site say that games demand this level of fitness but///what's the point if your star signing is out for six months after his debut? Have watched England train...some stupid routines....players running at each other and jumping at the oppo's shoulders....WTF??? Are they trying to get injured?? Get back to an hour's kickball then off for a ciggy then down the pub! Players had longer careers back then! )not entirely serious but...knowarramean?)

Hi Tamworth....Am on nothing wackier than Players Superkings!
Without getting all 'jumpers for goalposts' this is why football is the great imponderable.
IF we do this..IF they do that...tou can drive yourself mad that way!
True story....I did midweek fixed odds on European games....predict 15 correct results and
win...quite a lot! It was 21.45 and I had 14/15 correct and scores were final. Just waiting on
Brondby to beat Malmo...they were 1-0 up.....clock ticked to 22.00..still no final score.
I was of course spending my winnings....,.at 22.15 result came up.....Malmo had equalised in
    25th minute of additional time!
I bore a grudge..right through to World Cup in Frankfurt 2006....I saw some Brondby fans drinking outside Irish bar...marched up and demanded my thousands of pounds! They laughed, apologised and bought me a beer. SO CLOSE!

    Hi Rams fans,
Have been following your forum for a wee while and thought I'd stick my nose in.
Registering took a while but I got there in the end, so.
To quote Neil Young, 'Tonight's The Night'. I guess tonight's game isn't pivotal, but things might be a little clearer..
Last night's results didn't help either of our clubs, in the end it's in our own hands.
Main reason for joining Rams board is the family split that exists....I am Pompey, my son is Derby., He and I have had
little contact due to past ructions between his mum and I...Last time I saw him he was a part time Celtic fan. (He was
born in Scotland, where I lived and was married for some 20 years. I took him to see a couple of Pompey games but
he wasn't impressed, took him to my school where I was a goalie...unimpressed. It was only when my ex remarried that
the Rams bug seemed to bite. Dunno if picture will show on this thread.
Tonight will be interesting, even if it's a dull game. A draw would suit us fine and I have to say that our final games fill
me with some dread. We had a 'blip' earlier in the season and recovered. This time, any blip will not be recoverable.
I have followed Pompey for over 55 years (youngsters refuse to believe me when I tell them we have an innate ability
to mess up just as we're about to cross finishing line. (I guess this is what attracted me to Hearts when in Edinburgh,
very similar ground, fan base and fatal flaws!) How you can beat us....classified I'm afraid but we have some very obvious
weaknesses you can exploit. Don't go into game looking for a point, teams that have done well at Fratton have come out
    and taken game to us.
Why are we top of the league? Many fans mutter 'They're nothing special..have seen much better' These fans are often right.
Many of our performances have been sub-optimal BUT the one aspect that has run through most games is a newfound
belief that, even if we o 0-2 down, the situation is recoverable. Games last 95 minutes or so these days...we manage to keep
believing the situation is retrievable. It's this that has sent us to the top...plus a pretty stingy defence, a creative midfield
and strikers who, on their day can tear any League One side to shreds. Last game against Wycombe their left back wanted
to go off suffering from 'twisted blood'. (Gag borrowed from Man Utd, George Best joke.) On their day, Kamara and Yengi,
supported by Bishop and Saydee are a real handful.
Lat night's results went pretty much according to form but previous games have shown all the maths and super computers
in the world simply cannot predict what will actually happen.
I hope you guys go up....Derby are a 'proper' club, part of the game's history BUT...so are we. Nobody has a divine right to be
'top of the tree'.....Anyone else remember the hushed tones from tv pundits when the mighty Man Utd were relegated?
It was as if there had been a death in the family.
Treat both success and failure as imposters....keep supporting your club. Good luck to all Rams making the journey down..
I see a few travelled down over the weekend and have already sampled some of our local beers.
    All the best Rams...., Nick

Caught the local bus down to Portsmouth harbour this morning and asked the bus driver if he'd accept my gold card. He said, "From God's own county - definitely!" He was wearing a Derby County lanyard and turns out he is from Allestree! Got to be a good omen, that.

Be careful what you wish for Dave. Smith at RB would guarantee Hourihane a place in the "2" in front of the back 4.

Crikey I’m nervous - not just tonight but for the next 5 games.  I think we’ll need an extra body in midfield so I’d bring Thompson in, maybe for NML as he’s had a knock recently.  Ward and CBT in the wide positions and Collins up front, if he’s fit enough.
With yesterdays results we have to go for it, playing for a draw doesn’t tend to end well.  And PW, his staff and players keep talking about trying to catch Portsmouth.  If that’s the aim, and why shouldn’t it be, we have to try to win.

Although we didn't have Nyambe last season when playing a back four gave us a good run. IIRC we had Smith at right back during that period. It is quite possible that playing a back four bring us success because playing a  back four is successful!

My concern is if we set up with a midfield two ….. again, because we will be over-run …. again. Especially if Hourihane starts, because then we will only have a midfield one and a half. It will also mean we have gone for “whack it wide and lob it into the box” …. again, so all Portsmouth will have to do is what Northampton did - put an extra man on each wing back.
We need to go 3 in midfield, and we need to play our game and make Portsmouth worry about us, not the other way round.
We can get at least a point from this match if we want to, and if we are allowed to.

Nothing I stated that I feel he needs to work on is "not playing to his strengths". It's not asking the world for him to track a runner or pass and move.

Or we take the Brian Clough approach of play to his strengths, ie give him the ball and let him do what he is good at, rather than him spend time doing what he is weaker at. It got the best out of Alan Hinton, and John McGovern - neither of whom were known for “Ebou Adams” like challenges. And no, this isn’t an attempt to compare Brian Clough and Paul Warne! Don’t even go there!
