We're trying to replace last season's player with the best shot accuracy and minutes per goal ratio in league 1. This player has left for nothing and we are trying to replace him for next to nothing. On top of this PW has his own exacting requirements of a player and I know that certain players who are backed up by some impressive stats, were not considered because of their attitudes.
Last season proved that a 22 goal striker is not the golden bullet for promotion, but maybe a more balanced squad without a star player will get the job done. Last season with Didzy's goals and his songs on the terraces, we seemed to be a one man team. Hopefully, this season, the rest of the squad won't feel like bit part players to one star player.

There seems to be an assumption on the part of some posters that we need to replace all of Didzy's goal total for last season but this isn't necessarily the case. A tighter defence, particularly in the crunch games against other likely playoff opposition could mean we score fewer goals yet gain more points - let's not forget over a quarter of his league goals came in 2 games against teams which finished 22nd and 24th in the league, where there was a 9-0 aggregate scoreline.
I'm certainly not decrying his contribution last season - he was a class above every other member of our squad and produced much of the entertainment throughout the season - but I'm far from being convinced that we have to replace his 22 league goals for us to have a successful season and yes I'd still like to see us sign a young striker with pace to increase our attacking options.

I think that it is unfair to lump all players in the category of only going where the highest wage is. I'm sure many players also consider location, the manager, ambition of the club, ground and training facilities, crowd, length of contract, potential bonuses, etc. If a player doesn't want to play for Derby because another team are prepared to pay 10 or 20% more, then he's not the kind of player that PW will want at the club.

Transfer fees aren't normally paid over the length of the contract, especially the smaller ones. The amortisation of their value on the books is now spread over the length of the contract.
The problem with some of these players that haven't signed like May, is that the wages they are demanding is way above what we value them at. We're not the MM Derby whereby we pay whatever the player demands.

We aren’t going to miss promotion in the first month.
It may well be that we have to start with pretty much what we have at present and that the signings may come later in August.
I’d rather we waited for the right one and didn’t just grab what’s available in the cheap rack.

But, virtually all of that will come out of future season's budgets with maybe a modest addition to this year's salary as a sweetener.

Just my view but I think you are wrong , we already have two strikers most div 1 clubs would be very happy with in Collins and Washington, add to that players that would walk into any div 1 side like Laing ,hourihane , cash, bird , barks then the fantastic recruitment at the back which includes wing backs who get forward and can hit a cross , I really don’t see mid table , I think you are hung up on seeing  names you believe will walk the division but really we are not that club and don’t have that owner and after the last few years thank god for that , I see a side that have the quality and management that will be right in the shake up 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't understand all the negative wrist slashing over the supposed decision to see how Brown starts the season. The transfer deadline is 1st September, before which we have 6 competitive and 2 fairly competitive pre season games to play. Brown will be given enough involvement in these games to show whether he is ready to contribute to the team.
If he isn't up to it then then we can get someone in on the deadline day merry go round, if it's good enough for everyone else then surely it's good enough for Derby. On the other hand, if he shows signs that he is good enough, we will not only be saving wages on another signing/loan, but also helping develop one of our academy players, which is the whole point of the academy.
Had we had been able to bring players in, the likes of Ebowei likely would not have had their first team chance, unfortunately those same circumstances prevented us from getting the full benefit from him.

I honestly don’t mind this at all. Brown’s an exciting prospect and I’d much rather we utilise a homegrown ‘Dobbin’ than waste a loan slot and fee.

Slight update, 1 more Striker in on a permanent deal, with Dajaune Brown given the first few games to see how he performs. Warne a massive fan of him and wants to use him as the 4th striker. However a loan striker is not off the cards. Creative number 10 looks like it’ll be a loan. Robinson and Thommo impressive and will be rotating in that midfield 2/3

He will be eligible to play for the u21s as an over age player. This may be useful in the event of an injury crisis, as he will maintain some kind of match fitness and be able to back up the first team squad, if the situation demands.

You'd be concerned if we had injuries now, I was almost suicidal at the thoughts of injuries last season. No real back up at keeper, no RB to start with, no real back up at LB, left footed Fozzy having to play RCB relying on players closer to 40 than 30 at CB cover. God help us if Didzy had got injured.
With exception of the main striker, we are in a better place throughout the squad. With money coming in for Knight and Bielik, the main striker issue should be sorted.

In actual fact, when Warne left Rotherham they were nicely placed with 14 points from 9 games, which over the full season, would have seen them finish in 5th. Whereas the new manager's record would have ended up with 44 points, equal with Reading and Blackpool. They went from over 1.5 points per game with Warne to less than point per game without Warne.
In actual, actual fact Rotherham without Warne, had the equal lowest points per game average along with Blackpool, Reading and Wigan both received points deductions.

Can we afford to be one dimensional for the whole match, every match? What if the opposition work out a way to combat that style of play? Surely we need a Martin type player, preferably a bit younger, who could completely change the way we play, when required?
