Our best two players today were Knight, playing at RB, and McGoldrick who is probably who Knight would replace if he moved there.

Sure Rosenior would’ve loved to move him there in the second half. Unfortunately we are not really in a position to carry a right back to bring on in his place

Surely in a midfield 3 Knight would the box to box player with McGoldrick or Sibley as the number 10 and Bird holding.

His biggest asset is his great engine he will run all day long, today we just ran out off legs in the middle of the pitch.

Can’t agree with that. Think them going a man down and us switching off as a result got them their goal. Think we would have likely won the game still 11v11. Fair play to them for remaining attacking with 10 men to get the goal, just think their subs after that were a bit curious.

Not sure whether we switched off or they upped their game, in any event scoring with 10 men against the meanest defence in the league is some achievement. Until Knighty came up with an unstoppable header i really couldn’t see us scoring past their giant keeper.

  3. Wildsmith 6 solid apart from a nice pass to Marriott

Knight 8 great goal and MOM - but needed in midfield

Forsyth 7 made a difference, gave us an outball

    Roberts 6 did nothing wrong

Korey Smith 6.5 made an impact, helped with retaining possession

     Cashin 7 another good game

    Stearman 7 see Cash

Dobbin 6.5 rabbit in headlights 1st half, improved a little in 2nd. Xtra half for assist

McGoldrick 7 scored the winner, need i say more

Sibley 7 played the whole game! Did well.

Hourihane, 6 disappointing, needs to control games

    Bird ? 6 see Hooli

Collins 5 badly needs a goal.

Barkhuizen 7.5 best game in a Derby shirt.

Peterborough with 11 men were better than us and would have won had they retained 11 for the whole game. The P’bro No 8, Taylor was bossing the game, certainly in the 1st half. The turning point was the sending off (kudos to Barks) despite them scoring when down to 10 men. As LR said in his post match, that was the worst we have played this season, possibly because they didn’t let us play.

@angieram thanks for your continued input and observations. Undoubtedly we have a very honest group of players this year and I am very confident that they will come good. Like many others, I am concerned though about our scoring record; we have had 69 shots over 5 league games from which we have scored 3 goals. That's a ratio of 1 goal every 23 shots - worrying because we only average 14 shots at home. I've looked at Peterborough's record this year and their ratio is far richer; they too have a robust defence so we are in for a tough game this Saturday. I know we have been playing against "parked buses" away from home but there is a smidgen of suspicion in my mind that this isn't just bad luck but indicative of a more embedded structural issue; we haven't quite got the balance right - we are like an engine that just isn't quite firing on 4 cylinders. No doubt LR is working constantly to get this right; we know from the days of Mac1 especially, that small tweaks here and there can work wonders. Knight in midfield, Bird in the middle and Sibley starting regularly at left midfield, a fit McGoldrick up front and we could see a difference. So where would that leave Hourihane? I agree with you about him; a bit of a "socks down", languid, strolling sort of player; typically Aston Villa silky skills (that ball to Barkhuizen V Barnsley, first-time, arced over 2 opposition players to release Barks down the left was "liquid football"); Huge talent - could we afford to leave him out? I doubt it. His dead-ball delivery is not dissimilar to the great Alan Hinton; on a sixpence; his cross from the corner V Barnsley was what caused the defender to OG. It will be good to see it unfold.

Thanks again for your input. Best wishes.

Just how many of those 69 shots could be classed as ‘nailed on’ chances to score. My guess is very few.

Part of the problem may be that when we turnover possession our first thought is to go back and keep the ball, instead of immediately looking for the killer forward pass. The other part of the problem may be that we don’t seem to win possession high up the pitch, with most turnovers from goal kicks, throw ins, free kicks and corners.

At the moment we are playing safe football, inevitably resulting in low scoring games.

Just an opinion, I don’t have the stats to back this up.

It has helped us keep clean sheets in 2 of our 4 league matches so far as well as achieving 7 points from a possible 12. It’s not a bad return for a squad hastily thrown together in the shortening shadow of our recent misery.
Knight works as a rb option currently in the view of the coaching staff, all the noise they’re making in interviews seems to suggest that won’t change.

I agree with everyone saying Knight is one of the best midfielders at the club and I would rather see him in a midfield 3 as the box to box option alongside Bird sitting deeper and probably Hourihane; but that in itself then raises questions. Playing Knight in midfield potentially means leaving out one of Sibley/Hourihane/McGoldrick/Bird or face playing one of them out of position also in place of NML/Barkhuizen/Collins.
These are the headaches Rosenior has to resolve and as much as we can discuss and debate the rationale behind it there’s not a great deal we can actually do to affect it. I do wonder if everyone would be as troubled by this particular tactical choice if it was 12 points from 12 and the goals were flying in?
Isn’t it nice to be having these discussions again ?

But we didn’t get 12 points out of 12 and the goals aren’t flying in.

Question is would Knight in midfield have made that difference? Probably.

My point about Fozzy is you really do not want him as involved in the build up play as we are currently asking our fullbacks to be.

I mean yeah I'm not saying a left footed right back can't exist. I'm saying it'd likely hurt our build up play because he can't open his body up as easily.

I think we lose significantly more than we gain by shuffling around like that.

Football is a simple game, you get the ball, you pass it, you score, repeat.

Playing the best players in their best positions will help to do this. I would argue our best midfield consists of Knight, Bird and Hourihane. I would also argue that currently our best available defenders are Roberts, Stearman, Cashin and Forsyth.

I just dont see how playing Knight at full back helps us to be a better team.

Knight is a good midfielder and quite likely would be part of our best midfield three. It's more debatable if we want to play with a 10 like Sibley or McGoldrick that he'd start though.

There is a couple issues sticking Roberts there. Him being left footed would hinder him rather than help. It'd make harder for him to find the right winger or the midfielder in front of him or to take the ball on the half turn. Also it means we'd have to play Fozzy and he's really unsuited to playing that role so you would have to further shuffle the team around to compensate.

Fozzy is a Chamionship standard LB, I would argue that he is as good if not better than Roberts at LB.

I can think of a few RB who have successfully played the LB position and Roberts seems to have 2 good feet.

We gain more than we lose and Roberts is a good defender whereas both Oduroh and Smith would be targeted aerially.

  8. Knight is an international midfield player who was voted MOM in the last international match.

A midfield 3 of Bird, Knight and Hourihane is without doubt our strongest midfield and most probably the strongest in L1.

Knight offers goals from midfield, something we seem to be short of.

Knight offers aggression, tenacity and legs in midfield again something we seem to be lacking.

He doesn’t get bullied, reminds me of Roy Keane!

I would argue that Roberts at RB would be a better option than JK in terms of defensive and aerial ability. Being left footed would also help when coming inside onto his left foot. Odurah and Smith just not good enough options at RB IMHO.

  9. NML and Barks need a rest. Roberts at RB (not much different to playing LB).

Liam mate, play this team and we will win, trust me.

Well my fears for LR's reign are starting to show themselves. We're only 4 matches in and yes we did have an awful pre season but i think most fans would acknowledge that the style of play is very similar to what we have seen the past 2 seasons.

At the moment we seem to enjoy possession, insist on playing out from the back (despite CD's weak spot on this matter) but not actually create an awful lot.

I acknowledge that the players are still finding out about each other and i'd also agree that we're 3/4 signings light from us having genuine promotion contenders squad depth. But at the moment i don't look at how we approach games and get excited that we're going to put teams to the sword.

LR is somewhat compromised that he's had no alternative but to use the coaches already within the set up but if things don't change soon then i think fans will become restless and LR will find himself without a job.

Overall i believe this smells a lot like the Clough/McClaren season where the players are there, but the tactics/training/selection aren't quite at it and are stifling our potential. I hope I'm wrong and its just a case of shaking off the pre season drama, but wondered what others thoughts are currently towards LR. I'm fully behind him for now...

    The dreaded vote of confidence…

Thanks to all of you for your ratings & comments which are always insightful. As the Great Man said "Derby folk know their football..."

    Summary

A few fans used the phrase "Cashin MOTM by a Country Mile", and that's precisely what the ratings show. His average mark was 8.67 which included two ratings of 10. The next closest was Hourihane with 6.97 then NML with 6.92. I have to say I was immensely impressed with Cashin's performance & was not surprised to hear his team mates applauded him in the dressing-room afterwards. He really stepped up in Curtis's absence. I'm not surprised though - I could see his quality when I first saw him at Notts County last year.

The team average rating was 6.64 {shown by the red dotted line). The average Team Aggregate Rating was 88. 2 which compares with 82.88 V Charlton, 83.6 V MTFC & 80.98 V OUFC.

The number of raters increased this time to 33 - the highest yet this season compared with next highest which was 26 versus OUFC.

We are accumulating a lot of potentially interesting statistics about player ratings, including by forum raters, so keep them coming.

I will do a year-to-date summary which will follow soon. It will be interesting to see if ratings pick up seasonal variation (in player form) or if they remain fairly static, reflecting rater bias. Ratings probably reflect a bit of both - so hard to differentiate. The Infographic is below:

    Barnsley Infographic.jpg

On reflection 4 for Smith may have been a little harsh. Having said that subs need to affect the game in a positive way and Smith failed to do that IMO.

No slight on Roberts, who I think has made a very composed start to his Derby career, but Forsyth impressed me going forward against Mansfield and offers more of an aerial outlet when distributing out the back - I’d like to see him given a chance in the League. Smith has struggled to make much of an impact in the more advanced midfield role (he is definitely more defensive minded), and Sibley has been banging on the door with his substitute appearances, so he to finally get his start here. Think Barkhuizen is struggling (in the league at least) to have much influence from the less familiar left side, and Dobbin looks a real exciting prospect based on what I’ve seen of him so far, so I’d like to see how he does from the start in a league game.

I rate Roberts more as a LB than a CD but i am surprised that he’s not been considered as a stopgap RB. He’s good defensively, decent in the air and looks to be reasonably two footed.

Seen a few right footed left backs in my years supporting DCFC.

  14. He can play right back very well but in terms of contributing to the team he would provide much more in centre mid.

As a box to box midfielder he will run all game, he has an eye for goal and he can break up play. Pretty sure he was MOM in the last game for his country.

Good in a two or in a three, I would play him as the runner between DM and AM. A midfield three of Bird, Knight & Hourihane would be excellent in L1 imo.

I got the No.74 from Tenant Street, to Perth Street, Breadsall Estate. My mother used to work at the little cafe across the road before moving to the 'Savoy' chip shop on the Morledge.

No 77 to top of Chadd Park Rd. Sometimes caught the 74 but had to get off at the cemetery stop and walk the rest…

Not in any way wishing to sound condescending but it does make you worry about peoples future if they haven’t got a few hundred pounds savings that they could access . My sons has already said he might have to borrow the money from me.

Sadly it does sound very condescending.

  17. For his own sake Tom needs to move on. We can’t afford his wages in league 1 and our fans will always associate his name with Joiner gate.

I always think that he would be a better player if he could remember that there is no i in team.

    Thanks Tom, but no thanks.

I can't see liquidation happening, we already know there are local people prepared to fund the club if needed to fulfill the seasons fixtures. It's a mess, of that there is no doubt. But can't see liquidation happening.

So how long have we been in Administration?

Are we now any further forward?

Lots of interest, lots of time-wasters.

Not too soon at all. It's two weeks before the League One fixtures are due to be out. The EFL need to be sure we can actually complete the season before scheduling them. Things are going to need to happen at record speed if we're going to survive. I still think we probably will but it's not far off 50:50 at this point. We need to accept that liquidation is a realistic possibility. The question asked by Jimbobob are entirely legitimate at this point. Personally I'd like to know the answers - it would make it easier to deal with the possibility that it might happen!

Agreed. I have been a DCFC supporter for a long time and would be extremely upset if my football club, an original league member were be liquidated as a result of incompetent and irresponsible financial management.

Having said that if the result is a phoenix club, say a Derby United, renting and playing at Pride Park having purchased some of the DCFC assets and playing in the National League and owned by Derby supporters - I would almost certainly continue to support a Derby based team.

  20. Allsop - 7 some decent saves, no errors

Byrne- 7 did well going forward

    Forsyth- 9 MOM

Stearman- 7 steady, had to be careful after a 15 min yellow

Davies- 7.5 one shocking mistake, otherwise inspirational

Shinnie- 7  every team needs one

Bird- 8 love this lad and he is getting better

    Morrison- 7 good player

    Knight -8, what an engine

    Lawrence- 6 marmite

Baldock- 5 doesn’t unsettle defenders, runs but needs to do more

Stretton -7 , quick, will get better, needs to get in the gym
