The October international break will be a huge milestone for Warne and his staff.

A full year in charge and if there are no signs of improvement between now and then, how can he possibly stay on?

With no midweek league game until October, there really isn’t any excuses at this point. Plenty of time on the training ground.

I personally don’t think Warne will improve or take us up in what is a weak league.

I’d hedge my bets and say some of the players aren’t even playing for him.

But would DC pull the trigger one year into a 4 year deal?

It would be his first huge call to make

I would say that it would be his second huge call to make

Deserved more of a chance with us, was with us through all the **** was part of the management team that galvanized the players in the worst times, if anything he should've got one full season.

I was surprised that LR didn’t get a little more time. Felt that the players were happy and in his last game (was it Wycombe) they showed they he had their full support.

Big loss really, not just in results but in style of play. A lot of our fans have grown up watching an attractive style of football that is easy on the eye. Many of us will not put up with this PW anti football for very long…

  3. Good result for Hull yesterday.

While I am pleased for Liam, I can’t help lamenting our loss.

”It feels great as we have come to a massive club with a fantastic coach and team.

"Not just the win, but the manner of the performance and the way we stuck to our guns and pressed the ball. We played some outstanding football.

"I have been here for eight months and we wouldn't have been capable of doing that when I first came in. That's why I keep saying it's a process.

  4. Pleased to see a back four today, at least in the first half. Rooney did well at RB and it was good to see Cashin in his preferred position of LCB. A back four of Rooney, Nelson, Cashin and Forsyth looked solid.

Upfront Waghorn and Washington worked hard and combined well for the goal. Thommo playing just behind the front two was tremendous, showing energy, skill and determination. For me he was MOTM showing a willingness to commit defenders and plenty of energy to get around the pitch. NML at right wing also did well, combining well with Rooney in a partnership with potential.

Smith and Hourihane in CM lack legs and bite. We missed Bird and need someone who can break up the play, organise and do the dirty work when it’s needed, Hourihane does at least contribute goals and assists, Smith for me adds nothing.

The 2nd half started in a similar fashion to the 1st half but it wasn’t long before we reverted to a back 3 which became a back 5 and subsequently a back 10! I am always surprised when teams change tactics and stop doing the things that seemed to be working.

Finally conceding 56% possession at home to Fleetwood is for me a disappointing statistic and illustrates very well the fact that we fail to control games when in a winning position.

Thinking about it rationally, I can't envisage a scenario this year where Warne gets the sack. The investment of a 4 year contract and our limited finances must be too large. However, I can see a scenario where the fan base becomes so toxic Warne can't handle the pressure and walks out. He'll resign if he doesn't right the ship in the next 10 games. You can see the fans turning already on him. He's not used to having 25,000 people boo or shout at him, and it must take its toll.

I can’t see Paul Warne and his assistants walking away from around 3 years worth of probably the highest salaries they have ever received. Yes it may take it’s toll but I am pretty certain that we would have to sack them, no way would they resign.

Even an agreement by mutual consent is unlikely in my opinion. We simply cannot afford to sack the managerial team at this moment in time.

All very worrying if you are a Derby fan….

  6. Excellent post and very good analysis of the current situation in my view.

Are we developing as a club in the right direction not just in the short term but also in the longer term is it sustainable?

Like many others I was surprised by PW appointment and even a little disappointed that LR was not given more time. Progress has not been made under PW so far, there are concerns about our style of play and our younger players do not seem to be trusted.

I suspect that DC will sit tight and review our position around the turn of the year

  7. Good post Dava, gave you a like!

I agree with you in part but I think it would be easy to improve his short passing game, as in win the ball and give it to someone who can play.

As you say, I can’t see him playing much higher than L1 as a CB, maybe his ceiling would be higher as a CDM…

  8. Been thinking that Cash has not seemed to be at his best playing LCB in a 3, this set me thinking about what might be his best position.

His best games by far have been as one of two CB’s in a back 4 but for me he he lacks the height to make a top class CB and tends to struggle against the taller strikers.

He doesn’t have the pace to be a full back or wing back but has good passing ability, a great attitude and determination in abundance.

Many will disagree but I can see him playing as a CDM in front of a back four, possibly in a 4-1-4-1 (or 4-3-3) formation. He seems to read the game very well and is able to pass short or long. Could be what is needed to protect an uncertain looking defence.

I thought all three looked like that 1st half, 2nd half Nelson looked much better.

I also thought Nelson looked the best of the 3, especially in the 2nd half. Don’t think a 3 suits Cashin who seemed to play more as a LB.

Bradley & Nelson as our two CB’s in a back four, would be the better option for me.

Yes and let’s play him in a different position that obviously doesn’t suit him and play Smith in his position who is bang average at best.

For me Smith is nowhere near good enough, he waves his arms around a lot but achieves very little. If Warne seriously thinks that Smith is better than Bird in CM, and that Bird is a number 10 then I am really concerned about his ability to manage our football club.

3 at the back can absolutely work.  But if helps if you have two things…

    • A plan of how to attack and exploit the oppositions weaknesses
    • You have pace (across the team but) particularly in your back line that get’s you out of the poop when teams sit in, invite you to push on and hit you on the break

Against Wigan it seemed that the two wide CD’s were often too wide due to the wing backs playing high up the pitch. This left SB as the lone CD. Playing a back 4 may have prevented Wigan’s 1st goal with a covering CB, in my head I have Cashin stepping in to whip the ball of their attacker.A little later on in the game a big hole again appeared in the centre of our defence, giving Wigan a great 1v1 opportunity from which they should have scored.

My take on it is that 3 at the back is quite a difficult system to play and we actually looked much more comfortable later on when we reverted to a back four. Just my opinion…

Didn't Man City win the treble last season with 3 at the back?

I would say that Man City adopt a very flexible system and have very skilful and intelligent players who are able to interchange positions and adapt to different systems.

I don’t like 3 at the back but then I’m not the Manager of DCFC.

Yes, I wonder if there was a bid in for either of these two that the replies would be the same? You could ask why there aren't bids in for Smith and Hourihane but there is for Bird?

As an Academy graduate I think that Max is very under appreciated by the average Derby fan. Even overheard one  say that Korey Smith is a better player!

  14. …doesn’t work in my humble opinion. Has anyone won anything playing 3 at the back.

A number of times today there appeared to be a huge space in the middle of our defence. Sonny Bradley is undoubtedly a good player but is not the quickest and seems to have a habit of going awol.

Two CD’s make the defence more secure while still allowing full backs to overlap and wingers to cut inside.

Happy to be shot down - discuss. 🙂
