So I'm putting this post together because since the start of the season there have been question marks on Knight starting at RB which have ranged from mildly questioning to outright ridiculing.

But very frequently what gets missed is why Knight is starting there, why he's good at it and why it actually relies on his skillset. So I'm going to play devil's advocate and argue for Knight should start there.

    Tactics

I think that Rosenior identified that a few things going into the season; we have talent in midfield, we likely have technical superiority and teams are likely going to sit back and try to counter or press and try to counter. And so he's built tactically from that point. You can see this in how our flanks are set up.

Wingers play high and wide and are both fast, phsyical and good 1v1. A compact opposition has to stretch or leave a man free. A team that presses always has to be wary of that threat in behind if they overcommit. Also it helps provide space in the centre for our midfield to take advantage of.

Meanwhile our fullbacks essentially play as midfielders when we have the ball. They tuck right into the middle operating from a much more central postion and given the responsibilities of a deep midfielder in getting the play going and supporting the play. This provides extra functional bodies in the build up play making it theoretically easier to pass through a press and it allows other midfielders to go take up dangerous positions further up field as they don't have to worry so much about the build up. Same applies to the wingers who can play high and wide because the fullbacks are functionally midfielders.

This isn't something revolutionary that Rosenior has done. In fact it's almost identical to what Guardiola has done in the past (who often would play midfielders like Delph at fullback).

    Inverted fullback

The demands on this role are different that was is typically called for. They need to very comfortable on the ball in central areas, their passing needs to be good, they need to know what to do positionally when they are in midfield and they need that high energy to cover ground, support the attack and quickly get back into position. Functionally it operates a lot more like a wide midfield role on the ball.

    Why Knight ?

Simply put he excels at all of the above qualities is the primary reason whilst being sound defensively. There is a good reason why most our success in attacking has happened down the right. Playing him there essentially allows us to cheat and play another midfielder

The second reason is with a decent number of midfielders going into pre-season but no right back in sight with restricted dealings in the window. It made sense to coach someone into the role and Knight ticked the most boxes.

Why not X instead of Knight ?

Odurah - Seems a decent prospect but looked a touch raw and shaky in pre-season. Likely isn't ready just yet.

Smith - This could work but Knight has more energy and crucially Smith hasn't had the same coaching time to coach him into the role.

Thompson - isn't as phsyical as Knight which could get exposed defensively and would need coaching into the role.

Stearman - This is a joke right ? He looks too awkward at CB on the ball never mind in midfield areas and would get exposed for pace.

Roberts - The role benefits from someone playing on their stronger side so they can open their body easier. Also needed at LB as Fozzy can't really play that role reliably.

New Right Back - Well yeah... but that's increasingly unlikely to happen but it won't be for a lack of trying.

Should he play midfield anyway ?

Now that's a tricky question. Because we have a balance problem in midfield (at least some of the time) that you can point to Knight as a fix. And Id agree with that to a large degree that Knight as one of the three would help. The two counterarguments I might make are that problem might be better solved by playing either Sibley or a fit McGoldrick and by moving Knight from there you might be just shifting a problem rather than fixing it overall.

TLDR; The way we play calls for someone comfortable in midfield at right back. And Knight is likely the best at it we have.

(PS you may be able to tell I'm bored because I'm ill at home)

I don't disagree with Knight being the best option we have at RB

But in my opinion we lose more in midfield than we gain by having him out of position. I think any downside of having the others at RB is outweighed by what Knight can offer in the middle

I worked at EDS at the time (early 2000s), and we also did the official DCFC website. Was a fun job for sure, lots of meetings at the ground and we did some pretty pioneering stuff. Then PremiumTV came along and offered a cut-price generic template to all the FL clubs and 90+% of them took it (including Derby). You may remember it as the time when everyone said "why has the website suddenly gone so crap?" ?

I still have a folder of old promo photos we had to scan. Lots of pictures of fans. I bet some of you lot are in there!

Funnily enough, what was EDS is now called DXC and they just set up a similar deal with Manure

    https://dxc.com/uk/en/manutd

But to get back on topic FWIW I don't think pressuring Derby to drop betting sponsorship is the right approach. It needs to be handled at a national level on ALL sports, and it should be via a mandatory levy on the betting companies to go towards gambling addiction support

At the moment it's a voluntary 0.1% - which isn't a lot and betting companies can choose not to do it

GambleAware are proposing a 1% mandatory levy

    https://www.begambleaware.org/news/gambleaware-calls-mandatory-1-levy-prevent-gambling-harms-crisis

If you want to do something proactive for your friend, then lobby MPs to get behind this proposal.

This is the best option for those wanting change. A few clubs will get on board, but that will probably drive up the price for those who do accept the betting money (less gaps for them to advertise drives the price up surely?) Get change at the top and you'll see the results you want.

I'm still of the opinion shirt sponsorship convinces people to swap where they bet more than drive new customers. I'd say those half time adverts offering in play betting draw in a lot more new customers and are a lot more damaging.

    That's just my opinion though

The relevant checks were done though, the problem is that the standard procedure for checking this stuff clearly isn't stringent enough.

How do we know that the admins were even allowed to check specifically where the funds used as proof originated from?

Don't hate the player, hate the game!

I don't know what the standard is but in my opinion (with no experience in yne field) would some checks on how they got the cash. When you buy a house they check for anti money laundering, shouldn't they do the same buying a business?

Then our administrators and EFL balls up

    Admin ballsed up big time

EFL (for once) aren't to blame for me. They were shown the details, and would have had some faith in Q that relevant checks were done. We'd have been calling the EFL out if Q said he had the money but EFL dragged their heels saying we want more proof of the origin. In the eyes of the fan that would be them being anti Derby again.

I backed Q for the most part, but it's down to them to see not only proof of funds, but maybe get an understanding and proof of where it came from. No one guessed he was using company money so all those that said "I told you so" ended up being justified but not because they knew any better.

    Similar...

But on twitter everyone replying to every boxers tweet with "champ" at the end. And most the time said boxer has never been champ. I just find it cringe that someone would meet a boxer they don't know and kick arse enough to call them champ

Yes, let's not use any imagination anymore ??

Although you probably would have said the same about Rooney joining Derby

Cracking signing for them.  You can see why they could Jesus go.

Although it does sum up how mad football is.  During the commentary they referred to the £51M fee being a bargain and I think Gary Neville called it mates rates.  In PL terms it is a bargain, but 3 months ago we couldn’t get anyone to pay that for the entire club, including the stadium!!

They also quote that figure for effect, but fail to mention agent fees etc that took it closer to 100m

  8. Sold programs at Notts as a teen, which gave you free entry. So I've seen them 100's of times (actually more times than the team I support) and always wanted them to do well. It obviously helps that they've not really been anywhere close to us so they aren't a threat.

As a kid I remember wanting a Dortmund shirt.

Also like to see how the local teams like Long Eaton and Ilkeston are doing.

  9. Other than the obvs ones like Leeds or Boro at the moment...

The bitter part of me always seems to dislike the teams in the prem that I consider smaller than us, especially when they are linked with rubbish football. Burnley for instance.

Always seemed to dislike Barca and Celtic too.

Nowadays any team is easy to hate when you are on twitter, the absolute drivel that I read on there is enough to put you off any team

  10. I always used to avoid the middle urinal when younger, in fear.

As I've got older, and more confident (and accepted it is what it is), I just roll up in the middle now. I find if you do that it goes one extreme or the other, you earn the respect and people look at you like a real man or... they think you're a weirdo and whisper behind your back in the bar

  11. Agree with some of the others that said real ale and coffee shops, especially when served in pretentious surroundings, with "experts" in the field...

Things I'd add to the list

Colloseum at Rome... not as good as the one Tunisa which is in a lot better condition and was the one used in gladiator.

And controversially, chocolate brownies. I love anything sweet and chocolate, my teeth are as sweet as can be. But I find them always to be dense or dry and underwhelming.
