Hang on. We did have two poor games where we looked inferior but let’s just remember we probably have the smallest squad in the league have played 3 games in a week and had 3 of our youngest legs crocked in one game.

First half excellent. Second half nervous. Gave the ball away too much but in general moved but the ball faster and looked more threatening all over the pitch. If NML could make better decisions we’d have walked that. At 1-0 they had something to fight for. Dodgy decisions and bookings went against us, could have had a pen.
NML and Rooney worked brilliantly together with Hourihan and Smith adding the 3rd corner to a great triangle on the right
Rooney absolute standout for me. Has to be in the team. He’s a real footballer. Grown up composure that many in the team could learn from.
Tommo did well but needs to pass the ball sooner. Waggy looks real class at this level. More to come from Washington as he gets fitter. Fozzy ? Maestro. Wildsmith - game saver. Nelson, there’s always an error in him but he bossed their No9. Hourihan worked his bits off. Cash was Cash but still needs his top form back. Hope he stays but best of luck if he doesn’t.

Been told to expect minimum 4 in. Mix of loan and permanent. Bird won’t leave, especially now he’s injured but Cashin, if the right bid with good cash up front comes in he will be gone. Any money that comes in from transfers can and will be reinvested back into players

No he is not blameless at all. I blame him totally for rescuing us from oblivion. I blame him for that feeling of walking up the steps seeing the pitch for the first match last season. I blame him for quietly trying to restore the dignity and integrity back to our club. I blame him for trying to run our club responsibly.
I think this thread and its title are disrespectful and ungrateful.

Think people are underestimating how big of a rebuild this is, 2nd season in 3 games in and everyone thinks we should be walking this league, we still can’t spend a penny by the sounds of it, just because we’re a big club doesn’t mean we’ll p*ss the league it took Ipswich a while Bolton stuck still, Sunderland a few years, give it chance and stop just expecting after the sh*te we’ve gone through

Didn't know which of the finger pointing, blaming of who is responsible for three bad games threads to put this. So stuck it in here.
So what do the great and good who post on here want?
For many it looks like the removal of Warne is the favourite option.
So what would need to take place for this to happen.
Clowes sacks Warne. Have the club got the finances to pay off, him and the rest of his management team? If they haven't, I can't see our owner wanting to stump up the cash from his own pocket.
OK, so the club do find the money to pay Warne off. Who comes in as his replacement?
More importantly who is going to identify the right man for the job? Going by the comments of some, we can't leave that task to the person that brought Warne to the club. Maybe as as been suggested, we could appoint a director of football to carry this out. But who should we get as DF and again who is going to identify a suitable candidate?
So what type of manager/coach should we be getting? Another manager that favours a system with 3 centrebacks and hope he can get the players specifically signed for that formation playing better. Or should it be someone who wants to play a flat back four? One that will if there's no more budget or time to bring in new players, have to shoehorn our existing players into roles they don't usually play.
Whatever type of manager we go for, is there any guarantee they can attract a better class of player than we presently can?
Lastly if the new guy isn't working, how long should we wait before starting the whole process again?
Haven't we been on this carousel before and look how that end for us.

I disagree regarding recruiting players last summer, the players needed to be recruited last year to field a team of 18 regardless of manager or the system we were playing.
I think he is recruiting for his system but we've lost our 2 best players from last year in Knight & McGoldrick and we don't have any money to spend to replace them like for like. McGoldrick and Knight in this team, along with the signings we've made this summer, makes us instance contenders for top 2 IMO. I don't think he's happy losing both off these players but he had no choice. I think he needs to be given time/multiple windows to replace them.
Warne has a track record of getting out of League 1. I'm not sure what other expertise tops that.
I agree, the results and performances are crap at the minute but I think he needs time to sort it out and mould his team. We've got a rag tag bunch of players, which we needed to field a team of 18 last season. Most were signed on 2 year deals and will be out of contract at the end of the season. I personally think next summer will be the key transfer window, and hopefully by then, we will be any to spend some small nominal fees, within budget, on players.
If we sack Warne this season, we won't get Simpson or Carsley. We'll be dumpster diving for a Manager out of a job like Darren Moore. Clowes won't make to same mistake spending compo on a manager. But I personally hope he has a tonne more patience then Mad Mel.
I think Warne and the Club have made that classic GSE over-promise by saying we're going for promotion. I'm sure Warne wants that because he's clearly an optimist, but it's clearly created high expectations in the fan base. This team without Knight and McGoldrick never looked like a promotion capable team.
But I completely respect your opinion though, even if I disagree with most of your points. Half full vs half empty glasses and all that.

Looks like things are tuning toxic far quicker than I ever imagined.
I had concerns that if we weren't sat at the top of the table come the end of September. Some fans could become disgruntled.
But attacks after only four games, on the person who is the sole reason why we are still watching Derby playing in the EFL, is beyond belief.
Maybe it would have been best if we had had gone under. Then we could have started at grassroots with a supporters group run club, so the only people we could moan about is ourselves.
I wouldn't consider my self in any way a happy clapping, rose tinted wearing optimistic. Yes I'm not happy with how this season as started but the reaction of some fans is plain crazy.
What I am happy with, is how the club is now being financially run. If this means we can't have a realistic go at getting promoted until we are out from under the heel of the EFL, so be it

Maybe Warne is frustrated because he has targets ready & lined up but needs the money from 2 players who are not willing to commit beyond this season. Warne has always said he wants players that want to be here, not signing a new indicates they dont really.
Maybe the incoming money will be used on players who will have a sell on value, someone like Nombe maybe.
Warne has gone on record as saying he wants players in a decent age bracket as well as wanting pace throughout the team, which is exactly what every fan wants - maybe he just doesnt have enough money to get this without further sales.
On paper, everyone was buzzing with the Bradley signing, I still think he will come good. He missed a lot of games last season and appears to be needing more sharpness. Waggy & Washington both look decent at this level, Wilson has shown promise in spells & is young, majority rate Ward, similar to Bradley I think a lot of fans were happy to bring in Elder too (he wll end up being first choice LB/LWB), Nelson was a bit 50/50.  So for people to not rate Warne's signings I think is unfair, its still early doors to judge them, Warne knows what we need just like every fan, whether we have enough money to do it remains to be seen.

Patience is required. Not mass hysteria. Warne will make changes and perhaps we’ll see a difference. Warne is rightly quick to say we don’t overhype wins nor do we get too despondent after defeat. “ If you can keep your head when all around are losing theirs, and blaming it on you, …”.
4 games in things are wrong with Plan A so we need a Plan B:
    1. Revert to 4 at the back.
    2. Reward the players who’ve played well: therefore Waggy starts as does Thompson.
    3. Focus on the midfield links between defence and attack.
    4. Try something boldly different- Rooney at CDM? Give Brown a berth on the bench; give him 10 minutes.

Compare the difference at 17:05 on Saturday.
As for Mr Clowes, he’ll send a message of support and say if you want to chat you’ve got my number and if Warne rings him, he’ll listen and give his view. Rome wasn’t built in a day and Mr Clowes totally gets that.

The way I see it it's the same as I said last week.
Clowes chose to effectively remove Ros, and give 4 men a 4 year contract so that means he needs to hold his nerve and play the long game. Can we really afford to get rid of PW's whole staff?
Even if that means giving up on promotion for this season, holding tight in league one mid table obscurity and give it a proper go once the full EFL business plan has been achieved.
I think things WILL calm down once the window shuts. Get thru to the international break and continue to work on fitness and patterns of play.
We would not be out of it in 10th in January and COULD make a few more finishers signings like Bolton did last Jan. This would leave us in a better position next season.
I'm not a Season Ticket holder so this sounds depressing for you guys but we need to look at the bigger picture.
Knee jerk sackings R pointless or wishing we'd have kept rozzy now. A lot hated the slow football and were looking to see a change then.
I am still grateful we have a football club and hope DC stays out of the football decisions but together with PW they need to work at changing things to improve results, and perhaps even more team spirit and unity.

emjem reacted to Ambitious in A penny for David Clowes’ thoughts - and what comes next?
I know there are ample threads popping up all relating to a similar topic of discussion, but wanted to air this one out (for my own peace of mind) and gauge what the majority thought.
I had day of mostly driving between meetings today and found myself replaying last night’s disaster in my head. I was driving for over an hour just exhausting my own thoughts and feelings on the game last night, without noticing that I hadn’t even turned the radio on. I honestly couldn’t think of another time a result/performance had such a detrimental impact on my view of the team, club and the way things were being run. Situations around the club, obviously have, but never one performance which made me think what does David Clowes actually make of it all?
By all accounts, he had a vision for Derby County which essentially accumulated to building a successful side on the back of being commercially savvy, recruiting well and while not banging ‘the Derby way’ drum, was definitely hopeful of an aesthetically pleasing football team to watch. We all understood he didn’t have Candy Crush money to burn, as did he, but I think we all hoped that the club would follow in the footsteps of other clubs who have built and not bought by making smart decisions and ultimately working harder than rival sides who share our aspirations.
Last summer was a little bit of a rush job, but all things considered Rosenior (and probably Rooney initially) had done really well to work around our restrictions and build competitive side for the level we were at. The season got off to a steady yet slow start and with Rosenior only hired in an interim basis, I felt (and I imagine the majority) it was only a matter of time before he was hired on an official basis. Clowes, obviously, had other plans and to his credit wanted to do a thorough process and see what was available to him with the vision he had at the club. Warne was his choice and he pointed to his previous promotions at this level as the reason, few could argue against his points and reasoning, but obviously there were some reservations regarding his playing style, his previous relegations and how he would handle the move away from Rotherham above all else.
Needless to say we saw a fairly quick change in our approach and we were moving the ball a lot faster down the pitch and having less possession. We then went on a little bit of a purple patch (20 unbeaten) but I felt just before we actually finally lost that we had seen performances slip and when we finally lost it was hard for us to get back on track. We had completely transitioned by that point into a more Warne set-up with 3 at the back a lot of the time over the final quarter of the season. Obviously, how we have started this season needs no further explanation otherwise this thread wouldn’t be a thing.
On to the recruitment, namely Mark Thomas, who came in from Oxford following praise for his good work there. We were obviously looking for someone with a little bit of knowledge of our level and below, in my opinion, who had shown a competence in recruiting cheap(er) players who had potential to grow with the team. The summer recruitment, at least at this snapshot in time, looks a bit of a disaster. If you asked me who our best signing was from this summer based on minutes played, it would undoubtedly be Waghorn - a player invited to train with the club on nothing more than the proximity of his home. Not a player we scoped out, not a player we headhunted - a player who could probably peddle a bike into training should he so wish.
We have had Paul Warne explain what he’s teams are all about: the high relentless press, the high energy, speed… the recruitment doesn’t mirror that in the slightest. We’ve signed players who fans would’ve heard of, out-of-contract from Championship clubs (for the most part) and above all else - experienced. The budget has been bemoaned but we have recruited in a far different fashion to every other League One club because no other League One club can afford to go and sign players who are accustom to Championship wages. You have to then think to the likes of Sonny Bradley who has had an horrendous start and been dragged off at half-time twice in four games. Both Warne and Thomas would’ve been banging Clowes’ table for him and saying how this is the guy who can lead this defence back into the Championship. Obviously the due diligence hadn’t been done because now it’s coming to light that he’s not looked remotely similar to the player he was since his injury - which is probably the player we’re watching now.
It brings me back to my point: What on earth must Clowes be thinking? He’s given Warne and his staff the keys to the castle based on what he told him and now four games in the whole thing looks like a dog’s dinner - substantially worse than where we were 12 months ago under Rosenior. A decision, I’m absolutely sure, he would reverse if given the opportunity to replay it again. He now has to consider the direction of the club and importantly how to direct it again in a progressive direction. I don’t believe Clowes is someone who is going to drop a guy with 3 years left on his contract without substantial reason so I question what comes next - does he refresh the recruitment of the club? Does he try and have some influence over the football operation of the club - perhaps even hire a director of football to steer the direction for him as he has seen how even the best laid plans can capitulate when decisions aren’t aligned, i.e. playing recruitment and playing style.
I feel for the bloke because ultimately the weight is heavy on his shoulders and the club is a pressure cooker at the moment.

I read a couple of headlines from Derbyshire Live this morning:
"Nigel Clough wades in on Derby County struggles ahead of Crunch Clash"
"David Clowes sent Derby County transfer message by 'uber-paranoid' Paul Warne"
These are just sensationalist headlines for what purpose? Nigel Clough certainly didn't "wade" in and I am sure Paul Warne speaks with David Clowes on an almost daily basis and he is fully aware of Derby's requirements in the transfer window.
Although in my 70s, I do try to keep up with technology as far as I can. I can't help but think that we are starting to live in a pretty toxic society, where many people want to voice their opinions about all sorts of topics and people on the Social Media. I have no problem with that per se, provided the opinions are based on fact or reasonable assumptions. I have no time for people who just seek sensationalism, winding people up or make hurtful, personal comments about others. I am happy for criticism of actual behaviour but not personal character assassination. Just imagine how you would feel if it was you who was the subject of these comments. You don't know the effect such comments can have on people -suicide, mental health issues or maybe just want a transfer away!
This Forum has voiced a few of those after the first couple of games of the season. There should be criticism of the team's and  individual's performances but please let's avoid personal, sensitive comments especially when these cannot be backed up with hard facts.
"Kane Wilson couldn't cross a road"  "scariest thing is we have bought two central defender who can't play football" "I guarantee Waghorn would have missed Wigan's first goal" "can stick his f****** why all up his arse" "Bird is more sparrow than golden eagle. An exhibition player not willing to break sweat. I'll drive him to Hull myself" "We've got a pub team manager in charge of a jugganaught" "Bradley has the mobility of a superglued traffic cone"
These were from just 2 posts on the Forum.
I'm not a prude but can we just think about what we are writing about and to other individuals. Hopefully, we all want all our players and staff to bring success to the Club - so lets show our support.

I like Paul Warne and his staff, as people.

From what I can tell, they're a decent, honest and principled bunch.

I believe that's what attracted David Clowes to them in the first instance, alongside their record of success in League One.

I'll also add that they saw those principles reflected in David Clowes, hence their decision to come on board.

From the start it was referenced by all parties the entire ethos of the club needed changing, and rebuilding work was needed from top to bottom, which is not the work of a moment, or indeed a few months.

The backroom staff had been hollowed out to the bare minimum, across multiple departments.

A review of the remaining staff saw several leave, and a new round of recruitment has taken place, building the club back up to operating strength across the board, from the casual staff, offices and the football support and academy roles, a process that is still ongoing.

That's not a normal issue that an incoming manager has to grapple with, rebuilding the back room to what it should be, while ensuring his requirements are met. We've seen a level of churn across the Academy management in that time, which must have demanded Warnes attention at various stages, in addition to the normal commitments management brings.

We've an owner learning about operating a football club, having taken over in sheer desperation, leaning on the manager he's appointed I presume, there seems to be no other football experts within his team we know of.

None of this is normal for a first team football manager, especially in his first job away from a much smaller club with different expectations, so mistakes and stumbles will inevitably happen.

We got close enough last season that there were few grumbles about his position, yet after only two games, one in the league, there's a sizable minority calling for change, and a notable shift in how he's perceived.

I'm not a natural defender of Warne, but will stand up for his work so far.

I'm a self confessed football snob, and don't see him as the man to lead us back to the promised land of the Premier League, probably based around pre conceptions of his football philosophy rather than any evidence, but he's Clowes choice to launch that journey, and some of the criticism on here recently is well out of kilter with the job he's done so far.

Disagree. This is of course just my opinion, but there are stats to back this up so it’s somewhat based on fact.
NML, Hourihane, Barkhuizen, Sibley, Collins, Washington, Bird, Ward have all shown themselves capable of scoring goals at this level.
Ward, Wilson, Elder, Hourihane, NML, Barkhuizen, Sibley, Bird have all shown themselves capable of assisting goals at this level.
We’re carrying a better threat from set pieces, be that corners or indirect/direct freekicks. So if a goal from open play isn’t likely due to teams sitting in we can lump corners in towards Nelson and Bradley.

The squad has options in terms of how we could play, yes Warne has shown a preference for a back 3, but we have the options (especially if we do add a couple more) to play 3-5-2, 3-4-3, 3-4-2-1, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1 etc etc.
I know it’s all opinions but I really don’t get how some fans are so down on the season before it’s started. We’ve got a better balance, which has helped provide better depth, there’s some viable options in the u21s which should help with rest and rotation at times, the peak age of the squad as been improved. Yes a couple of very talented individuals have moved on, but we’ve got a squad of committed players all working towards a shared goal….plenty to be optimistic about for me

Another thing worth bearing in mind with Rhodes, focusing purely on the past 5 years on all players that played more than 800 minutes.
22/23 - Best goal rate of Huddersfield's side in the Championship - 290 minutes per goal
21/22 - Best goal rate of Huddersfield's side in the Championship - 241 minutes per goal
20/21 - Best goal rate of Sheff Wed's side in the Championship - 212 minutes per goal
19/20 - Third best goal rate of Sheff Wed's side in the Championship - 228 minutes per goal
18/19 - Third best goal rate of Norwich's side in the Championship  - 168 minutes per goal
So he's had the best minutes per goal ratio for his side in the last three seasons. When you compare to the top League One goalscorers and how they did in the Championship:
McGoldrick - scored a goal every 485 minutes in the Championship in 21/22. A goal every 126 minutes for us in League One.
Clarke-Harris - scored a goal every 250 minutes in the Championship in 21/22. A goal every 154 minutes in League One last season.
Chaplin - scored a goal every 534 minutes in the Championship in 20/21. A goal every 129 minutes in League One last season.
Michael Smith - scored a goal every 314 minutes in the Championship in 20/21. A goal every 182 minutes in League One last season.
Bishop - never played higher than League One - career average is a goal every 259 minutes.
So I would argue that his ability to put the ball in the goal has been restricted by A) situation - he's still been more prolific than any other player in his sides in the last three years and B) minutes on the pitch. He's largely been injury free the last three seasons which is a big plus.
He's a player that needs to supported, but I'm fairly positive he scores a good amount of goals at this level in this Derby team. If he gets the opportunity to get a run of games on the pitch then all the better. He started 15 games for Huddersfield last season, 10 of his 34 appearances were less than 15 minutes long.
The drop in quality from Championship to League One is significant - I would back Rhodes (given the opportunities and games) to easily break the 20 goal mark next season based on his track record, not just over his career but also over the past five years.
