I don't really understand what a lot of these changes are for. Well, I do. It is in the hope that the books can still sell by the millions and stand no chance of offending anyone. We are sanitising above and beyond what is sane.
I read my 3 year old the Funnybones pet shop book the other week. Throughout that book the parrot throws out insults, "big bum, baldy, four eyes" and such. My son thought these were hilarious. But he also knows it isn't nice to go around insulting people.
And when the time comes and we read the Dahl stories,in their original form, I am of no doubt he would also find it hilarious. But he would easily understand that some of that is not kind to say.
There is a thread in the football side of this forum about swearing in a family stand. The common sense answer seems to be, you can't stop it, but you can explain and teach children that the language they may hear isn't appropriate and not to be repeated.
How many children of an age that could read these stories are gaming online with strangers and encounting completely unfiltered conversations. How many play games such as Call of Duty or GTA? How many listen to music that is far more offensive than Dahl could ever be.
On the most part, children love the gruesome stories, they love the descriptions. Most today are influenced by youtubers or other online people, not stories from books, so I am sure making stories even more safe and sterile is going to change that...

How long until enormous becomes deemed offensive? Unless we decide we scrap adjectives for people.
As someone rather gangly,  I don't like being referred to as thin! Thin as a wire is too much.
Why not just leave these as they are, encourage some actual parenting and use the books as a discussion point if you feel it needs it.

Not sure you can judge anything based on tonight. I think our players approached it the same way the manager did, give it a go but the league is our focus.
It was flat. I never sensed we believed we would win, total contrast to the league. We didn't disgrace ourselves, just didn't do ourselves justice.

Stick Antonio upfront for us and the whole game turns. Sadly we have Collins...
That is the difference. I don't see any need for the itv West Ham love in. I mean, telling us to be more conservative, when 1-0 down in a cup tie...

As a parent of a 3y boy and 11 month old girl, I do have concerns about what we are expecting young minds to handle. As a society we seem to be rushing our way through life and we expect kids to be grown up far younger than my generation.
At primary school age they are impressionable, do we really need to be giving potential to 10-11 year olds questioning their own sexuality? They love to give the impression that they are grown up and there is a huge variation in maturity levels.  It concerns me the state of our nations mental health. Pretty sure yo yos were in trend again when I was in y6! I never really liked them so I felt a bit left out. On the flip side,  young children are far more accepting of differences and maybe in the long run it is what needs to be done.
When I started secondary school in 99, we didn't have a uniform. The way you dressed was part of your identity. But these were all things that could easily change. Me spending my school years in various band t-shirts, didn't say anything other than the music I liked. Would I have felt a different pressure if I felt I needed to identify as something other than the shirt on my back? When I started that school, the perceived gay in school was a figure of fun. By my last year in 6th form, no one cared about that anymore, several openly.
Social media promotes this notion of ideals. How you must look, how you should feel. A view of how much fun everyone else is having. And the vast majority is a facade.
Maybe I am just out of touch believing that we should be encouraging our children to embrace what they do have. See the good in who you are. You only get so many years to be a child, it shouldn't be spent with pressures.
And all that before we get to these kids are growing up with the planet fecked and the country in shambles.
I have probably phrased my thoughts badly, but I feel we are making life very tough and confusing for the children of today, when really it should be the time you treasure most.
I guess we will only know if it is the right path when they reach our age!

What these stats can never take into consideration is the human nature of it all. Has that chance fallen to an inform or out of form striker? Does this chance go up if playing against a former club? If you miss many chances, the pressure can build as the game goes on. Does that chance later on get the same rating, even though it is more pressured?

We are now a team not afraid of the fight. Something that has alluded us for a long time.
I felt and believed there was an arrogance about our club under Mel. It translated in to how we played, almost felt we believed the ugly stuff was beneath us.
Anyway, back to Hourihane. Knight has freed him. An excellent midfield combo. All of our midfield are too good for this league but the great thing is, you don't see an arrogance. You see a determination to win.

I saw a recent opposition manager said his team were out fought by us. How often has that been said about us over the last 5 years or so?
Another plus, we are actually using Bird, Knight and Sibley in a way that seems to be getting the best out of them.
Isn't it refreshing to see us actually play in a way which isn't stuck in the same gear. I think Warne tried to force his tried and tested on the squad with his wing backs, he wasn't stubborn. An adaptable manager!
The players believe in him, the owner believes in him, about time we all did and start looking forward.

The way that we have become a country of hysterics, reacting to anything with fits of rage, panic or over the top melodrama. Everything is an extreme now, nobody will, or is allowed to, change their minds without being criticised. It's making life impossible. It's what has ruined politics - there is no compromise allowed.
