Woodley Ram
I have to admit this was going through my mind, how do we get Rooney in the side and keep thr Knight, shiniesta partnership, I guess the only way is to play 4 at the back instead of 5? Other things have changed too - most obviously the return of Waghorn and Lawrence. Agree though - Knight and Shinnie should be the pairing for the foreseeable future. It’s just gives us that platform to build from ... which is needed in this league

I suspect that Rooney has been a key “advisor” if you get my drift. To which you added, that he is learning on the hoof about the realities of the championship guided by Rooney(?). Well? Rooney can’t run. Rooney is not industrious. But Rooney can pass. So if Rooney has any value, it’s as part of a team that passes. Cocu wants them to pass, but he was critical of the tame backwards passing and the lack of movement, that bored everyone shitless. I understand that certain senior players aren’t so comfortable with the ball and Marshall’s kicking is a bit hit and miss but ultimately it will be a passing team that triumphs over a less technical team. (reference Fulham v rowett’s Derby) I actually agree with this stuff above @RamNut. As a player myself I loved passing and knitting movement and passing. But the point I was making is about Shinnie and the need to have a “destroyer” in midfield with allusions to Cocu’s first appraisals of Shinnie and his need to “play in a different way”. I’m not sure exactly what he said to Shinnie but I think it was some tweaks to help him become a better player. https://www.dcfc.co.uk/news/2019/10/cocu-labels-shinnie-as-fantastic-professional-after-making-league-bow

Comrade 86
Love the pair of them. With Rooney, ibe, Joz in we have a deal more quality about us and in some key positions too but in this league, you need a scrapper or two in the side. My greatest criticism of the side recently has not been Cocu, nor really individual performances, it's been that we seem to have a bit of a soft centre. Knight and Shinnie have been the shining lights in recent games, popping up all over the pitch and fighting for everything. I can put up with poor results if I think the teams is giving of their best and in that regard, I feel we're starting to turn the corner. Certainly the understandable concern over Martin's departure with no replacement worries me less after yesterday's performance. I think there are plenty of goals in this team and I think where there are multiple goal threats, the cloggers will find it harder to address than when all they need do is kick Sibbo from pillar to post. derbydaz22
Knight is the 1st name on the team sheet at the moment and that was Shinnie’s best game in a Derby shirt. They give us legs and they deserve a run as our midfield two on last nights display.

Especially in this formation, with three CB’s behind, you need to be brave and select more attacking central midfielders. Hopefully Cocu realises his error now and doesn’t play 2 CDM’s in that formation again. I think this is the key. When you play this formation you HAVE to have 2 high energy players in the middle. Knight and Shinnie all the way as long as we play 3 at the back.

England Ram
The way to get Sibo or Bird (or Rooney if that floats your boat) is to play 4 at the back. With two more mobile ‘defensive’ mids this is possible. This allows you much more of an attacking threat as well. Marshall Byrne. Davis/Te Werk. Clarke. Buchanan Shinnie/Bird Knight/Bilek Josviak/? Sibley/Rooney Lawrence/Ibe Waghorn/?

Lawrence, Joswiak, Sibley, Ibe Could be those 4. Waghorn up top with CKR there as a short term back up. Midfield 2 chosen from Shinnie, Knight, Holmes and Bird. I think the long term aim of Cocu is to move to 433 with a holding midfielder comfortable dropping into a back 3 to allow for wingbacks to power on forwards. He has the perfect player for this in Bielik. On current form & imagining every player is match fit my starting eleven would be: Marshall Byrne Davies Clarke Buchanan Bielik Knight Shinnie Lawrence Joswiak Waghorn With suns of: Roos, Wisdom, Evans, Bird, Sibley, Ibe, CKR. Rooney is an amazing talent but I think we lose mobility, energy and tenacity in the middle if he replaces one of those.

I am not sure about a pairing of Clarke and Curtis in a back 4, lacks pace. In a few weeks PC is going to have some very difficult choices to make, including whether Rooney deserves a first team spot. I agree with you that he wouldn’t be in my starting Xi ? I don’t think it’s an obvious position but do I think Sibley could come in and do the Joswiak or Lawrence role? Having seen them both spend significant periods of time when we’re in position centrally then yeah I think he could take one of the attacking roles.
