Best Foreign XI Challenge

I saw this on social media and so thought I’d give it a go. You have to pick your all time best Derby team, but you are only allowed to pick ONE player per country. You have to have seen the player play. Here’s my quick effort!

GK: Poom (Estonia)

DF: Laursen (Den)  McGrath (Ire) Carbonari (Arg) Powell (Eng)

MF: McMinn (Sco) Asanovic (Croatia) Van Der Laan (Dutch) Eranio (Italy)

Att: Saunders (Welsh) Wanchope (Costa Rica).

Its harder than you think!

GK: Poom (Est)

DF: Holmes ( USA)  / Moore (Jamaica) Carbonari (Arg) / Craig Forsyth (Sco)

MF: Hendrick (Ire) / Eranio (Ita) / Mount (Eng)

AT: Wilson (Wales) / Rasiak (Pol) / Wanchope ( Costa Rica)

Plenty of 5-4 wins with that team

It was a tough call. Asanovic is quite possibly the best player I’ve ever seen in a Derby shirt though. I know it was only for one season, but he was outstanding. A better player than Stimac for me, although I loved Igor.

I excluded home nations and Ireland and also players who weren't really foreign, but used the granddad rule to play internationally.

I was tempted to go with classic 2-3-5, but changed to more realistic one... Only a slightly more realistic though.

                Poom

    Stimac West Carbonari

       Carsley Hughes

 Eranio    Vydra     Wilson

      Wanchope Martin

Chrissy McMartin is about as Scottish as one can be, right?

This is ageist against my generation, we ain’t seen nothing but Scots since 2000. Our last foreign scout probably resigned in 1998

You could go for something like this...

Within the last 5 years:
Roos
Baird  Keogh  Bielik  Olsson
Wilson  Holmes  Mascarell  Weimann
Martin  Vydra

Since 2000:
Poom
Laursen  Carbonari  West  Higginbotham*
Wilson  Kinkladze  Idiakez  Reich
Martin  Strupar

*Played for Gibraltar

Brad Jones (AUS)

Isak Ssewankambo (SWE)

Claude Davis (JAM)

Martin Albrechtsen (DEN)

Jay McEveley (SCO)

Andrejs Pereplotkins (LAT)

Connor Doyle (USA)

Blessing Kaku (NIG)

Laurent Robert (FRA)

Gianfanco Labarthe Tomé (PER)

Dean Moxey (ENG)

Going with a diamond here. With Kaku protecting the back four, Doyle can really express himself behind the dynamic front two of Moxey and Labarthe Tome. The combination of Peruvian flair and Devonshire grit up front will be a lot of opposition defences to handle, especially with McEveley overlapping Robert down the left flank.
