Middlesborough agree a fee of £3m with Birmingham for Ryan Shotton. Deal expected to complete in next 48hrs,

I need a lie down.

Hope we get a sell on fee.  Not sure if the price or the fact Boro who are "going to smash the league" think he can add anything bemused me most.

Saw that Spurs are about to sign a player for near £42m, 12 months after Ajax bought him for £3.8m.

The PL riches have allowed for lazy scouting. There is no need to scout across Europe for the best talents anymore. Just wait until one player reaches the required level and blow them out the water with a ridiculous bid.

It's hard to be critical of Spurs here. I don't think it's a panic buy. It's just a reflection of the current market.

They have been so shrewd in the transfer market and picked up so many bargains over the years - Alli for £5 million, Eriksen for £11 million, Dier for £4 million, Alderweireld for £11.5 million, Lloris for £12 million, Wanyama for £12 million being prime examples - that you can forgive them for having the occasional splurge.

Their track record of developing players is excellent, so who would bet against them nurturing Sanchez into one of the best defenders in the Premier League?

A deal rising to £42 million for a 21-year-old with less than 100 senior appearances and ostensibly just one notable year in his career seems questionable, but they are not paying for the player he is now, they are paying for potential. And obviously the impression he made at Ajax suggests that his potential is massive.

When you consider that typically a centre back doesn't peak until 26-27 and can sustain that level well into his thirties, Sanchez is only going to get better and better. One of two things will happen - he will be at Spurs for years and become a mainstay of the side, or much like Modric, Bale and Walker before him, be sold for a considerable profit. It's very rare that Spurs get it wrong.

If Vertonghen or Alderweireld were to be sold or suffer serious injury, it's sensible to have such a player in the ranks.
