George Thorne

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is keeping a close watch on Derby midfielder George Thorne.

The Spaniard sees Thorne as an ideal long-term replacement for Gareth Barry and will continue to monitor the player’s progress in the East Midlands.

Everton are one of four Premier League clubs tracking the 22-year-old, including Norwich, Crystal Palace and Newcastle, where his former Derby gaffer Steve McClaren is now in charge.

McClaren took the former England youth international to the iPRO Stadium 18 months ago for around £2.5million after he shone on a six-month loan spell from West Brom.

Thorne’s progress has stalled through a series of injuries, sustained over a couple of seasons.

This season, however, he has come back much stronger and his form has earned him a string of admirers.

And so it begins...

Everton is a bit of a strange one though. They've got Besic and Gibson as alternatives, and they'll no doubt eye another one in the summer and would find better value from abroad.

He does play a very similar role though. Dropping between the CBs in possession.

It's only linked reports anyway. I'm sure half the Premier League are monitoring a couple of our players.

It would take an eight-figure fee for us to sell Thorne. Nobody will offer that much, not until he's had a season in the Premier League and stayed clear of injury for a while.

Only a matter of time before our players are linked to higher clubs, if they weren't then we wouldn't be doing well.

I trust Mel and Sam to not sell one of our best players halfway through the season though.

Especially not to that **** McClaran.

inevitable noise about GT - and if Will H was fit - his name would be banded about as well - both the right age profile and our two best players (McClaren would love both of them!)

can't see him leaving in January - GT wants and will play in the premiership  - hopefully with us......

The fact that he dropped from the Premier league to play for us, then spoke of his relief that he was injured here, rather than at West Brom suggests he won't have his head turned easily.

They should try Eustace instead.
