Ramifications reacted to Ghost of Clough in Derby County v Exeter City Tuesday 25 October
And this is the main problem. We hired the wrong manager as this squad is not suited to Warne's system. We had it before when we went from McClaren's attacking football, to Clement's possession based system, to Pearson's 442, to Rowett's defensive style, to Lampard's attacking football.
Every manager needed an overhaul of the squad which cost us in several ways.
Poorer finishing position - with squads adapting to new teammates and new styles of play An inflated wage bill - due to struggling to get rid of players not suited to the new style Lack of development of academy graduates - due to bloated squads Under Rosenior, we were outside of the playoffs on goal difference. It was clear we only needed 2 more players to make it work (RB and LW). Yet here we are, now probably 7 players shy of a squad Warne would like. Every week we're slowly drifting further away from the playoffs.
Rosenior also has the 2nd best win record and highest equivalent points per game record in our club's history. Only Ted Magner having a better record (excluding caretakers for 2 games or less).
Harsh on Walker, who must be doing something right as Warne has kept him on in the first team staff. Why does being a former academy coach mean he can't be a good first team coach? Jody Morris had an identical role at Chelsea to Walker, but the consensus being he was a good assistant for us. Brendan Rogers was Chelsea reserves manager, yet has gone on to win promotion to the PL with Swansea, won numerous titles in Scotland and won two titles with Leicester. Kieran McKenna was an U18 coach and Spurs and Man Utd before becoming Ipswich manager. There are doubles other examples out there.
Buxton was a temporary assistant until a decision was made on who the permanent manager was. A more attack minded assistant was needed, much like McClaren needed Simpson to offer balance.

I never had an opinion on Warne's style of play bar him asking players to get the ball forward quicker, less sideways passing. I hate 3/5 at the back and hoped he'd see we don't have the players for it. Some of his decisions have been 'odd' and his comments about the players a bit 'off' for saying he picks them and sets them up.

RoyMac5 seems to have changed his opinion on Mr Warne's style of play somewhat. ?

Going back to that first half against Charlton, I really had hope for this season. We lost the game but we looked class. We looked a team that could achieve something. A cut above the rest. Sadly that hope has disappeared. It was a crazy decision to dispense of Rosenior but I remember a post on here saying he was wanting a bigger salary so it may not even be a straightforward football decision.
We definitely need a strong tackling, ball winning midfield player. Someone like Grahame Shinnie as also previously mentioned.
I miss those players from last season, Shinnie, Tom Lawrence, Jags, Ravel, Festy. Even Plange and Colin.

I have been watching Louise Sibley play for 4 years or so now. At no point whatsoever did I think, “you know what, he’d make a really good left back”. Completely baffling decision. He could have made a like for like swap with Stearman but instead moved 4 players around. On reflection however I have decided that the fault for our current predicament lies squarely at the door of Byrne and Buchanan. Tossers.

Why did he not give Rosenior any time given that he recruited this entire squad?
Call it what it is, short termism. He got the job based on short-sightedness and that's the metric he lives and dies by.
We need to get on our knees and beg Rosenior to come back

Our first half against Charlton was brilliant apart from the fact we missed chances I'd love to see that football again!!!

I’m obviously not calling for Warne to go but I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t cheer me up if Clowes went back to Rosenier with his cap in hand.
The difference between the two is that if we drew/lost under LR, there was a genuine impression we made chances and the team was going somewhere. Even if we win tonight it feels as if we’ll just be papering over the cracks of a dysfunctional team/system.
Attendances and intrigue in Derby will drop off a cliff if this lasts much longer. Can’t expect people to pay good money to watch this drivel.

With the possible exception of the Chelsea 3-1 League Cup victory the greatest night of football i have seen for Derby at home.
Bill Shankly said, the first half performance was the best he had ever seen by an English Club.
Stood in the Normanton End (rare for us ) with my late old man.
The night is just unforgettable for anyone who witnessed it.

That last sentence sums up the c*** up of taking on Hoofball football Warne, giving him time to build a side would mean bringing in different players over a couple of transfer windows. Lets also remember, we are on a 2 year EFL business plan and can't buy players. Why would you let an interim manager bring in players for his possession style football then bin him after 9 games and bring in Mr Hoofball football manager and give him a 4 year contract to boot. If someone at the club persuaded Clowes that Rosenior was'nt the right man for the job, why bring in a manager that does'nt have the right squad players to change to a style that never succeeds in Championship or above. Lets not forget Rotherham, under Warne got relegated twice from the championship.

And if you asked people outside of a matchday thread where things are a bit calmer whether they want Warne sacked then I reckon the vast vast majority would say no, of course not.
I’m more than happy to give him time and support but I don’t see why we need to mitigate any poor performances under him any more than we did Rosenior. Man City under 9’s beat us convincingly at home, it’s going to attract some criticism just like Friday night should where we didn’t lay a glove on a team who’d just been beaten at home by Lincoln. But it doesn’t mean he’s under pressure, I’m confident he’ll be given time, as he should.
The system he wants to play doesn’t suit a few of our players, it’s not his fault but some flexibility would be nice.

Amazing how the tippy-tappy around the back was able to beat West Brom (with the reserves no less) Oxford, Peterborough, Barnsley and Wycombe.

Those of us daring to criticise Warne's style are met with the retort "well it's better than Rosenior's pass along the back football".
Why is it so black and white? (Pardon the pun).
Isn't there a third way?
Still playing possession football, along the ground, but moving the ball forwards and much more quickly?

Oh mr warne, you’ll see we’re torn
(and some are getting quite forlorn)
Smith, Hourihane and Bird have class
and Didzy, he just loves to pass
So get the best out of our roster,
don't come in like some imposter
hoofing balls north, east, south, west
let’s see our squad play at its best
The fans deserve a fine display
of skills at pride park - and away
they’re honest and deserving folk
please please don’t make us play like Stoke
So here’s the rub: a manager should
work out what each player could
deliver, if he’s at his best
... then make it happen. That’s the test

For me the issue is if LR was never the long term plan it didn't make much sense to let him recruit the players he did in the summer. They don't really fit Warne's style or preferred formation, and for all the talk that they were just short-term, get-whoever-we-can signings, I don't think that's right. Hourihane, NML, Barkhuizen, McGoldrick are all fairly big names for League One and are on multi-year contracts. Neither is it a given we will be able to sell whoever we want, and even if we do Warne will still be operating under major restrictions as to who he can bring in.
It would have made more sense to bring Warne in before we committed a significant amount of wages to the players we got. Or alternatively to have looked at a manager who suited the squad a bit more. It is just a very odd time to bring in a manager who will need to rip up the (newly assembled) squad, when he won't be able to do any serious business until next summer and even then will have limited room for manoeuvre.
Personally my hope is that Warne is flexible enough to work with what he has. I don't think it has to be black and white: ie we can still be a more physical and direct side, but maybe in a different formation that better suits our better players. Warne might have to compromise a little; if he's as good a manager as people say, he must know that's the right thing to do.
(Pearson of course didn't want to give an inch.)

Seems like we spent the better part of a decade playing a possession based passing game. Built out academy based on it. My personal thoughts are it was a huge mistake getting rid of LR. We've gambled in an effort to get promoted to the champ. We've not got the players for it, certainly not athletes that PW wants. There will be lots of Injuries playing this style.
It's more exciting and chaotic this way but the purist in me is screaming. Once the adrenaline wears away, it feels like we've got back 20 years. I do hope I'm wrong though. Very happy to be wrong. Needed evolution, not revolution.

Ramifications reacted to Truckle in Is Paul Warne the next Nigel Pearson?
I think getting rid of Liam was a mistake that could haunt us for years. When he went we had the joint best home results in the league. Can’t really do better than that. Our away results were bad but our away form was generally pretty good. Four away games is a crazily small sample size on which to base a season defining decision. If you just look at the stats for away games under Liam we averaged 13 shots a game with 4.75 on target, under Warne it is 8.25 with 3 on target. Admittedly it is still a ridiculously small sample size but there are also examples that come to mind. Just before half time against Oxford, Collins chases down a defender forces a mistake and hits the post. At exactly the same point in the match against Cambridge he does the same and scores. That’s going to even out over a season.
So we lost a guy who had built a team to play in his style and brought in one who wants to play in a way entirely unsuited to the players he has.
I think the reason Clowes pulled the trigger is that he was thinking like a fan, there’s a bit more about that here if you can be arsed.
