    Here’s the plan….
Imagine the pitch divided up lengthways into 5 strips….
    1 2 3 2 1 with 3 centrally being the widest one.
You don’t want players in the same strips occupying the same lines.
He is asking his CB to play a little more narrow than the conventional set up for playing out from the back where the CBs split and leave themselves exposed on turn over. So the CBs come short in zone 3 drawing forwards in for a press.

The CMs then split and drop deeper but in zone (line) 2 and the FBs push on very high in zone (line) 1.
The 10 now drops into spaces left in zone 3 and the 11 and the 7 come inside and play in zone (line) 2 and get closer to the CF.
    Almost like this :-
                         1
                   5.         6.
          4.                            8.
                         10.
    2.                                       3.
                7.               11.
                          9.

The aim is to give width with the full backs and an overload with the 4, 8, 10, 7 and 11 in central areas but also to provide defensive strength centrally on the turn over. It’s an alternative or an evolution of Peps inverted full backs.
One of the problems we had yesterday with this working was the 7 and 11. Joz and Watson. Joz wants to play more as an orthodox winger and stays too wide and he blocks off the areas we wanted to expose for Byrne to get forward. Watson did similar and never quite got into the game enough to enable us to retain possession and get close to CKR. The only real time it worked was for Birds through ball where’s Watson's movement inside was timed perfectly.
It’s why Sibley looked more effective as he is happier playing in those inside areas, getting in good areas and also stretching the game giving centre backs more to think about allowing CKR more space.
Ebosele didn’t do it as effectively on the other side and my feelings on Festy are that he is going to suit the system far better coming from the full back position working in line 1 than he will as the 7 or 11 and being asked to play in the pockets.

Morrison will also suit this system however the jury for me is out on how effective he’ll be and whether he will do the required work out of possession or whether he will change history and perform for longer periods of fine now he has secured a contract.
In summary, at the moment, Joz may well suit a role from the bench and exploiting tired legs and stretching teams. My front three midfield players would be Morrison / Sibley / Lawrence in any rotation. Watson for me may well be better suited to the Bird role and I see him as his back up ahead of Thompson and the reason Carrol isn’t really needed.

Yet Sibley is? The ref chickened out of awarding a penalty when he was through in the box, their defender clearly 'pushed' him.

Game changer? How so, he didn't score. The pattern of play changed from the first half but we didn't score. You seem a bit blinkered in your rating?

Whilst everyone seems to agree he didn't have a good game, throughout lots of the match he was left one on one with their most dangerous player.

Personally felt Hutchinson was better at Salford than Watson was at Notts on the left wing. Although Sibley probably offers more than both at this moment in time. Other than that that’s not a bad 11 and honestly that bench isn’t as weak as many will make out.

With that line up, how can the bench be a real problem? If we start as above the bench would most likely feature :-
Forsyth - Over 200 Championship appearances, over 300 professional games and 4 international caps!
Cashin - Most felt relieved and reassured after his performance last week and while I don’t think he has 46 games in him id be more than comfortable with him coming off the bench if there are injuries.
Watson - Many on here would have him starting and have ridiculously high hopes for him
Thompson - was excellent last week v Notts County and Rooney has spoken highly of him. More than capable for short periods.
Hutchinson - played the most minutes of all the young players pre season and played left wing, right wing, rotated into the 10 v Salford and sat deep centrally v Notts and did well in each. He also has 50 EFL games under his belt
Festy - changed the dynamic completely when moved further forward v Notts and won us the penalty. Can also play left back and right back and again many on here would be happy to see him start.
CKR - Our main striker and almost talismanic leader. Over 500 senior appearances in 7 different countries and nearly 100 senior goals and played in the top division in at least 3 countries inc the Prem!! Hardly a bad one to have to bring on!
Personally I wouldn’t pick your starting line up but if we did I really wouldn’t worry about the bench!!

Indeed. Harry Kane was very ordinary when on loan at various clubs throughout the League pyramid for example.
We've also had players here on loan who struggled but went on to have some success at Prem level  (Michael Keane, Lingard, Livermore, Danny Graham)

I agree with much of what you have said here, which is why loans at a lower level aren't always the best indication of what a player is capable of.
In defence of Lampard though, he was quite good at bringing through the youth, unfortunately not ours! ?

Assuming we can’t sign anyone in time for Saturday and assuming we don’t want to ‘cap’ too many other players meaning we can sign less players once in a position to do so (Cashin may be a necessity) and assuming Buchanan is injured, I’d go with this :-
                          Roos
    Byrne.   Cashin.   Forsyth.   Ebosele.
               Shinnie.         Bird.
      Joz.      Lawrence.    Hutchinson / Sibley.
                           CKR.

The strange thing is he’s played the most minutes (level with Ebosele) of all the youngsters pre season and is the only midfield player to have looked like scoring (bird v Betis excepted as I mean from the attacking players). His shot from 25 yds caught the eye but his other effort in the second half was far more dangerous and better technique.
Thompson has caught my eye with his simplicity more than anything else. Someone mentioned Gilmouresqe and I couldn’t disagree with that.
Festy will always catch the eye with his hustle and bustle and pace always looks dangerous but he’s very hit and miss. Saturday first half he won NC three goal kicks in a row with poor touch or end product.
Cashin did very well Saturday but a Championship CF will be a different kettle of fish physically and technically and will relish playing against inexperience.
Williams will dip in and out of squads but I don’t expect this season to be a breakthrough more one of regular 23s and regular contact with first team Monday to Friday.

I think most of us do but, sadly, it only takes a handful of noisy folk to express their frustration to make it sound like a lot.
A few things are certain: Regardless of the result, regardless of the performance, I will not be booing the team, Mel or Rooney. I won’t join in any “witty” songs about Rooney and I won’t be leaving early. I rather suspect (and hope) the majority will react the same.
That doesn’t make me a better fan (I’ll do plenty of grumbling and moaning to myself) or mean I don’t blame Mel or that I rate Rooney but I’ll do my best to support the team and accept the fact that Rooney is doing the best he is capable of and Mel is doing his best to sell the club.
