I remember it seemed that Warne was at Brentford v Wolves and he said there’s a striker he was also looking at in that game. He also said that there’s a premier league player that can be released once that team sign a replacement. It seems like it would be Nathan Fraser from wolves and wolves are close to signing to signing a striker from Brazil. Wonder if this is one that could potentially happen.

Think Fraser was definitely the man.

Sounds promising that Wolves have nearly got their man, so we should have heard a rumour or too by tomorrow morning.

    Michael Smith “all but finito”

Reading it again I’m not sure if he means this in a bad way or not.

    Definitely bad.

Another report says they want him gone permanently.

Don't understand the logic myself unless he'll become first teamer again for them if they get relegated.

If nobody wants to pay for him now, why would they in another 6 months time?

  3. Think unfortunately the days of managers getting good players on the cheap or on loan because they’re pals with another manager have gone.

We really needed Warne’s mates in the game to sort us out but that has seemingly proved impossible.

I think the big realisation from this window is that we're not as flush as first thought, either through EFL restrictions or our own frugality. The message this time has been very clearly the club cannot put much money into signings. I'm guessing the restrictions we're still under are quite harsh but for some reason we're reluctant to throw the EFL under the bus by saying this explicitly.

Having tight restrictions that massively limit our transfer dealings is absolutely not Warne's fault.

My main issue is the complete lack of tempering expectations from the club. Why did we ever come out and make comments about having a 'good budget', when in January we'd be having to do weird dealings like doing a permanent transfer as an initial loan? If the restrictions were still tight we should have been subtly warning fans that we likely still weren't able to spend transfer fees- everyone assumed Warne was being coy when he inferred this, turns out he was closer to the truth than we thought.

Yep agree, it might have been starting off on a negative foot but more people would understand if our restrictions etc were more transparent.

I'm not asking for unrealistic signings such as JCH etc. but given the pre Jan talk CBT and maybe 1 other if we're lucky is underwhelming.

In the grand scheme of things, there's plenty of time left. How many deals get done on the last day (tomorrow)? Happens every bloody year, like last minute Christmas shopping.

True but how many deadline days have we smashed? Not since Mac 1 believe. Even Rowett we got gazumped on Lookman and missed out on Grosicki who later signed for Hull and was class.

I reckon we'll get Gregory or some old codger of that nature and that'll be it.

Restrictions lifted for next season when the league will be three times as tough.

And yet he got 18 goals in 42 league 1 appearances last season for a promotion winning side who were top for chunks of the season.

Collins is on 13 from 29.

I hope Smith is an improvement. I hope we get him in and he can do well but not at the risk of having to hand out a 3 year contract or anything silly

Agree I’d want Smith on loan. I’d be equally as peed off he signed permanently.

I guess all will be revealed but I’m hoping we can offload one to fund a midfielder as well (providing it’s not a 35 year old codger).

I don’t think we’re gonna get an upgrade on a guy with 18 goals with a third of the season left to play. Probably going to put score McGoldrick this year. Best we can hope for is good cover short term with a longer term replacement in the summer.

    Fair point.

I’d class Smith as an upgrade or on par. Gregory not so much, thus my displeasure.

If we sold Cashin we’d need a replacement for him because there’s no obvious CB partnership at the club to replace him.
Nelson and Bradley together would be a disaster.

Reckon we could bring in a decent defender for £1m. Obviously I’d be wanting £4.5m minimum for Cash.

Just think this season is there for the taking rather than selling Cash in the summer and having to start again.

What is the point in our scouting department? What do they actually do all year?

Sat playing fifa I reckon. Any of us could have suggested Lee Gregory if we’re desperate.

Genuinely not had a decent January since we signed Ince and Lingard.

Not sure why this is being mocked. I thought he did a pretty good job for us when we were struggling in the Championship.

Anyone seen him play recently? Just hoping his legs haven't gone.

He was solid two years ago. But personally and I might only be speaking for myself here, I was hoping for an upgrade on Collins not a back up.

Not bothered whether we are linked with anyone or not - it's meaningless. The important thing is whatever is (or isn't) going on within the Club.

    Obviously.

But from an excitement point of view the anticipation of a signing adds to the drama.

I'm afraid we blew our wad in the summer.  Once the Cashin deal went pear shaped, as we dug our heels in on a loan back or loan for Edmundson from Ipswich where he was going straight on loan, our options were curtailed.   I suggested a few weeks ago that I'd heard some must go on loan or permanent before much else could happen.  Seems likely.

Listening to PW it sounds like we have enough in the pot for one more. Of what standard god knows.

In our defence Brighton are sitting on a pile of riches so for them to haggle over £4m until 5 hours before deadline was poor form. Not sure why we’ve been so adamant he’s not for sale this month though.

What do you want us linked with every player for us to get none or the club to do the business in private and sign players?

Bit of both. Love a dirty transfer rumour, something mad Mel excelled at. All this hush hush is boring.

But will concede nobody can moan about our dealings until the window is shut.
