  1. Interview with Johnny on the latest episode of the Rams Review podcast.  Quite interesting.  Sounds like he mainly enjoyed his time at Derby but it didn’t end well for him.

He's already had two seasons in the championship where he was mostly excellent,he will actually be better in a league where there is a little more football played imo

I think it’s stretching it a bit to say he was excellent in the Championship.  He started well with 5 goals in 11 appearances.  Over the next 2 seasons he scored 2 goals (1 in each) and started a combined 21 games.  I know Rooney didn’t really rate him, but to say he was excellent isn’t right.

He may play better in the Championship now he’s a bit more mature.  Personally, if he hadn’t come through the academy with those stats, I don’t think there’d quite be the clamour for him be starting games and staying.  A number of managers haven’t rated him and arguably, Warne has got the best out of him since his immediate impact.  At some point he needs to realise his potential.  He may also have to realise that his preferred position, may not be his best position.

If I was him, no way would I consider dropping a division as it would be a backward step.  If it’s a choice between Derby and Rotherham, he’d be better off knuckling down and playing well in the Championship than L1.

  3. I think you great break Rooney’s spell with us into several parts.

As a player, there are 2 distinct differences between pre and post the COVID break.  At the start, superb.  He ran the show in lots of games and was in good shape.  After the restart, he was totally out of shape and was hinderance to the team.  In Ryan Conways book I think it’s Max Lowe who said they’d all been given individual trading plans to keep in shape.  When they returned, Rooney had obviously put on a bit of timber and after running 1 lap of the pitch on the first training session he gave up and went back in the changing room.  He looked off the pace in matches and could barely run.

Then as a manager there are also 2 parts.  When he took over he was shocking.  No tactics, no plan.  You’d think for someone having worked for some of the best managers and coaches and with an aspiration to be a manager he’d have an idea how he wanted his teams to play.  We just did what the opposition did.  Then the administration season, which I think is his finest moment.  We did start with a plan and structure as to how he wanted us to play.  Although I think he was a bit lucky to have a good coaching staff with him.  But from the admin announcement he became a leader.  He lead the players, the staff behind the scenes, the fans - everyone.  He galvanised the club and the city.  It was us against the world and he created a siege mentality.  He didn’t let the points deductions get to anyone.  Many would have given up, he gave us all hope and belief that we could stay up.

I’ll always remember that last season, weirdly one of the best despite the ending.  I wish him well at Plymouth, except against us!!  You have to admire his desire to keep going and trying again.  I hope he takes the time to get his backroom team right as I think this will be key to whether he makes a good go of it or not.

It’s interesting to hear about potential Cashin links. There have been 2 CB names which have come to me in the last couple of days, 1 has visited the training ground and the other has only been in spoken about (I’m sorry I’m unsure which is in which order)

    • Harry Souttar (Leicester)

    • Nigel Lonwijk (Wolves)

In my opinion, 2 very different centre backs but wouldn’t have thought we’d be after 2, unless there were any departures…

With the information provided, I believe Souttar is a loan and Lonwijk is permanent.

Will update if I get any more info.

I’d wondered about Souttar.  He was decent at Stoke and signed for Leicester at the wrong time and was probably a panic buy in their relegation season.  He’s not Prem quality and Leicester will need rid.

    Hyundai Kona 64Kw.

200bhp, not that I drive fast but far better pick up than my Clio GT.

Top speed 102, which sounds puny but even in Germany I won't go over a ton on the autobahn.

Bargain. I was looking at a hateful, evil tesla but with all the extras and dealer sleight of hand, a 290 monthly payment turned out to be over 400 on PCP. I ended up with a HP of 345 per month. Happy motorist here.

Snap.  I’ve ordered one through the salary sacrifice scheme at work so includes insurance, tyres, etc.  I don’t get free charging but my plan is to switch to the Octopus Go tariff.  It cost about 9p/kWh overnight.  I reckon a charge will last me a week, give or take.  I’ve worked out that with fuel cost saving, no road tax, no insurance it’ll save me about £1600/yr (ish) in running costs.

  6. Ring the council, most will deal with pests.  We’ve had them in our garden, mainly passing through.  The council charged about £50 for 4 visits and they did go.  Sod’s Law, spotted another hole in the garden at the weekend so put a couple of blocks of rat poison down and capped the hole so the dogs can’t get to it.  No sign since 🤞.

I said it’s global reputation. Teams like Villarreal have one because they play in Europe’s elite competition and have elite players.

It’s not that difficult to understand is it?

The wider fanbase goes hand in hand with global reputation and elite stars playing for them.

Real Madrid have a legion of Mexican followers because of Hugo Sanchez.

I don’t see Derby having a legion of followers because of Bradley Johnson…

    That’ll be no.

He did his own scouting? Wasn't it his brother?

I've always wondered why if he's so marvellous he takes an absolute age to take a team up?

I don't think he's got that managerial flair to get a team into the prem? He's a bit of a steady Eddie, imo.

Watched Mansfield a bit last season. people thinking Warne was a hard watch want to take in a few of their games!

You’re right about him being a steady Eddie.  I think Clough’s strengths lie in him building a culture and scouting and recruiting good players at bargain prices.  Tactically he gets a bit scared at crucial times.  That’s why it needed a Mac to come in, take the shackles off and maybe give them a bit more belief and confidence.

In the modern era, I think Clough would make a great Director of Football.

I agree except for the fact that in recent years we have seen the emergence of recruitment departments at all of the bigger clubs using IT to keep tabs on all emerging talent anywhere and looking to hoover it up. So clubs that develop slowly are always at risk of 1 step forward two steps back

That’s a fair point.  And I think you need a long-term strategy for recruiting and developing your own squad.  Like having a succession plan.  You know you have a top player, you also know that he’ll move on for a big fee in 3 years time, for arguments sake.  And that’s both for the benefit of the club and the player.  The trick is in either having your own product who can fill the gap or your scouting network has identified those options.

A long-term plan is essential to try and avoid the 2 steps back.

I think the point being made was about the GSE ownership, not Clough. As in GSE ran the club prudently for a period with Clough in charge, slowly building a side with some shrewd recruiting north of the border and the odd Barker type fee, then Steve McClaren took the bulk of that side and turned it into a top team in the champ who narrowly missed out on promotion against qpr at Wembley in 2014.
GSE’s slower burn model for running the club proved almost as successful as throwing loads of cash at it did under Morris.
Ultimately neither worked so it’ll be interesting to see how we approach things now.

Couldn’t have put it better myself 👍.  It just needed a manager with a more expressive approach

Unfortunately, the way to get promoted to the premier is to generally throw money at it. We are the only club who failed and got punished. Time and time again clubs have been promoted by throwing money at it and have avoided punishment, the list is very long, Villa, Fester, Bournemouth twice, QPR, Watford, etc.

Clubs doing it the 'right way' are few and far between.

And you could say that the closest we came was by doing it the right way.  We built slow and steady under GSE and let Clough build a team - OK, partly their own doing in their first 2 windows.  Sometimes you need to move slowly to move quickly.  I think it’s better to have steady, focused and controlled growth than trying to throw money at it and hope for quick results.

  12. I think Rooney proved himself to be a good leader.  He galvanised everyone in adversity.  He really did become a figurehead when we needed him to be and brought everyone together - players, staff and fans.  But that’s what he is.  A figurehead and leader.  He needs football people and tacticians around him.  He fell a bit lucky with us that Rosenior and others were already here.  Whether it’s Plymouth or anybody else, it’s important he gets his back room staff right.  Get it wrong, and it might be his last gig.

  13. I buy something related to the traditional wedding anniversaries.  10 years is tin, maybe a pack of Stella 😂.  We’ve got just over a year to go to get to 10 so I can’t tell you what you she’s bought me as an idea.

If you do something like that I’ve bought some bespoke gifts off places like Not on the High Street for Mrs FBM that have given me some brownie points.

I can’t wait for 15 years, then I get time off for good behaviour 😂.

One record gone. Sheff U ended with 104 goals against and in doing so creamed our meagre total of 89 in a 38 game PL season. In fact they even beat Swindon's old record or 100 and that was in a 42 game season.

One record not beaten but equalled. Sheff U equalled our record GD of -69.

Also read an FB post claiming that in game 37, Man U passed the number of shots against in a PL season record that we apparently have had since that 07/08 debacle. I haven't been able to confirm that.

As well as most goals conceded in a season, Sheff Utd also set a PL record for the fewest clean sheets and most goals conceded at home.

    Kieran McKenna

That’s what I reckon.  And if I was him I’d be off from Ipswich like a shot. His stock is high at the minute with back to back promotions.  The chances of Ipswich staying up are slim.  He might not get the chance again if he doesn’t take one now.  Assuming he gets offered it.

Forgive the crude scribbles but his legs have gone to the extent that… he’s class, but only if you’re bossing the game and he has the ball in any of these areas. His creativity and threat from range is a joke… arguably the best left foot I’ve seen in a Derby shirt. Had shooting, delivery and a threaded ball inside.

Has to go though, at his best a joy to watch.
