We've seen some games this season which wouldn't be out of place in the Championship - this wasn't one of them. All a tad flat and disappointing. Both teams handing over possession too easily, lots of bluster with little skill. A very league 1 affair.
I'm all for more attacking and Warne said after he wants to see even more crosses into the box. Fine. No problem. But you a) have to then coach players to cross effectively and b) tell your players to get into the box to get on the end of them. So many crosses were put in because you could feel the player being told "I have to cross". But there was no-one there. Or it hit the first man. A victory for quantity over quality - presumably playing the law of averages that sooner or later one will break for you.
I thought defence and midfield played well today, but in the attacking third we weren't up to much other than McGoldrick, who's a joy to watch. Once he went off, all our attacking impetus went with him.
I expected Wednesday to be much better than they were but again proves the point there is nothing to fear in this league. A point was fair and a decent point all things considered.
    Ref was awful.

VulcanRam got a reaction from Ellafella in Derby County Vs. Sheffield Wednesday: player ratings
Wildsmith 7 little to do but did it well and made an important save
Smith 6 doing a good job at RB
Cashin 7 partnering really well with Foz
Forsyth 7.5 led the back line well
Sibley 6 again, doing a job there, couple of decent runs
Dobbin 6.5 didn't get him on the ball nearly enough in the first half, his side was wide open. Couple of good runs.
Knight 6 didn't have time to impact the game
Bird ? 7 very good display, best he's been for a while imo
    Roberts 6 Late sub
Barkhuisen 6.5 looks slightly off the pace, understandably, but still a threat. Glad he's back.
Hourihane 6.5 steady, flitted in and out as he usually does.
McGoldrick 7 Classiest player on the pitch in an attacking sense, when he goes off we lost all attacking impetus
Osula 6 Didn't really get any service
Collins 5 Little went right for him
Mendez-Laing 6 Not on for long, glad he's back, we've missed his direct style

I'm quite surprised about the negativity on here (yes, I know).
I really enjoyed the game, two good sides in this league giving it a go. Other than a period in the second half when they got on top of us for a bit, we more than matched them and created all the best chances.
We're showing improved resilience and delighted to see some yellow cards for breaking up attacks - about time we got a bit more streetwise in that department.
Shout out for Thompson, who I thought did very well on his first start of the season, and the three centre backs. And of course McGoldrick, who was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch in terms of quality. Not sure why Sky didn't give him PoM.
After a very hectic schedule and two more injuries to important players, this was a really good point and a solid away performance. Good effort!

Superb example of a professional footballer. Stearman is precisely the sort of character you need in the dressing room. Doesn’t spit his dummy out when younger players get selected over him; instead puts the work in to help them progress. Brilliant guy.

I thought he was one of the poorer ones we've had. Lacked consistency all game, similar incidents given then not given, bookings for fouls when worse had preceded. We benefited from some, they did from others. Set the precedent when being conned with that pathetic dive from a Portsmouth player early and didn't improve from there. Worst call on the night was the offside for the Portsmouth player on the far side from the assistant; he must have been a good two to three yards on.
If he felt simulation was the offence he can book him later if he plays advantage, though that booking/advantage situation normally only applies if the non-offending team has a chance of scoring. Which probably means he didn't think there was enough in this one to warrant a card.
The rule about advantage and not producing a booking anymore is around a foul that is preventing a promising attack. You used to book later even if playing advantage, but that rule was changed a couple of seasons ago when the DOGSO law was changed to downgrade a DOGSO advantage from red to yellow. So now, if a player commits a foul that prevents a promising attack but you play on, you don't caution when play is next stopped.

I loved his first time with us. Runaway train, tried to do too much, often  ran in to traffic, was still learning … but he was electric. Full speed he was quickest on the pitch, and that was before he switched on the after burners. Haven’t seen change of pace like his ever.  Frightened the life out of defences, so they doubled up. He made gaps for everyone else. So sorry it didn’t work out, he could have been a folk hero here. I wish him well and hope he’ll get it together.
