Judge him just by the last couple of months and yes, it looks bad. But what happened before that was pretty impressive. He took a team that were bottom under Cocu (an experienced, successful manager) and basically got us to safety with promotion-level form. We won five in six championship games which basically saved our season. And all this with only CKR up front (I mean he's done well, but hardly prolific!) and then a potentially career-ending injury to the one player we couldn't afford to lose. (If Bielik stayed fit I'm fairly confident we finish mid-table.)
None of this squad are 'his' players. Most of the loans were okay given they were clearly last-minute scrambles. With a bit of time (and, please God, money) he might actually set up a decent team. And if there is anything like a positive story to tell about Derby, he will be able to get players other managers can't. Lampard did that, it made him look a much better manager, and it nearly got us promoted.
There are a lot of things that worry me more than Rooney being manager next season.

Knight and sibley in particular..both have clearly regressed quite spectacularly since last season.
I'd include Waggers in there too,aside from his last game,he's had a massive downturn in form since wayne took over.

Fair enough - I actually think Knight ran out of steam at the end of the season - he’s played a huge amount of football for a young player and with a lot of pressure on him at times to drive the team on - its a big ask for any young player to be that consistent over 46 games....I don’t believe he’s regressed - I just thinks he’s fecked and needs a physical and mental recharge.
As for Sibley, whilst I don’t think he should have played out on the left - he has hardly done anything to justify regular inclusion in the CAM role - and apart from the Birmingham game - he offered very little consistently in any other game he started. His goals last season were excellent - but let’s remember he was the new kid on the block - the opposition knew nothing about his ability so he was afforded more time and space - which this season he wasn’t - so might that be part of the reason for his regression - being a marked man - and therefore having to find more ways himself to hit the same mark as last year?

Baalocks. The first sentence in particular. The season is 46 games long, and we secured enough points to end above the two teams you mention. Indeed so did lickle Wycombe. Based on your skewed ‘last minute’ view, Wayne Rooney is actually a hero for getting us those late 3 points at Norwich with a wonderful free kick.

Just out of interest, who are these several KEY players you refer to? Not being argumentative....just genuinely keen to see who you rate as key out of those he’s had available?

I had similar thoughts about Mac and Rooney. Mac could never make a decision, could never leave out one of his favourites, thats why he's never succeeded as a manager, he wanted to be liked too much. You really do have to be a complete bar steward like Fergie, Clough snr, etc.
I actually think Rooney could have that mindset. Give him next season, he's a street fighter and has had a baptism of fire as a manager. He's capable of learning quickly and adapting his team to what they are capable of rather than what he thought they could do.

Rooney should never have been signed as a player. Another lousy Morris ‘profile’ arrangement. Anyone who saw him perform in the MLS could see he was still skilful, but had the legs of Devon Lock. His signing immediately put Cocu in difficulty, and made hits position pretty untenable. Cocu’s vulnerability was further fuelled by Rooney, his agent and his mates. We would have finished higher this season in my opinion if Cocu had stayed, and been able to use Bielik and Kaz, and make a few more (loan) signings in January. Cocu had too many coaches foisted upon him with Rooney and Rosenior. He should have been allowed to rely on his usual 2 mates - the quiet one with the dark hair, and the curly haired one who smiled and hugged a lot.
Anyway, Rooney got the management gig, and was not allowed to select his own support team. Meddling Mel thinking initially that management by committee was a great thing, and also that some bloke who is keen on Newcastle might help lurking iat the back of the stand. Rooney however committed himself fully to the task, and dealt reasonably well with the cards dealt to him, and the setbacks of losing Curt, Bielik, and many others during the last 6 months. His loan signings were all pretty ok in January, but again his luck wasn’t in with injuries. Obviously a bit tactically naive, but he gave opportunities to a lot of our youth, and at the end of the day kept us in the league, when a great many in November/December were convinced we were going down. He did so with players demotivated by not being paid, all the off pitch drama, and and with many senior pros at the end of their contract and not likely to get any renewal with the financing uncertainty.
Rooney hasn’t as yet evidenced that he has his own preferred style, but he has very good contacts which hopefully will mean he will secure that players in the next few month he wants, to play the way he wants. In my book he has just about done enough to justify another season to see if he can use those contacts, and also put into practice the knowledge he would have gained from hist time under Fergusson, Jose, Van Gaal, etc. I would push Rosenior out (nice bloke, deserves his own management job in the first or second division), etc., and get a decent experienced number two, and not one who has hair issues and likes to use an umbrella to keep himself dry. 

Rooney’s brief was to keep us up this season. He’s done that. The football hasn’t been pretty and the defending in this last 7 games has been horrendous. However, we did have a very good run if I recall and played some good football.....I’m pretty sure I saw us beat a few top teams and were top or close to the top of the form table at one point - and yes..... Rooney was the manager.  
There have been mitigating circumstances too, for example, you could see in the short time he played today what a difference Curtis Davies would have made to our season if he’d been fit - he’s a leader and organiser - and a bloody solid championship defender (not ball player!!). Further, losing arguable one of the championships best players in Bielik clearly shattered the spine - a bit like when we lost George Thorne for so long and struggled to find someone suitable to fill that role. I’ll throw in Lawrence being out for so long, losing Wisdom, Gregory, Menghi and the enduring injury to CKR and it’s understandable that we’ve scraped home - look at the bench strength - its just not there - I’m sure one or two of the kids we have will go on to be solid championship players but lets not suggest our crop of kids were the same as the crop Alex Ferguson benefitted from at Man Utd.
We were bottom when he took over. He’s made mistakes along the way - and at times some strange team choices - but ultimately we stayed up. Mission accomplished - and I honestly think he will take us forward next season. COYR.

Don't agree. Not interested in a long debate but I hope he gets next season with some opportunity to bring in some quality players. UTR

Mel/ Erik or whoever owns the club next season needs to find out where Chris Wilder lives and go and camp in his garden until he agrees manage us

The season has been the worst I can remember as a Derby fan. Rooney came in and managed to make us solid for a good run before injuries and confidence got sapped away. Add to that all the disruption in the boardroom and EFL stuff and it’s been a real baptism of fire.
I believe that he can learn from these lessons and all the teams start at 0 points (hopefully) next season and have 46 games to strive or survive. His tactics have been condemned most recent match days, but the squad has been bare bones for the run in.
Changing manager will take time and it won’t help us rebuild our squad, which is the priority right now. Rooney has the contacts and the name to draw in better players than our league position deserves. The Waghorn interview after the match leads me to believe that the players still believe in him.
Getting rid of Rooney will Also cost money that is better off used on the squad. Let him sign some players to build a better squad, give him some games next season to get some results. If things start terribly and don’t improve then we can get rid.
No one will be expecting us to transform and be a top 6 side next season, so let’s try and get some stability back in the coaching team.
 

I was in the minority of keeping Nigel Clough. He was building a superb team and would have got us promoted on a ridiculously small budget.

Nope , we offered Chris Martin a very good contract but the greedy disloyal player held us to ransom ,touted round for MORE and left ,leaving us in the lurch in the same way lampard did after keeping his options open for as long as he could , bet he would have stayed if he couldn’t leverage more elsewhere
