Warne did say he had done his bit on the transfers and it had gone upstairs to presumably Pearce to sort out. Would you trust Pearce on money matters?

Well he is still in a job so maybe his advice has been very good and maybe not everyone has listened to it?

Teams are coming to PP now and “Parking the bus”. Only one win in our last four home games. They know most of our attacking comes down the wings. Could we sign a midfield player that could beat a man and set something up on a regular basis ?

Not a great deal of point if we are only playing it wide and crossing it and let’s be honest if we are trying to sign another winger and a taller centre forward warne wants to get it wide and cross it even more? We are one dimensional and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. It may well get us promoted but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Would it be concerning? We may earn more than others clubs, but Clowes may have made the decision to run us more sustainably. For example, Charlton have averaged losses of £7.5m since they were relegated from the Championship. Clubs such as Oxford have also taken this season to push the boat out in an attempt to get promoted too.

I have no problem not overpaying in fees and wages considering all the hurt we went through with the administration and very nearly losing our football club. Just look at our last types of fees paid out because they were basically disastrous.

i know Warne wanted Cashin and Bird sold perviously to spend out but at least he has worked out that we actually need them and his record at Derby with signing players is not good at all is it, well not in my opinion

My Charlton STH mates have said CBT is defo going and we have been mentioned

when I asked about CBT though they all agreed he’s super frustrating , quick yes but lacks ball control and guile and will frustrate a lot of fans if we signed him

Lacks ball control - in terms of any professional footballer I struggle with that one when it’s a fundamental basic - not referencing this lad just all of them.

Sibley isn't showing anything in league 1 nowadays let alone championship (yes he doesn't get much of a run to build up form but plenty of others don't that have shown more) disappointed In his progress currently

Difficult question when we don’t really play much decent football which can make good players look ordinary

If we go up I’d keep the following and add to the following areas of the team to get us at least half way up the championship - obviously depends on formations too…

    Gk - New

    Right Back - Niambi

    Left Back - New

    Centre half - Cashin

    Centre half - Nelson

    Right Mid - Wilson

    Centre Mid - New

    Centre Mid - Bird

    Left Mid - Mendez

    Striker - New

    Striker - New

Subs - Collins, Ward, Thompson , New, New,New,New…..

Love our current lads but without strengthening I fear we’d do a Wednesday and struggle and feel we’d need to alter the style of play a little to do well in the championship …but that’s a entiiiiiirrrrreeeelllyyyy different thread

Depends who the manager was 👍

Whilst 352 suits some players, such as Collins, it doesn't suit others. Mendez-Laing went from having 5 goals and 4 assists in his 9 games on the left wing, to just 1 goal in 5 when played in the middle.

Yep, and he has been bundled over to anywhere to fit ward and Wilson in on the right hand side. Play your best players in their best positions and if that means some don’t play 🤷‍♂️

I'll be astounded if we bring in a proven player like Lang or CBT this window.

If the last two windows have taught us anything its that we don't have the funds to cherry pick who we sign and when it comes to forward players for some mysterious reason they seem to get close to signing only to disappear in to the night.

Best we can hope for is someone like TJJ (young, maybe injury prone) on deadline day I reckon.

Players have got to want to come here because we can only afford what we can afford to pay them, Waghorn being a great example of someone who wanted to play for Derby County - shame he is being injured so much

Completely agree Sparkie.  Warne knows him well and like Collins he puts a shift in, but he's quicker, better in the air and offers better movement which would open things up more for our wider and central midfield players.

6 Months loan, or 18 month contract at the very best, but Wednesday would have to sell him to us for peanuts if that was the case.  Also depends how long Waggy is out for.

A loan the best option, so if Sheff Weds come down he could go back to their squad.

    Cheers

Great points apart from suggesting he is quick as he has half the pace of Collins but much better in the air.

I think the main reason he's gone to a back 3 is because we haven't got an out and out right back. Playing Wilson there essentially takes away his biggest threat which is running with the ball and taking players on and being an attacking threat in the final third and Joe Ward basically can't defend. So neither are suited to playing as a right back in a back 4. But are ok playing as a wing back. When Nyambe is back we'll have more of an option to play a back 4.

I still think there's a player there with Fornah. He's just too laid back and has too many touches. He shows glimpses of what he can do. But there are times he needs to release the ball quicker, but this will need to be coached in to him. I wouldn't write Fornah off just yet. Elder I think will come good, but he is going to need a run of games. He's never gonna be able to get up to speed if he's in and out and until he has a proper run. I won't judge him.

One of the benefits of playing a 3 at the back is the fact we play 2 up top. Since that Collins has been scoring and that's no coincidence. Anyone with eyes can see he's not lone striker. All his goals at Luton came in a 2.

Collins is not a lone striker so absolutely correct but we look awful when playing with 3 at the back - maybe a good old fashioned 442

considering Ward and Bradley were Warne’s big summer signings specifically to probably play 3 at the back it’s kind of concerning

    Agreed.

That cost us last season and we could make do with what we have, but our lack of depth means that just one or two injuries will derail our season.

We are in a much stronger position for top 2 than last season, purely due to the quality of the opposition. If we don’t take this chance this season then we will just suffer more financially and there’s no guarantee we would be in a better position to get promoted next year instead.

I understand our budget may not be great, but we have to add quality or we risk just getting left behind.

Smart additions in January also help set us up for the summer if we do go up. There’s a thread about what we’d need to get mid table in the Championship. If we go with what we have and it is enough, then that’s a hell of a lot of work to do again in the summer.

The same goes for the other clubs trying to get promoted - lose a key player and it’s difficult to replace them.

Players to keep for next season :

    Wildsmith Vickers

    Nyambe Wilson

    Nelson Cashin Rooney

    Bird Thompson Robinson

    NML Collins

    Off Load

Loach, Fozzy, Elder, Bradley, Fornah, Hourihane, Sibley, Barks, JJ, Waggy, Washington.

So 50% turnover some will attract modest fees others not.

Rather early to say who we keep and let leave because we would need to know which league we are in - that said I expect loach,Hourahan, JJ and Waggy not to be here regardless and personally I would be looking at moving on Bradley Fornah and Washington but we would struggle to get rid of them because of the contracts we gave them and their limited quality

Warne said (Bradford post match) we're close to getting two in at the top end of the pitch who we'd be buying to start, not to be squad players.

You would hope that all signings that were recruited to be starting and not just squad players - anyway that sounds like he is deflecting the abysmal performance tonight

Given that he may actually be able to spend some fees as opposed to bargain basement freebies you mean?

We do have to pay substantial amounts for some of those Warne has signed if we gain promotion etc - who knows what he thinks is good value as it’s not easy in the third division and we will not be getting perfection by any means
