Quietly confident. I like looking into the facts when someone makes a nice sweeping statement based on opinion or misconceptions. A brief dig back through the news archive on dcfc.co.uk provided some insight so I thought I’d share it.
So I guess back to the posters original question as to “why” we leave it until the last day, I think the answer is…. We don’t.

    The 2022 summer transfer window ran from June 10th until September 1st. We announced signings as follows;
    - 2nd July, Tom Barkhuizen, Joe Wildsmith, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and new deals for Cashin and Thompson.
    - 6th July, Hourihane, Chester and McGoldrick.
    - 8th July, Stearman and Davies re-signed
    - 9th July, Haydon Roberts joined on loan
    - 13th July, Scott Loach and James Collins signed.
    - 14th July, Kwaku Oduroh signed
    - 16th July, Korey Smith signed
    - 27th July, Forsyth re-signed
    - 3rd August, Dobbin signed on loan
    - 14th August, Anang joined on loan
    - 1st September (deadline day), Osula joins on loan.
Only one of those deals seems to be the last day to me 🤔

Don't quite agree with the strength of the argument but get where you're coming from.
With regard to Hourihane; when I watch him live I'm generally 'meh' but his stats aren't bad but given his pedigree, you'd expect him to have tore up L1 wouldn't ya.
Agreed with Cashin - I really like him and if he can adapt his game a little to allow for his lack of pace, then he'll be pretty damned good. Again, another player with a big heart which is always a bonus.

Look, I want Bird, Sibs and Knighty to be great / good Championship players but they're not (yet, at least).
In other threads, there is talk of how Lampard did a terrible job considering he had Tomori, Mount and Wilson now obviously we're not saying that Bird, Sibs and Knight are at their level but relatively speaking, if they're as good as some talk them up to be, they should be tearing up League One and they really, really haven't.
In a season where we have a 20+ goal striker, a very solid keeper and at least one good CB (Cashin - our best young player IMO), if these 3 were as good as everyone makes out then we should have finished much higher up the table.
I think we're all remembering their promise as they started so young, wanting home-grown to do well, etc but taking hope/emotion out of it and based on last season, I don't see it. These players have all played 100+ games and now in their early 20's. If they were the hot shots some make them out to be, they'd have been bought during the fire sales we had during Administration.
I don't want to be negative - just saying that I think we need to calm down a bit and be a bit more realistic. I want them to be as good as some make them out to be - they just ain't at the minute. Next season is huge for them - I sincerely hope that they really kick on and deliver on their early promise but this talk about £x millions is crazy. Last season we were a slightly above average League One team as illustrated by our finishing position - let's not get carried away thinking anything different.
Oh, and with Bielik - an expensive legacy of the past. He'll go on a free/nominal fee. Good to see him playing so many games and he's back in the Poland squad (all great for him and us) but with one year left on his contract and massive wages, I'm sure the club will take anything and be delighted to have him off the wage bill.

He has one year left, an option we activated earlier this season. If he doesn't go this summer for a decent fee he goes for next to nothing in January or actual nothing in the summer.

FWIW I think Didzy would be mad to go elsewhere based on on-pitch aspects. He's clearly loved by fans and management alike, playing in a system that suits him as demonstrated by his most prolific season in his long career. Also, we're obviously looking for promotion and all things being equal, we should be a force to be reckoned with next season whereas Notts County are likely to be looking to stabilise after promotion. Why would you take the risk of playing a different system for a club in a very different position...?
Obviously we have no idea what's going on off the pitch. Loyalty, logistics, money, etc - all unknowns really.
Either way, he seems a really decent fella and I wish him the best in whatever he choses to do.

    Best managers
    Cloughie - Legend
    McKay - Won the title.
Smith - Amazing entertaining football, only matched by Schteve since.
Mac - Amazing all out attacking team, great to watch.
Cox - Div 1 Champions, had financial backing though....
Burley - Flowing attacking football, scuppered in Play-offs with key players injured.  Alledged off pitch activities saw and end to his reign, or he would of delivered PL football in my view.
    Worst
Docherty - Destroyed a Title winning team.
Jewell - Clueless the players failt every week.
    Pearson - Piss poor leader
Cocu Never adapted to Championship football....
Davies- Horrible man, remember his we'll see when we won playoffs, when stated a PL manager.  Followed by his, we will go many games without a win, not forgetting wasting £3m, signing Bambi on Ice.  The worst centre half ever to wear a Derby shirt, yes worse than Keogh!
Let's hope Warney makes the top 3 in years to come... 👍
