Don’t think anyone is forgetting where we were. But equally football is a business governed by money.

ultimately we’re not sustainable in this division, so we need to get promoted asap. We will need to spend money again at some point, we can’t be scared of it because of it being done poorly in the past.
spending £2m on him and if he scores 25 goals and we get promoted would be a brilliant investment.
would argue that just treading water in this division is a bigger waste of money than trying to push on and get promoted.
I also realise that the best situation is arguably a compromise between the two approaches.

To be fair, Wednesdays top scorer has 16, 6 of which were penalties. Plymouths top scorer had 13, 4 which were penalties. Increasing our goals across the team is just as good as a 25 goal striker.

Peterborough, Derby, Portsmouth and Cheltenham had strikers scoring more goals than both Wednesday and Plymouth yet none went up.

I 100% agree we need more firepower, but the sum of the parts just needs to be better than last year

well worth watching his interview, he even says like others have mentioned on here that he wasn't the most technically gifted player but he always gave his all.
Also, you do not need to be a good player to be a good coach. Mourinho for example was never a top player, plenty of others like him too

If Warne and the club are happy to go into the season with that being the case, that's fine. I personally feel its very light and would mean injurie could be catastrophic. I'd say we need at least 3-4, possibly even more factoring that a number of our squad have been unreliable with injuries.
We had 6 of our 16 senior outfield players injured last night, for example.

Watch a game on telly and you may not think much of Collins.
Watch Collins live and you'll see someone who gives his all and makes loads of very decent runs that generally don't get noticed by team mates. He may have the odd strop when he doesn't get played in but it doesn't stop him making those runs.
With Joe Ward's crossing, someone half as good at LWB and possibly Bird or Hourihane playing more advanced, I think he'll bag 20+ this year.
    Delighted he scored last night.
I watched it live but saw the highlights when I got back.
Here's a freeze frame BEFORE Joe Ward receives the ball.
The player with his arm in the air is the 'useless, unintelligent, lazy etc etc' Collins.......halfway through a 40 yard run, anticipating play, showing where he wants the ball........towards the end of a pre-season friendly 'that doesn't matter'. How many times does he do this and not get the delivery?

Martin's talents regardless where you stand with him is irrelevant to us now, Collins is the here and now. Sure he has his limitations, like many League 1 strikers.
Still hit double figures and our 2nd top goalscorer last season.
We have nothing to gain by s******* on the guy at every given opportunity.

Collins has played alright to be fair, put in a lot of effort as always & got on the score sheet. Missed a pen which was pretty casual.
Bird has been most impressive, hopefully Warne can get a good season out of him. Has all the attributes to boss this league, just needs to kick on this year.

Hardly gloating, just pointing out to those who say he doesn't do any of those things, that he clearly can.... I don't think he's a world beater but some of the comments about his lack of ability have been frankly disgraceful

    So, wait.....
The guy who doesn't get in decent scoring positions has for the second time in three games got in a good scoring position....
And the guy that can't finish has got his second goal of pre season
And the guy the can't head has got one of those goals from a header?

    But but but but........

I ducking hope Collins scores and shuts up some of the vile, primitive nobs on here that masquerade as fans. Just find someone to hate why don’t you. He scored in The last preseason, he hit double figures last season in a make shift team. He isn’t a genius but he’s a good lad and doesn’t deserve the total garbage coming form some quarters

If the club were to sign Rhodes - to give us three strikers in him, Collins and Washington - it would be very rare (if ever) that all three are on the pitch at the same time. What is more likely (given a two up top formation) is that any two of those three are on the pitch for virtually every minute of league football next season. That equates to 8,280 minutes of match time between them.
If the trio contributed one goal between them for every 200 minutes of match time played, that equates to 41 league goals over the season - that's eight more than McGoldrick and Collins achieved last season.
Point of this is that instead of getting hooked up on the taste of the individual ingredients, lets concentrate on the taste of the cake... and let the coaching team get on and bake it!

Always rated Bradley Johnson. Not the most technically gifted but he's everything we lack in our midfield set up atm. Someone who is physical, passionate and does the dirty stuff. He's also got a decent left foot on him. I definitely think the youngsters will look up to him, definitely got a leader element to him which will stand him in good Stead.

Some comments seem harsh to me.
Johnson was never quite given the credit he deserved because of the inflated price tag Mel bestowed on him. Sure he had a ropey start but there were runs where he was absolutely bossing midfield.
He’s a decent guy, did a fair bit of charity stuff to demonstrate his character. He absolutely could be a coach to young players, who largely are not ready for league 1 standard; a level he was capable at last season.
Looks a good fit to me.

Appreciate he might not be as exciting as some of the names rumoured, but perhaps he could be what we need? Everyone lost their mind when Colin Kazim Richards signed but he was exactly what that team needed.
Just saying, if he signs then why not wait and see before writing him off...

Jordan Rhodes would be a decent signing imo for League 1. Washington & Collins would be a good partner for Rhodes as they put the shift in so Rhodes can score.
Id prefer him in our squad rather than in one of our promotion rivals.

This, this and this again.  I read this thread over breakfast and it made me want to back to bed and wake up in May when the season is over!!
I said in another thread on the main forum page that if we had 3 strikers, each contributing around 15 goals each we’ll be better off than last season.  We’re getting hung up on replacing 20+ goals from McGoldrick but ignoring pens (he had 4 and assuming someone else will score them) that leaves 18 league goals.  I think with a bit more out of Collins, and I think he will get more, Washington and Rhodes, if it happens, we’ll do that.  Plus goals from around the team, threats at set pieces, etc.  @Ambitious has given some good stats about Rhodes and I think he’s right.  In the right system, with the right players around him, he’ll score goals in L1.  Personally, I’d be quite happy with a free transfer and a 1 year contract with another 1 year option.
And I might be about to commit heresy and be struck by a bolt of lightening but towards the end of last season I think McGoldrick hindered us.  At time he could have passed more and played others in.  I think he got a bit too focused on his best goal scoring season.
