Chris Martin has done nothing above Tier 2 in the League - 5 Premier League appearances
yielded no goals and no assists :-

    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/chris-martin/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/46154

To be fair, he did score 3 goals at International level for Scotland, but then so did
ex-Ram Ikechi Anya, so perhaps not too much to brag about.

If we go back just 5 years, we've had Darren Bent, David Nugent and Matej Vydra on the Books.
They've all had decent careers at Premier League Level :-

    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/david-nugent/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/33963

    https://www.transfermarkt.com/matej-vydra/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/101500

Just to pick some salient data from those Transfermarkt Stats :-

Chris Martin - 456 Championship appearances have yielded 114 Goals.

Darren Bent - 277 Premier League appearances yielded 106 Goals.

Do you really believe Chris Martin is/was a better Striker than Darren Bent?

Stretch back 10 Years, and you bring Patrick Bamford into play :-

    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-bamford/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/183334

OK he was only on Loan, but he did get us 8 Goals and 4 assists from 23 Games, and he wasn't
playing as an out and out striker. Like Bent/Nuge/Vyds, Bamford has performed well in the Top Tier.
His first Season with the Dirties in the Premier League yielded 17 Goals and 8 assists from 38 Appearances.
There is no way Chris Martin would have/could have matched those Stats in the Top Tier.

If we delve back further into your 20 to 30 Year Time Frame, players like Strupar/Wanchope/Ravanelli/Baiano
have played for us. Again these are Strikers who have performed with distinction in the Top Tiers. Wanchope
scored 44 International goals for Costa Rica in 77 Games.

I'm sure I've missed some more decent Strikers in your Timeframe but it's late and I'm
off to bed - Gabbi, Kitson maybe?

As if you’ve gone to all that time and effort to try and make a point, purely because you read what I said completely wrong.

  2. He looks a real handful. I don't think we should expect to see much of him in league this year at 17 but we need to work hard at growing him as a player. He makes some good runs, battles well. Composure and confidence in front of goal and we've got a gem. Get him on a contract so we dont lose him.

    One for the future.

  3. Even if our budget is bigger than last year. Even if we have 5 million to spend. It doesn't mean that we will or more importantly should.

If we can make a squad worthy of competing at the top end of league 1 without spending a penny then I think we absolutely should. There is more than enough free agents about to make this squad better than it currently is. I am happy with business so far, and I am sure with a few extra editions, whether that's frees or loans we will be in a competitive top 6 position.

It's entirely possible to go where the money is and go out there to make a career for yourself, without first s******* on the front garden and pissing in the milk bottles of the people who adopted you at a young age, put you through school and allowed you to gain work experience in the family business.

Exactly this. I am sure we would not have stood in his way should he want to leave. We would have just expected the comp we deserve for the time, facilities and effort put in to making him the footballer he is today. I'm not one to hate on any player who leaves us to better themselves, or those forced out, but he and his advisors are a bunch of Cnuts.

Both will end up in the championship - Dack was on a wedge at Blackburn and is focused on becoming a reality tv personality. I can’t imagine he’s the type Warne would be after, it strikes me as something that would immediately put him off. Onomah is an interesting one, a good footballer that’s sort of been around for a while now without actually doing anything - one assist in 13 appearances at Preston last season. Imagine he would want decent money too. A gamble but he does have technical ability and athleticism.

Who expected Conor Hourihane to drop to league 1? He could still do a job in the champ. As time goes on, players may just want be be considered for first team football and enjoy the project.

Rather we bought Lucas Jao from reading always done well against us.

He's a free, however has been on high wages and has a poor injury record. Could be a big gamble at this stage. Likely to get championship and foreign interest.

    Understood.

McClaren being one that failed to adjust the system when Martin was injured.

End of the day, it's Warne's call, we're just here debating the what ifs.

What if Warne left and Martin was still a free agent, you never know I guess.

Im hoping he doesn’t leave and he gets the job done. I’m sure he’s got some good strikers lined up. Fingers crossed for that anyway

Rumours suggested Smith and Knibbs were joining a club as a pair. Woth Knibbs' move finally being completed, it's no surprise Smith is following.

Why are people bothered about these too ? They’re about as prolific as Washington, if not worse. Yet Washington has got heaps of abuse.

You might not agree, it's not rubbish though as Warne has specifically spoken about Chris Martin not suiting his style.

"But there's no contact from me or the club, or anything like that. There is no intention, respectfully from me, to sign him. I play with a high press at the front of the pitch and I'd look a bit of an idiot if I signed a non-pressing centre forward in truth.

"I don't know if he ever did press, but he's a target man and a great finisher. But you pick players who suit your system, not the other way around."

I get that and remember what he said. I just don’t personally agree with ruling out a lot of strikers purely because you have 1 way of playing or thinking.
we’ve seen many managers be criticised for having ‘1 way of playing’. Having a player like Martin told hold the ball up and frustrate opponents is a quality skill when seeing games out. Asking players to press for 90 mins doesn’t usually end well, especially over a 50+ game season

  10. Yes.

i keep seeing this rubbish about Warne liking players who run and hassle the opponents. That’s all fine when we haven’t got the ball. I don’t really expect us to be chasing most games. For that reason, having a player like Martin who is a focal point and can hold the ball would be perfect for those who can get in and around him.
I’m all for having some strikers who are willing to run the channels and do the dirty work. You also want a striker who can play the intelligent way.
