This actually sounds like an innovative and interesting idea, vs say the Ulez extension for London. I'm sure there will be edge cases where some people miss out, but don't think it deserves writing off so quickly. In terms if freedom, bus journeys should be quicker without as many cars clogging up the streets...car drivers switching to buses might find their new journey quicker too.

Seen this on twitter, so thought I’d bring it to the forum. If you could only choose one team to win on Saturday, would it be Derby or England?
For me, the answer is easy. I’d much rather England beat France in a World Cup Quarter Final and have the whole country go mad than Derby win a random league game.

I think / believe there’s a slight shift today though and I believe though lots don’t see it it will become clearer , the middle classes and the small business people are comming under attack now where as it was the working class back then , the working class are almost destroyed today with little power or say over they’re lives , jobs and security, zero hours contracts abound , agency workers , self employed , sub contractor s all with little to no rights and droppable at the drop of a hat ,
the middle classes are todays targets

2 strikes that caused a 3/4 working week early/mid 70s, Thatcher the milk snatcher never forgot the power of the Unions, Red Robbo(Derick Robinson) at British Leyland had become some kind of an Icon, If the Water in the summer was too warm he'd bring the workers out, Work to rule, Lightning strikes, There weren't ballots in them days...you did as you were told.
I've read Scargill books, He tells how he was treated while at the pit, He says they tried to break him by giving him menial tasks...but it's only the written word, Scargill hated Thatcher and Thatcher hated the Unions, She brought in draconian union laws, Stopped some social payments, This was against those that in an instant would take up arms to defend our Country if asked.
Those that are my age or nearing my age and lived in the 70s and 80s would know what happened, Whether you were on the right or left of politics, Whether you read the Mirror or the Sun, Whether you went for a beer at the working mens clubs or to a dinner/dance with your better half, You couldn't miss the divide that Politics brought...and it hasn't changed ?

The decision to destroy UK coal mining was entirely political. It was carefully planned and thought through. It was a strategy to break the power of the miners union. The availability of cheaper Polish coal (from a Communist puppet-state no less) was a major factor. I think they knew that Scargill would act exactly the way they wanted him to and he fell into the trap that was set for him. The miners themselves and their communities were just cannon-fodder in a battle of wills and egos.
Whilst I would say that it's perhaps better for many reasons that we're no longer sending men underground to dig coal, the way it was done, and the lack of investment in shattered communities that followed, was shameful.

I was born in Annesley Woodhouse where the Sherwood tv drama was acted out. If you left school without qualifications it was a way of earning good money. Communities were destroyed and have never recovered. We are now surrounded by Amazon clearing warehouses and suchlike. I have lived in these communities all my life, so forgive me but don’t you live in central London.

    Such lethargy. Very disappointing.
But no one ever wins the World Cup by starting fabulously well and blowing all their group opposition away.
Sadly, Southgate's attitude towards Foden and Alexander Arnold suggests we will remain too negative, and won't win the tournament despite the attacking talent at the manager's disposal.
But I don't see us losing 4-0 to Wales, and qualifying is clearly the first objective. Almost accomplished.

The fact that Gavin Williamson is a sir and Kevin Sinfield is not tells you so much about this country and the values we hold. Kevin Sinfield is just something special - I hope there is recognition in this year's SPOTY for his efforts.

Horrific as that is, it's not the full story. Many people were victims of modern slavery, forced to work by withholding their passports. Thousands died.
This tournament is the modern day equivalent of building the pyramids. Shame on everyone involved.

Six and half thousand people died to build the stadia for this tournament that will be torn down once it's over - once some balls have been kicked across some grass. I couldn't care less about beer being served at matches or wearing rainbow armbands or not, but 6,500 people are dead. Many more were exploited and lived in misery.
England should have boycotted the tournament. All the pundits should have refused to go. None of the pundits cares about raising awareness as much as they care about lining their pockets and raising their profiles at the expense of vast numbers of dead people.
You would think the least the entirety of the football world could do would be to come together and mourn the lost, wear black armbands, remember them before every.single.match. But then they might draw attention to the beautiful game not being quite so lovely or so lucrative once people truly lifted the veneer.

Absolutely, He'll be getting 1st class everything, He can't criticize the hosts as it was FIFA who awarded it to them, He's stuck between politics and finance, His tirade the other day was somewhat mind blowing, He gave the worlds media, Social media, World organisations, Fans a pick axe handle to beat him with...all this when he said..."we need to concentrate on the football"
Since my adult hood I've battled those who would take advantage of those who are unable to fend for them selves, I'm not a media darling as they have their own agenda, But "the peoples game" was stolen years ago by the money men and those that have the power, It aint fun anymore for me, I'll watch our game this afternoon, But with little enthusiasm for England.

Our ire should be directed at the people who made the decision to award Qatar the World Cup. Like politics, the people who make all the decisions in this world are rarely challenged on them, they always manage to turn it into a debate amongst the lower orders while they sit back and rub their hands counting the money.

Oh I don't doubt that's the claim, Lineker covering himself and the corporation that pays him millions a year, including to go and stay in a 6 star Qatar Hotel for a month.
But it's drivel. It's very much Lineker and the BBC making a point and not letting the people watch the ceremony. Yes, those technically minded might have been able to stream it. I note Lineker doesn't feel strongly enough to make a stand and decide not to go and not to take the (vast amounts of money). For all of these people it's do as I say, as long as I make sure I'm all right jack.

If countries wanted to really make a worthwhile statement they would have got together and agreed a mass/partial withdrawal from the tournament. For maximum effect they could have announced it at the last moment.
Had, for example, England, Denmark, Australia and a few big hitters done so it would have devalued the tournament and made a proper stand as well as causing deserved chaos for FIFA and the bribing Qataris. Fancy armbands and all round tutting doesn't achieve a great deal.

But...the more bad news this tournament gets the better imo, Qatar should never have been awarded this, With all their negative human rights records, Women as 2nd class citizens, Gay relationships outlawed and a plethora of other issues to boot.
FIFA and UEFA  need to be shown for what they are...complicit in Qatar's abhorrent behaviour, I look forward to a pi$$ poor World Cup ?
