To be fair, we haven't seen Derby regularly play against League One standard opposition for many a year.

All true but until last year we had the DNA of a different Derby. Last season with the youngsters and now this season with the same youngsters mixed in with some seasoned old heads it’s a different thing altogether. This is the first time in 8 years or so that we have a completely new team as opposed to either the tweaked remains of an old group or a “needs must” from the academy.
There isn’t in my view a huge ability difference between champ and L1 just overall consistency and the lack of parachute clubs
Every game will be a sporting contest with teams having strengths and weaknesses. We certainly have the support advantage in most cases along with (I believe) a better than average skill level. Others have team ethic, determination to claim a scalp and skilled players of their own. Keep doing what we are doing and we will be there or thereabouts post Christmas but no one will be walking away with it. That’s why we have leagues based on merit.

Why do I think that if Rooney had overseen our start to the season, and performances/results had been replicated, that you would be gushing in the step change in our overall approach, and that we need to give him some slack as he is still bedding in new players, coping with injuries, not having a RB, blah, blah, blah.

We need a RB who's comfortable splitting his time during games filling in as a ball-playing CM & getting back in position at RB to defend.
It's a role requiring good positional sense, a decent level of footballing intelligence and a willingness to work hard for the team.

Well its not just about scoring goals.  We have the joint best defence along with Ipswich atm ?
Lets remember where we were a few weeks ago before David Clowes stepped in and saved us from oblivion.  A lot of pundits had Ipswich and Sheff Weds down as favourites for promotion this season, they have been in League One for a few seasons now and their starting point for rebuilding was far better than ours.
I agree its frustrating not to score and win games we dominate but other than scoring goals there is a lot to be pleased about watching us play.  You can see the team has progressed and is starting to gel nicely since the opening day, we just desperately need to start scoring. 
I'm still hoping a couple of signings will come and add some firepower - if they do, we still have a helluva chance of getting out of the division at the first attempt.  If not, and its mid-table this year, we've laid the groundwork for next season.

Created, attacking intent, decent opportunities created, decent openings, just not had that luck that we need to score.
I have no doubt it will come very soon.
 

I’m not sure what to say after that, the tactics and set up were good. We had a 20 minute spell in the 2nd half where we just kept going long which lost our momentum and then we went back to our normal game in the last 15 minutes and started creating chances. The players have to take responsibility for not getting it in the net today, I can’t see how you can criticise the manager or coaching staff.

We didn't really have a problem scoring under Cocu though, when he actually had a striker in the team (Martin & Waghorn both doing OK), not the second season obviously when our best option was a 40% fit Marriott playing lone striker or JHI (where is he now?)

Failing to put the ball into the net from clear chances isn't really as a result of players gelling or not though. In fact I'd say most of the gelling has already been accomplished.
