Also on Haaland, Manchester City have taken an almighty gamble. They've offloaded a number of their strikers and put all their hopes on a bloke whose injury track record is hardly promising. It's great if he stays fit, but if he gets injured they've not got Jesus or Sterling who were really good backups.

They also brought in Julian Alvarez who would be first choice at pretty much any other top flight club in Europe.

I went to Arsenal v Sevilla the week before the PL season and Jesus looks great with that Arsenal team (scored a hat-trick in the first half), but when they tried to play him out wide for periods of the second half he disappeared from the game and Martinelli doesn't quite click properly as the number 9 when they switch around at the moment.

Sterling was good at City, but they've unloaded players in positions that Pep feels they've got good cover in. Jesus replaced by Haaland and Alvarez. Sterling will not be missed if two/three of Foden, Grealish, Bernardo, KDB, Mahrez etc. link up well with whoever is playing up front. Zinchenko could be the biggest miss, Cancelo is one of the best full backs in the league, but after that it's Walker out of position or Ake (I think) to cover.

  2. Wildsmith

    Oduroh    Davies    Stearman    Forsyth

    Smith    Thompson

    Knight    Sibley    Dobbin

    Collins

Subs: Loach, Cashin, Roberts, Robinson, Bird, Hourihane, Aghatise, Mendez-Laing, Barkhuizen.

Give some of the squad a run out for fitness and get Smith and Knight in positions that they are more familiar with. Collins stays in to give him some chances of getting on the scoresheet and getting some confidence back in front of goal.

  3. I can’t believe we haven’t scored yet. I feel we’ll have quite a few games this season where we dominate like this, but we need to convert the chances.

Collins will score eventually but today might not be his day. Will be interesting to see what Dobbin can offer with this sort of service and if Sibley can come on and create havoc.

Not sure Charlton have it in them to change the possession stats or the way they play much. They’re grateful that we haven’t taken the lead yet.

How about these ... Carl Jenkinson, Oludare Olufunwa, Jonathan Dinzeyi, Pascal Estrada, Alfie Mawson?

Jenkinson - Plays in Australia. Just signed for Newcastle Jets

Olufunwa - Centre back mainly with less experience than Oduroh

    Dinyezi - Centre back again.

Estrada - centre back (again) also just signed for a Slovenian team

    Mawson - Another centre back…

Please, while you’re plucking names out of thin air, just do a bit of extra reading to see if they fit the right back position with experience and are available (not just moved somewhere else).

In replacing bryne how about Cyrus Christie, Renaldo Torraj, Lewis Gibson, Julian Jeanvier, Lars Dendoncker, Martin Kelly

It is slim pickings at the moment, but I hope the recruitment team can pull a rabbit from the hat somewhere.

I had a check in on the players you've listed.

Christie - Not again for me. Although might be the best of a bad bunch.

Torraj - Only 18, think we have our young RB sorted with Oduroh

Gibson - Left footed apparently, so wouldn't be suited to RB

Jeanvier - Another centre back, but he also signed for Auxerre last month

Dendoncker - Appears to only played 6 games while on loan at St. Johnstone last season and got sent back after only half of the loan period.

The point is, we aren't asking out fullbacks to do that.  Roberts basically played in central midfield alongside Bird on Saturday.  Knight was bit more of an orthodox fullback, getting forward and linking up with NML, but he still tucked in at times as well.  We need intelligent players who can pass, more than guys that will just run up and down the flanks all game.

This is true of the last game, but do we think that's because we are going with this tactic for the whole season, or is that because Roberts and Knight aren't suited to the marauding wingback style that is more prevalent these days?

  7. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least another 4-5 players in before the end of the window. A couple of them being loans and others will likely have to be free transfers/out of contract players - depending on what we can do within our business plan.

Keeper, right back, striker and wide forward at a minimum. Extra cover in forward areas would be nice to have over a long campaign where you will need to utilise plans B, C and D etc.

Desperately need some competition for Wildsmith and the free options out there are few and far between. Pacy forward options are needed to compliment and give options against what we currently have, these are more likely to be youngsters on loan. Right back is a tricky one, we could do with some experience there.

Where are the Villa players that Big Trav promised????

Think there was a RB from Villa mentioned a while back, not multiple signings. Last update from him was that Dobbin, Joseph and McDonald were closest to signing with Robertson being offered a contract.

    Dobbin one is confirmed now.

Joseph seems (or seemed close) waiting on more info from potential landlord @RAMS1992

McDonald one, I'm not too fussed about, but could be a steady squad player for us.

Robertson I'd like to see join as he looked good on his trial appearance for us and seems to be versatile with his position freeing up Knight to go back to his preferred position.

Exactly, we'll be able to use their own payment for Plange as evidence when pitching our case to the tribunal. The interest from the likes of Man Utd and others will also show that Ebiowei is a MORE sought after player than Plange was.

The thing is, they bought Plange when under contract and Ebiowei was out of contract.

We only had him for a year, so that amounts to about £40k value as an academy player moving clubs under the age of 24.

We offered him a new contract which will hopefully help our cause, but I’d be surprised if we got much more than £200k for him, which is still way too low.

Does anyone know if we can add a sell-on clause in this situation? Also, was a sell on ever mentioned with Plange?

Ha, yes, I didn't necessarily mean open it up to the likes of me with some colouring pens and a piece of paper. More taking some inspiration from what people who actually know what they're doing have done!

Such as a professional designer? I see we’ve gone round in a circle ?

Just playing with you. I get a bit defensive when people suggest designing stuff is easy. It’s taken me years to get to a position where I can lead a design team and every time we get a fresh junior or intern into the team they have a lot of ideas about how easy it’s going to be and soon realise it’s not the way. Same as with all careers really.

Let’s leave the work to the professionals. We can love it or hate it, but designing stuff for masses is a thankless task.
