I got more enjoyment from Rosenior’s nine games in charge with mixed results than the subsequent 10 months of Warneball combined.

True, anti-football relies on shape and consistency in defence, and being clinical with the few chances you may get to work.
Warneball is pure chaos, no control, no conservation of energy, just lots of running about either chasing the ball or getting the ball up and down the pitch as quickly as possible. You know, the kind of football I used to play in the park when I was 9.

You can’t sign 11 players with a combined 1000 matches at a higher level and complain about the expectation being too high. You can’t have the biggest wage bill in the league and complain about the expectation being too high. You can’t have almost three times the average number of fans coming through the door and complain about the expectation being too high.
The expectation is to win the league, because if we don’t then another team in a worse situation is doing something better than us to achieve it. There is a difference between needlessly slagging players, i.e. Bradley, and wanting the club to find solutions to improve.
Everyone is up for a critique: Clowes, Warne & Thomas. Clowes hired both Warne and Thomas, he is continuing their employment and letting them have influence over the future of this football club, his long-term investment and ultimately the general feeling and wellbeing of the people in the city of Derby. Clowes will never deserve criticism for being Derby owner, but we can critique and analyse how he could make it better. That is the difference. I don’t want anyone to lose their job or suffer abuse, although it happens, but we all have a right to say what we like and what we don’t - there is just ways to do things. ‘I don’t like 3-5-2, I wish we played XYZ’ is not that same as ‘Warne is a baldy, bobble-headed w*****’ - most people go with the former, the latter is just completely unnecessary.

When I saw Warne at Rotherham I thought fair enough, he has to play more ugly football due to his budget constraints and being a manager at a smaller stature club. I thought he hit a ceiling with them and did a good job. I was certain he would step it up with us. Bigger club, high expectations, intergrate his more pragmatic style with our tidy and technically solid football. A good fusion. In reality, his football is horrible to watch, his stubbornness and inability to evolve kick and lump it is starting to pee alot of supporters off.
I've hardly seen any games home or away under his tenure where I've thought we have completely dominated matches. Even when we had that steady run of clean sheets, the matches were really drab and tedious affairs. We never really controlled the play, but the majority of opposition were mid to lower table crap which meant our defence barely had much to do. He has relied on individual brilliance (Dizzy and now Waghorn) to constantly bail him out. I look at all the good sides I've watched over the years and I think yes, we've had quality players head and shoulders above the rest of the squad at times, more importantly the team always stood out as a brilliant unit. Watching Paul Warne set out his team, I'm hoping for a piece of magic for 5 minutes to get us the 3 points every week. That is nowhere good enough, especially as we are one of the big teams in this division.
His persistence to try and play wing backs is getting laughable. I'm depressingly admiring him for being so stubborn that he wants his precious 3 5 2 to work. It hasn't. Admit it. Every bleedin time he reverts to that system, we look even worse and our shape is a complete mess off the ball. I'll admit I have underestimated how many League One teams get the ball down and keep the ball well. We can't get near teams at times and it's a shambles. In my head we cannot get rid of him because he'll cost too much in compo and his long contract was given for a reason to stabilise the club. My DCFC heart says get rid of this chap, a manager completely out of his footballing depth. The media love him and bluntly, I do not care. Be a good football manager first then make me laugh 👍
Even though Rosenior had a horrid away record, at least I could see what he was trying to do. Possession football, dominating teams. We were battering some teams away from home, we just couldn't quite get it in the net. Over more time, averages say all them shots would have meant goals eventually. I could get behind the project as a supporter. I am reaching deep down to support Warneball. When I watch the team, we are all over the place with no clear plan other than an obsessive nature to cross the ball constantly with no build up play. Even if by some miracle we gain promotion, I'd have limited confidence in this manager to take us further. Where would we go in the Championship? Try and ping it 50 yards whilst all the teams pass rings around us.
I'd sack this muppet tomorrow but he has to stay because we've committed to him. We've made that decision so the club needs to stick. A real shame.

I don't blame DC for appointing Warne, people who seem to be pointing the finger of angry power at the owner need to take a hard look in the mirror. On paper, he has to be on of the best managers for League One. He was available and we've made a big football commitment to PW and his coaching team. Unless results went completely south, the chap is going nowhere. Unfortunately I think for this team, I'm struggling to see a long term progression under this manager.
Paul Warne plays football to get results, he claims he wants entertainment but from what I've witnessed and many Rotherham supporters commenting online, this reality is a fantasy. Your old fashioned pragmatic type of manager simply does not last long at a bigger football club nowadays. Look at the top 2 teams who went up last season. Both played super football and deservedly went to the Championship. Only in complete desperation (cough Leeds) will an owner turn to a pragmatic manager to keep them from being relegated. It's a short term goal, to keep the club afloat and prevent the results from becoming worse. It's definitely not for building success longer term in the modern game. And ultimately I think this is where we'll go wrong. Supporters don't want to see pragmatic football season after season, that's not the way football works anymore. Style of play does matter to me, maybe I'm in the minority but I want to see Derby County try and play something eye catching. After all the crap we've endured, I would love nothing more than some crisp passing and build up play and blow some teams out of the water.
Warne had the chance to evolve the playing style over the summer and after a few games, it's like watching the same team from 6 months ago. I really want him to shut me up, prove to me he can play exciting counter attacking football most weeks. But he hasn't. Granted, he's got plenty more opportunities and I've seen us start worse and still had a good season. I would love it if he came out firing and we played the sexy exciting football. Sadly in 6 months I've seen 2 good performances. One was the final game of last season and the other was last weekend.
He really needs rethink the situation or more people will unfortunately start to lose patience.

Thanks Tyler. I really would like the debate to be widened. It is one way traffic on here at the moment, in spite of the poll stats.
Can some of the 262 post why Warne has their support? @Brailsford Ram posted a week ago that he voted ‘not even close to questioning his future’ because there was no way David Clowes would sack him anyway. The question wasn’t where does Clowes stand with Paul Warne, it was where do YOU stand with Paul Warne. I would like to know what other fans are seeing that I am not - what has Warne done/is doing whilst at Derby that puts you in a position where you are happy to give him at least this season to not be reviewed on his performance.

One point before I start - I've never blown smoke up Warnes behind to say that he's a great coach, motivator etc - I just don't consider that he's nearly as bad as some of the folks on here state he is. Therein lies the difference.
Digression over, what do I see? I see a number of repetitive posts on here from a hard core of posters which then in rotation get liked by the same group like some form of Eurovision song contest voting parade.
I see totally identical threads start up making the same points with the introduction I know there is already a thread about this but.........
I see that the poll suggests that the majority of posters are in favour of giving Warne until at least Xmas but if you landed from the planet Zog you wouldn't believe that as the same protagonists as above are the most vocal on here.
    Apart from that who knows.

Well I enjoyed the day out at Bolton (well, a few miles away from Bolton), my first visit to that stadium. Good stadium, setup, home fans were very vocal. Seemed quiet in the away end. Lots of bars and restaurants in the area.
Positives from the game were that I thought we defended really well when under the cosh for long periods, and it took a fluke goal to beat us. Defenders were solid and Vickers made what looked like from the other end a couple of very good saves. I heard some criticism on the radio about players not putting a shift in - from my angle they all gave it 100%. Forsyth and Nelson had good games. Bradley did well other than his ricket. Thought Hourihane had a decent enough game. Fornah looked terrible first half out of position but much better when he was moved back. This is, of course, all in the context of the match and how were set up, if indeed we were set up in any particular way.
I was impressed with how Evatt set Bolton up, they played good football. They lacked a killer edge and looked a little ropey at the back on the odd occasion we tested them, which doesn't quite put them in the Plymouth/Ipswich bracket from last season, but they're a good side who will be up there.
Referee: As some of you know I ref at county league level so may (or may not) be able to offer some insight. He's got the first big decision of the game wrong - he's decided Elder is fouled but given where Derby are should have waited a couple of seconds and given the goal. He's blown far too early and luckily we scored the penalty.
I think that has clearly influenced the way he managed the Wildsmith incident as this time instead of blowing up as soon as he saw the handball he has  waited to see if the Bolton players scores into an empty net. As soon as he doesn't, he blows for the foul. Having indicated a foul, he has made up his mind and the red can come out there as it's deliberate handball stopping an obvious goalscoring opportunity (DOGSO). Given that it's such a big decision, he has a word with his assistant, and he'll be asking him whether he saw anything that would change his mind. If, as it turned out, the assistant couldn't say one way or the other, the ref sticks with his decision. It was actually good refereeing.
Their penalty. Only VAR could say whether it was in or out of the box. We don't have VAR and it looked to me and everyone around me that it was a penalty, so it's hard to criticise too much.
Derby penalty appeals in the second half: The "handball" when the player is falling over and the ball hits his hand is not handball. The rules clearly state that if a player is putting an arm out to stabilise himself and its not deliberate, then it's not handball. The potential penalty when NML tangles with their number 5 was 50/50 - it was both players fighting for the ball but the defender did have his arm at neck height on NML so maybe. But I felt the one on Bradley was an absolute stonewall. Defender not looking at the ball as it comes across and just hauls him to the ground. It was a far more blatant foul than the one we got the peno for. So poor refereeing.
Derby - tactically shambolic. No notable shape or patters of play. Players looked like they weren't sure who was meant to be where. I get why Warne put Bradley on ahead of Cash. I was frustrated second half as we were on the ropes and both Warne and Barker were sitting down and we had no-one standing and organising/encouraging etc. Putting JJ on at the end and not putting him through the middle up against their lumbering number 5, who was always the last man in a 3 and had already been booked, was criminal.
There is a clear pattern emerging this season against teams that play football and I'm afraid there was nothing in that game, against one of the promotion front runners, that convinced me Warne is up to the task. Equally, he is being hamstrung by injuries and yesterday we didn't get the rub of the green, although we certainly could have helped ourselves with some organisation, composure and some time spent in possession of the football. Warne isn't going to suddenly change his mantra, we can only hope though it is more effective when we have a fully fit squad, if that ever happens.
Sorry, that was a much longer post that I'd anticipated!

I agree that this squad needs time to build. Mac was fortunate those football relationships were built by the previous manager. The major difference is Warne had a clear choice and he wants to play the way he's always played and not evolve. He can choose to try and play easier on the eye football, something supporters can back and have sympathy if we don't particularly play well and/or get the results.
Over the summer I thought I'd see a pattern of plan and a style being formed by Warne. All I've seen so far is the same as last year and not in a good way.

  25. Clap
SSD got a reaction from May Contain Nuts in The Paul Warne Poll
