Derby's Arboretum Park Was the first public park in England

The Arboretum opened in 1840, following the donation of the land by philanthropist Joseph Strutt who wanted to reward the working people of Derby for the part they had played in helping him and his family amass their enormous fortune.

Strutt commissioned John Claudius Loudon to design the park. In 1859, the Arboretum was visited by Frederick Law Olmsted while on a research tour of Europe. It is thought he incorporated features of Loudon’s work into his design for Central Park, in New York.

Some facts about the Midland Hotel at the station.

The Midland Hotel is the oldest purpose built railway hotel in the world (still existing, there was one at Euston which is now demolished).

On 28 September 1849, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and the Royal Family stayed overnight in the hotel whilst travelling back from Balmoral Castle to Osborne House.

In the late 1970's, I had to assist a tired and emotional Tosh Lines from said Hotel to Platform 1 for his train to London......

The cathedral was built in the 14th century and the existing tower added in 1530s. However by 1650 the fabric of the church had deteriorated severely and was almost collapsing by 1700. The Corporation wouldn’t pay for a new church so the vicar Dr Hutchinson decided unilaterally to demolish the church to force the Corporation’s hand. He hired a gang of workmen to demolish it overnight in 1723. The Corporation was then forced to arrange the funds to build a new church in neo classical style in 1725 with original 1530s tower retained.

I believe it has the oldest set of complete church bells in the world.  Been there since Henry V111. The mechanism on the clock is unique as it contains a lot of metal from the Jacobite rebellion when Bonnie Prince Charlie was in town.  One bit of the actual tower is very new as it needed replacing as it was damaged by a barrage balloon in the war.
