Thought this was a good article that I think explains the problems that are much more deep-rooted (ahem) than the current captain.

Weve focused on the short form versions of the game, even at county level, and become so entertaining with it but we’ve sacrificed a lot when it comes to test matches which has probably shown in the last year.

But fair do’s to Australia too, they have a very good and deep bowling attack (like we did a few years back, but you have to manage it so you have players to replace those who probably need to look towards retiring, bowlers like Wood are continuing to play second fiddle) but also they have a couple of players who step up to get big scores with the bat around some experienced heads who can go and play their game. They aren’t an ‘all time’ great side but they are very efficient and well rounded.

Same problem we’ve had for years - too many county sides!

Should have eight regions playing each other. Make the pitches spinner friendly for the last day or so.
Too many county sides means too much mediocrity on which to build reputations. Making a quick hundred against five trundlers no one has heard of is not preparation to face test bowlers. Let’s get the very best players playing each other and set up a semi-professional league on which the rest can build their reputations.

Also, I cannot believe Jack Leach and Dom Bess are the best spinners in the country. I have nothing against these guys but they must be the weakest spin representatives in world cricket. Finding their replacements should be a priority

We never gamble in our selection. We go back time and again to players whose techniques have found them out.

We have also driven away players who would have been better, like Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.

We need a big shake-up but there are too many who will cry foul when they realise they might lose money and so nothing much will happen and we will fall further in the rankings.

The bowling hasn't really been the problem. It's not fear inducing or anything but it's competent test bowling for the most part, but when the batting has given nothing to work with........

Anderson, Broad, Robinson and Wood should have been our attack in every test, supported by Stokes and Root.

Pointless picking Leach - he’s not test standard.

But in picking our best bowling attack, we have a long tail and England’s selectors get scared. Our batsmen have been poor for years now and we are doing nothing to bring along the next generation.

We’ll keep picking players who bring the bat from gully to mid wicket and who don’t know where their off stump is and hoping they get thirty or so. No one has the patience to bat for hours, except Sibley who still only scores about twenty when he does!

A very small victory as the openers survive five overs at the end of the day, albeit with Crawley saved by a marginal no ball.

Australia have humiliated England this series and we will need to see how English cricket responds.

Not holding my breath.

It's looking like we're not even going to get the token 1 dead rubber win and the Aussies want a "5-0 ya stinking pommes" series and there's precious little England can do about it.

There'll no doubt be a root and branch (pun intended) review after the series which will amount to "we wish we had more money like the IPL because India have a good test side"

It'll be the 3rd 5-0 defeat in the last 5 tours of Australia (and one of the others was 4-0) so all this is the norm.
