The "new" one is the wrong size. It should go in ratios 1:4:9:16:25:...

Of course only having puny 3D perception, the apes in the movie could only see the first 3 of these (depth 1, width 4, height 9).

What's the 16 and 25 referring to?

The Monolith extends in all sorts of spatial dimensions that we can't perceive. So the 16 is at right angles to the length, width and depth, and the 25 is at right angles to that as well. And so on. 

When I first read that in the book, it was like the scales falling from my eyes.
