Derby may have to play Wilson (when fit), regardless of form

I know there are often whispers of this when loaning from big clubs, but it's interesting to see evidence. Darragh MacAnthony has been vocal about it and Liverpool are named as one of the clubs who heavily monitor their loans:

It'll be interesting to see what happens when Wilson returns to fitness if two of Jozefzoon, Bennett, Waghorn or Lawrence have seemingly made themselves undroppable.

If so, it would amount to the manager having team selection dictated by non footballing reasons. Totally unacceptable. Just my opinion.

I think Frank will make decisions based on whats best for Derby. His reputation will depend on his first job and I have seen nothing yet which suggests he will be swayed by anything but common sense.

Stuff like this may have mattered in the past but we appear to be in better condition with Mel and Frank without Sam Rush's influence.

Posted this in another thread earlier this season may explain a little

Think this from the Liverpool echo explains it

it a follow up move to take the 20-year-old on loan has foundered because Wigan cannot guarantee that the player will play in at least three-quarters of their matches during his loan spell.

The Echo understands that the Reds now insist on a “75 per cent” clause for all of their loaned players, whereby clubs are penalised financially if a player they have loaned does not play in a specified ratio ofmatches.

The clause is designed to ensure that all playersunable to get first team football at Anfield will benefit by gaining valuable first team experience elsewhere.

Football League rules prevent clubs from demanding that loaned players start matches, so the Reds have shrewdly introduced financial penalties into their loan agreements punishing clubs who fail to meet their specified appearance criteria.

The Reds do not ask for loan fees either, with the savings on players’ wages during the loan spells considered a negligible factor in the Anfield club’s thinking.

Why don't the efl introduce a rule that only a proportion (say, 25%) of the total loan cost )fee + wages + extras) to the club loaning the player can be related to appearances. SO there's still room to offer discounts/sweetners if they play a lot of games but's not overwhelmingly influential on the loaning club.

What, are top clubs then just going to huffily say they're going to rot all the young players in u23 sides because they don't have everything their own way?

It's not just the prospect of team selection being dictated by non footballing reasons, it's another example of all the power in the game being disproportionately concentrated at the top.

personally, I don't think it warrants a rule.  If you have the financial clout (top or bottom) to cope with the contract then do it, if not don't.  It is a commercial deal.  The top clubs do have all the power and obviously a change to this rule won't change that.  I think you might have to be careful what you wish for because in the league we are seen as one of the teams with financial resources and that should be to our advantage

Interesting idea.....

But presumably as things stand clubs are happy to take players on the terms being offered.

Eg..previously  you would pay £1mill 'loan fee'.

OR.. ..now pay nothing and  you get a player better than what you have for nothing. If some weeks they arent better then presumably that means your own players have risen to the challenge and you are  winning games, so who cares about paying the £20k penalty.   If you are losing games AND they still arent getting games you send them back and end the loan.

The loaning club get the wages off the books maybe and get the player showcased...leading to a move at the end...or get to bring them back with more experience and put them in the team.

The player gets the best chance of playing.

Seems a massive win win all round to me.
