WhiteHorseRam
Del Amitri is a really big one on the underrated front. Some others of mine - Killing Joke, King (80s Coventry band), Ultravox, Thunder

ColonelBlimp
Depeche Mode of course. Oh, @WhiteHorseRam, I saw Ultravox at the Southampton Gaumont in 1981 was it? Always preferred the John Foxx variant myself. I'll give you Stiff Little Fingers.

For example, they're worshipped in Germany and have spawned a load of other bands there who are very obviously inspired by DM of the late 80's/early 90s. There are several I can suggest you try out if you're interested.
Wolfie
Goldfrapp Some really good stuff by them but I think they shot themselves in the foot by making the style of each album very different from the previous one & potentially having to recruit a new set of fans every time. I love the scene in Hi Fidelity where John Cusack plays a Beta Band track in his record shop and people started buying it. Great film for music lovers.
