Stoke target Rowett - and Carson

Derby are braced for an official approach for Gary Rowett from Stoke - and fear he could take keeper Scott Carson too.

The Potters want Rowett to be their new boss after axing Paul Lambert following relegation from the Premier League.Championship County are prepared to let Rowett go assuming his hefty compensation clause, worth over £2.2million, is met.

Rowett, 44, is attracted by the Britannia Stadium vacancy where Stoke will be armed with parachute payments worth £40m.Further income for recruitment could be generated by player sales with England keeper Jack Butland and star midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri likely to be sold.

It will leave the Potters after a new shot-stopper and Rowett is a huge fan of Carson, 32, who excelled this term as Derby finished sixth.

I’m going to play devils advocate here. Before I start, I must make it clear that I am absolutely of the belief that Scott Carson is one of our best goalkeepers in years, and his shot stopping is second to none.

However, I think there is a point to be made that has distribution has been problematic to us this season. Obviously the tactical approach contributes, but Carson has given the ball away 50% of the time he’s had it statistically this season. That’s a lot, given we all know part of our downfall this season has been giving away possession. So perhaps there an arguement to be made that having a goalkeeper who can distribute better will benefit the team as a whole? This is obviously assuming we find one good enough to replace him.

Like I say all devils advocate, rather not lose him and have the problem, but I don’t think it’ll nessercerily destroy us.

Maybe it's given away so much because for most of the season he has been instructed to punt it up to the likes of Nugent who for all his hard work is rarely going to win headers against defenders who are bigger than him 8 out of 10 times?

I am not saying his distribution is perfect, just that the stats only tell half the story. I think he is told where to kick it as opposed to him not being very good at deciding where to kick it.

I did say the tactical approach contributes, but sometimes he just seems to aimlessly kick it nowhere near anyone/ out of play. Not that it’s that much of an issue when he’s such a good commanding shot stopper, but perhaps it might make a difference if we can distribute out the back better. Only trying to lessen the blow...

Every player has a price

Agreed but what price would you say Carson is worth. £10 - 15 mill ??

If so that would be very tempting as long as it was reinvested in new players.

If Warburton comes in, I reckon he’ll go in for Rangers’ Wes Foderingham now that they’ve signed Allan McGregor.

It kind of makes sense.

If he can bring Tavernier with him, count me in. He's an unbelievably good wing back going forward, and not too bad defensively either

Tavernier, Windass and Morelos look decent players for that league.

I mentioned both Tavernier and Windass in the suggestions thread as players I'd love to see us try and sign. Morelos is off to Turkey though isn't he?

Yeah I think I read there was a Turkish club wanting to sign him, on loan originally.

The Scottish Premiership is really poor but that doesn’t mean there aren’t decent players up there on the cheap.

Glen Kamara is an absolute must. A mobile, energetic and robust holding midfielder. He’s available for about 2mill. Absolute bargain.

He’s like a lesser version of Wanyama but with loads of potential.

Step up Dean Henderson, free transfer from Man Utd.

If Carson was to go (and I really hope he doesn’t) then this would be who I would want.  He’s had a fantastic season at Shrewsbury and has made it clear he wants to drop down to the championship so he can play and not just pick up a pay cheque.

Plus, gk is the one position where I genuinely can’t look around the league and see anyone who I would honestly prefer in goal
