Got to be a 442 diamond, all our wide players are awful (yes I'm including sterling) and we've got such a stron midfield

                   hart

walker smalling Cahill rose

                    Dier

             drinkwater alli

                   lallana

              vardy Kane

although you you could easily swap Lallana for Barkley and Clyne for walker, all attacking fullbacks who would give the width, vardy, Kane, Alli and smalling are no brainers but you know he's gonna slip Milner and Rooney in there.

Hart

Clyne - Stones - Smalling - Rose

Dier - Drinkwater

Wilshire - Alli

Kane - Vardy

That CB pairing will be the the pairing for the next 10 years I think. Just so long as Rooney doesn't start we'll be fine, he slows everything down. Pretty sure Welbeck will be in there and I can't blame Hodgson for taking him, he always plays well for England. Perhaps Carroll will make it onto the plane instead of Rooney? We can only hope.

Thought we looked good in the 4 3 3 shape against Germany.  With alli bombing forward too support kane who has to start ! Welbeck , probably a bit controversial but does the business for England.  Sterling for his dynamism and pace , henderson for his box to box abilities . The back 5 and Dier have been the best in there respective positions all season . Could be a case for rose . Cahill though not good enough , been caught out way too many times this season .

Way too many calls for Stones. I don't think I'd even have him in the squad. Jagielka has dislodged him at club level and I'd rather take Shawcross despite his one-time humbling by Zlatan. Stones still looks like a great prospect and ultimately I think him and Joe Gomez will be battling for the spot alongside Smalling in the coming years.

My side would be (playing in a 4-4-2 "diamond"):

Hart

Walker Smalling Cahill Rose

Dier

Alli Drinkwater

Rooney

Kane Vardy

Rooney because we all know he'll start and I think that's the best way to get him in the side whilst still being able to play Kane and Vardy, our two (on this season's form) "world class" players.

Goalkeepers: Forster, Foster
Defenders: Clyne, Shawcross, Jagielka, Cresswell (v tough call over Bertrand)
Midfielders: Milner, Barkley, Lallana, Carrick, Sterling
Forwards: Welbeck, Carroll

Hardest thing was leaving out Sturridge but realistically, we have a lot of competent options at forward who would get in the side ahead of him. As effectively the fifth-choice striker (after Kane, Vardy, Rooney and Welbeck), he wouldn't get much game time anyway. Carroll, at least, offers a different kind of threat, not a bad option to throw on if you have to resort to going route one.

I actually think we're in quite a good position for 2018, we just need a couple more quality players to develop. Hart/Smalling/Dier/Alli/Kane has the makings of a backbone of a good side, we just need one of Stones and Gomez to kick on and form a dominant defensive partnership with Smalling, Sterling to get back to his best and Shaw to bounce back from injury. As well as that everybody seems to talk highly of Patrick Roberts and a couple of others.

Not the best team but due to various injuries its probably the best i can make up.

Thought Henderson was out for the Season? Anyway here's what i'd have. I don't expect Roy will agree.

4-2-3-1

Hart

Walker Smalling Cahill Rose

Dier Drinkwater

Lallana Alli Welbeck

Kane

OR

4-1-2-1-2

Hart

Walker Smalling Cahill Rose

Dier

Barkley Drinkwater

Alli

Kane Vardy

Stones has been shocking for most of the last 6 months and we could do with some experience in that back line, so Cahill gets the nod. Played alongside Smalling more often I think as well. Stones is the future though so should be on the plane.

Regarding the 4-2-3-1:  Alongside Dier we lack a complete midfielder but I've given Drinkwater the nod based on Wilshere being too injured and Milner being too boring.

Lallana was my only other question mark but I think he does give us a bit more from a control point of view, despite offering less attacking threat. Wouldn't be sad to see Sterling or Walcott in place of him though and do feel that's our main weak position.

If it's goals we're after then the diamond should provide it but think that midfield could be too open against a good side. I'd probably risk it and go for that in the opener.

Full squad:

Hart Forster Foster

Walker Smalling Cahill Rose Stones Clyne Baines

Dier Drinkwater Alli Wilshere Barkley Milner

Lallana Welbeck Sterling Walcott

Kane Vardy Rooney

We all know Roy will start Rooney and Milner though.

Would anyone want roy to give JT a call? Our centre backs are some of the worst we've had in years, a position we have usually been strong in. I know weve stuck with youth all the way through the qualifiers and we still should attacking wise but im still if the opinion john terry is one if the best centre backs we have

Everton should have snapped chelseas hand off for stones recently he's been terrible
