Barker Given Permission To Feature For Sheffield United In Trial Games

Derby County’s Shaun Barker has been given permission to play a maximum of two trial matches for League 1 side Sheffield United.

Barker, 32, has been given the green light to feature for the Blades’ Under 21 side during this month, as an overage player, to continue his return to fitness after suffering a serious knee injury in March 2012.

After returning to training earlier this year, Barker played 45 minutes for Derby’s Under 21 side last month against Doncaster Rovers.

Derby are set to utilise the ability to field three overage outfield players in the coming weeks for players either on the fringes of the first-team squad or returning from injury, so the opportunity for Barker would be limited with the Rams.

In the event that the games go well at Sheffield United, he is likely to have the opportunity to feature in trial matches at other clubs in the coming months to progress his rehabilitation.

He's only playing 2 games for the U21s to be fair, I think to some extent it's just Clough doing him a favour and helping his recovery along. Probably too soon to talk about earning a contract there or anything like that. Just getting his fitness up more than anything at this stage.

These trial games are nothing more than an opportunity for Barker to go out, get some fitness behind him and put himself in the shop window for the summer. I'd be very surprised if he was ever seriously expected to return to the first team. As a club we've moved on, he's been out far too long to return as the same player we once knew.

Last game of the season, if we're already up or secured a play off place we will probably see a 10 minute cameo at the end.

I am glad he's able to play again, however id be very disappointed if we didn't get any money for him if he moves on after paying his wages and for his treatment all this time.

once your one of Cloughie's boys, you're one of Cloughie's boys. Something Nigel clearly inherited from his father and in many ways an admirable quality in a human, loyalty. Not sure it's conducive to producing the right blend and balance for success in the modern game, but not withstanding that, fair play to Nigel.
