When Cloughie was around, our highest earners was reported around the 5-8k level, that's why Green and Commons jumped when teams with bigger budgets came along to offer 10-15k. Barker would have never been on 18k or even 16k. 5k a week still gets him 250k a year pre tax. Been with us what 6 years or so, there's £1.5m or even taking 2/3's away in tax £500k. Basically he's on enough to afford a new house at 250k.

Every Barker thread this comes up. No Barker was not insured. No, DCFC do not insure (almost all) their players. Source? Pretty sure this is public domain information, but if not I've discussed it with the club hierarchy.

So, by trying to get fit, it's categorically the case that Barker hasn't cost the club an insurance payout. As RLACML implied, in the modern game it's prohibitively expensive to insure your players as a general policy. We may have money on Hughes as our main asset.

Snippet from a Blades u21 review:

Shaun Barker

Modern football does my head in. It’s all wheeler dealering ain’t it. Backscratching & Backstabbing in equal measures. Who knows? Is Barker here because we have a view we might want to & be able to sign him. Or are we just doing him/his club a favour which we’ll call in in the future, or are we already paying one back?  Anyway, Red n White striped shirt today.

Looked better than last week. Fully switched on. At his level, with his experience, much of his effectiveness is down to positioning. And he’d got all that going on. Rarely caught out. Rarely needed to get ****into gear. Comfortable. He won a lot of headers & some key tackles. Busy, organised & committed. He looked the class act out there. He grafted & lasted 65 minutes.

By a distance, he was the best Wrestler out there at corners.
